You're gonna love this. First Carl points out that the image on the screen at the rear of the stage is the new album cover (it's a drawing of a guy looking like he's ready for some bare knuckled boxing--someone in the crowd asked if it was Freddie Mercury), then he points out that they wouldn't be playing anything from it today. The set was really good, one of the better shows of the weekend, and better than I expected (I've never seen them without Neko Case before). The other highlights of the days I went (skipped Sunday): the Arcade Fire (best set of the weekend), Roky Erickson, the Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, the Jesus and Mary Chain (w/Scarlett Johansson), the Decemberists, and Of Montreal. I'd seen better sets before from Sparklehorse and the Black Keys. The Fratellis, Silversun Pickups, Amy Winehouse, Jarvis Cocker, Gillian Welch (w/David Rawlings), Fountains of Wayne, Nickel Creek, and the Good the Bad & the Queen were worth a look, and I'd probably be willing to see any of them again. Saw many other bands ranging from good (Interpol) to pretty much total suck (Hot Chip, Rufus Wainwright). Another great festival despite not being thrilled with the headliners (Bjork--okay, Red Hot Chili Peppers--skipped, Rage Against the Machine--skipped the whole day). A really enjoyable weekend for listening to loads of music, visiting with friends and enjoying some Chimays back at the hotel. As kind of a bonus, on the drive home, at a rest area back in Arizona, I found a rattlesnake. It might sound like a bad thing to most people, but I pretty much like all wildlife (except centipedes); and even after numerous hikes through the desert, I'd never come across a rattlesnake. I've come across many non-poisonous snakes, tarantulas, coyotes, desert foxes, road runners, burrowing owls, horned toads, kangaroo rats, scorpions, chuckwallas, pronghorn antelope, a bobcat, a grey wolf, a ringtail, and even a coatimundi, but I've managed not to ever come across a live rattlesnake during any hikes. Kind of a weird personal "accomplishment", but I guess I'm easily entertained. Later, Marc btw-- re:>where's your review of the new pornos? You'd probably get into this Eddie, but occasionally in my line of work, I've been paid to take my clients to adult book stores or assist in selecting hardcore videos. Also, back in college, I worked in a video store (Barry's Video, in Pikesville, MD), with a decent-sized porn section. When things got slow we'd play chicken, putting some tremendously graphic/rude video over the house system, and see who would be the first to switch it out before a customer or someone walking down the street in front of the shop noticed it. There were several elderly people who rented these movies also. I had an old guy come in one day complaining that his porno didn't have any girls in it--he had rented "Switch Hitters". I told him that I'd give him credit and he could select another movie for free. He comes back a while later with one called Bi Bi Love. I said, "Try again. Look for something with some girls on the cover." Just trying to help. Marc "amateur porn critic" H. btw2--I thought my descriptions of wildlife and porn were a bit excessive until I noticed this at the bottom of the digest: >"This guy's the champion," said Patricia Brennan, a behavioral ecologist, >leaning over the nether regions of a duck (a Meller's duck from Madagascar, >to be specific) and carefully coaxing out his phallus...
