I think you'd like it. well, *that's* on its way to me. i hope i have the time and inclination to do some summer reading. those sorts of incredible arithmetic skills are fascinating. there are people that can e.g. name the day of the week for any given date. it always struck me as a hardware problem - it doesn't seem like these are skills one can develop. or those people who can rattle off (much of) pi - it seems like they were born with an extra chip. i worked with someone who could add numbers very quickly. i would list off two and three digit numbers in sort of a regular speaking pace, and he would give me the sum. it was nowhere near savant-level, but regardless it never ceases to impress me. i am terrible at arithmetic - it's probably one of the reasons i studied math. btw, a personal pet peeve of mine is when people think i am good at computing tax or tips or sums because "you're good at math." another one is people thinking i can fix their pc. i think one of the biggest laughs i ever got from the father is when someone over their house was asking me about their pc, and i said i didn't know anything about it. my father said "what the hell was all that college i paid for?" and i said, "well not to fix computers - that's trade school stuff." > (yes, a case of TINYB, I know ...) what's the "B" stand for? xo - -- - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "People with opinions just go around bothering one another." - The Buddha ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2007 14:05:08 -0400 From: "Bachman, Michael" Subject: RE: movie talk - -----Original Message----- From: owner-fegmaniax@smoe.org [mailto:owner-fegmaniax@smoe.org] On Behalf Of 2fs Sent: Monday, April 30, 2007 1:15 PM To: You F*ckers Subject: Re: movie talk On 4/30/07, Bachman, Michael wrote: >> >> I just watched two of the three films by director Nicole Holofcenter >> over the weekend. The promo video was made by the Central Office of Information (COI) primarily for North American, Canadian and Australian television and is made up of small shorts including talking computors and see-through teapots. "Jughead Blues" was the final video that Syd Barrett was included in before he was replaced by Roger Waters. The new series will also feature a multitude of rare and never-seen-before film footage, including the first known broadcast of an alternate promo for the Floyd single "Arnold Layne" as well as home-made film footage of the band in 1967. Previously unknown to Pink Floyd collectors, there is also a clip of the first film in colour of the band with David Gilmour. The Floyd material will be part of episode two, a special on art rock - entitled "Between Rock And An Art Place." Other rarities that "The Seven Ages Of Rock" have unearthed include a first broadcast of the Velvet Underground performing at the Annual Dinner of the New York Society for Clinical Psychiatry on January 13, 1966. There will also be swathes of never-seen-before clips of David Bowie, including his show at the Rainbow Theatre on August 19 1972 and a perfomance of "Space Oddity" at the Ivor Novello Awards in May 1970. Both are being broadcast for the first time. Isn't "Chick Flick" used more for a more specific type of female-empowerment weepy than merely date movies though; more "Boys on the Side" or "Thelma and Louise" than "Pretty Woman"? I'm not that fond of the phrase, but it's existance has led to one of my favorite film sub-sub-sub-sub-genre names: the so-called "Male Chick Flick," for weepy movies aimed at men a la "Brian's Song," "Field of Dreams," et cetera. > Those are far less > condescending and would be fine by me to call them that from now > on.
