A big joint show. Musta been for "Into The Great Wide Open" or the album before that, "Full Moon Fever"...? 89, 90..? Anyway, Tom and band were okay that night but it was the dumbassed stagery that annoyed me. For the big guitar feedback/m irror ball freak-out during "Don't Come Around Here No More" a big stupid blow up tree blew up ...something like fifteen/twenty feet high ...or was that tree rigid? Can't recall fully now ...because ...from the top of said tree there was a door hence my thinking the thing was rigid and not a big blow up balloon piece of junk. Anyway. From the door atop the tree three guys dressed in buiz suits and donning masks erm, emerge and descend a spiral staircase-y thing to the stage. Okay. It was rigid but part of it, I'm thinking the branches now ... blew up. So. One guy had a Nixon mask on, one guy, I think an Agnew ...other one, it doesn't matter really, I just forget what/whom the other guy was wearing. They ran around a bit and then split out stage right, stage left, wherever. That was just D.U.M.B! I do however remember sitting there thinking half the joint probably don't even know who those masks were/stood for/what it was all about, et/al. Why those particular Presidents were chosen is beyond me to this day. Hell, I was baffled. It was just dopey and confusing. Musta' meant something to Tom and company. Ah well. Saw UK (Alan Holdsworth/Bill Bruford four piece issue. UK were the middle band, Carillo opened ...ACK!) open for TP and the HBs at the Paramount in Asbury way back in '77. Petty and crew were excellent back then, saw them a lot in the early days. Saw that Fab Poos/Petty package at The Palladium too. fabulous Poodles did nothing for me. Saw The Replacements open for 'em at Jones Beach back in 1989 too. Replacements were becoming a true *band* at that point ...not just a "let's go see how fucked up they are tonight!" trainwreck. I saw some real lucid Bob shows ...some nekkid ones too. When Slim joined I personally thought they got REAL good livewise. God bless Bob though ...Bob was rock 'n' roll! m ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2007 18:14:57 -0400 From: "Stewart C. By this time they had changed lead singers and had Ian Gillan on vocals, he was much better, although still a bit of a prat - - he split his skin tight velvet trews and was rather embarrassed as he was in danger of flashing the old wedding tackle to all and sundry .The band were much improved ( for a start they had ditched the satin shirts - which were very early 60s and naff) and they were playing more of their own material . Lord and Paice were great, in fact Paice was the most impressive of the band members - he's a great drummer , I was never a big Blackmore fan , although he can play really well, but just a bit too flash for me . Theres a playboy after dark video I have ( a mixed bag , bb king, dead, canned heat, steppenwolf etc ) with DP on it from either 68 or early 69 and they aren't bad on that ,but they were never one of my fave bands of the era, cock rock was not really my style, preferred stuff like beefheart . family, floyd, fairport, isb and the west coast bands like the airplane and the Dead . The roundhouse was a good gig though and it was strange seeing the old place again all gussied up and flash for the Electric proms last year - someone sent me a dvd of the Whos performance ( which was ACE) and I would not have recognised the old place - it really used to be a dump ( a nice dump ) but a dump nevertheless .. der kommander ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2007 11:51:12 +1200 From: grutness@slingshot.co.nz Subject: Re: driv'n' 'n' cry'n' >Drivin' n' Cryin' > >they probably spend a lot of time correcting people on the syntax. >unless they're a country band in which case they should be spending >all their time drivin' n' cryin'. not a bad group, and no, not country per se. Not to mention that Petty stole the "rebel without a clue" line from Paul during the tour and used it on his next hit record (and, when called on it, said something like, "yeah, like that's the first time anyone's ever said that" / "you can't trademark a line")... I used to rave about Tony de Meur and Bobby Valentino, specially the way that they opened the show with 'Thanks very much, see you soon - goodbye' then walked off the stage. I know that Bobby Valentino went on to a successful career with Hank Wangford, the Bluebells etc but what ever happened to Tony de Meur? - - Mike Godwin PS Went to see Johnny Winter last night - catch him while you still can! Slow starting but brilliant performance. He looked totally blind, frail and shaky, but he can still play the guitar. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2007 10:37:25 +0000 From: michaeljbachman@comcast.net Subject: Re: deep purple in 1969 at the Roundhouse - -------------- Original message -------------- From: great white shark > young master bachman spake thus > too bad you didn't see DP the following year, as they really > blossomed on their 3rd album with songs like "Chasing Shadows", "Why > Didn't Rosemary?", "The Bird has Flown" "The Painter, and "Fault Line". der kommander: > ah, but I DID , saw them on Nov 30th 1969 at the UK Roundhouse, > London"Polytechnic Arts Festival" w/Manfred Mann Chapter III, Deep > Purple, Brian Auger trinity, Atomic Rooster, Liverpool Scene, Free, > Village. Very nice, but I swould have liked to see them play the 3rd album songs live with Rod Evans and Nicky Simper. DP Mk1 were only touring behind the 3rd album for two months only in the US in the Spring of 1969. Rod and Nicky got sacked in June of 1969. Just my opinion here, but I perfer Rod's voice over Ian Gillian. Rod joined Captain Beyond shortly after being sacked, and they released the magnificent Captain Beyond eponymus debut in 1972 with the great Bobby Caldwell on drums, Rhino on guitar and Lee Dorman on bass from Iron Butterfly and the aforementioned Mr. Evans on vocals.
