It is one of their picks of the day. Rob MUSIC: Originals On: BBC 4 (9) Date: Friday 27th April 2007 (starting in 5 days) Time: 21:00 to 22:00 (1 hour long) Robyn Hitchcock. Documentary about cult rocker Robyn Hitchcock as he records a group of new songs in his London house, with help from famous musician friends including REM guitarist Peter Buck, songwriter Nick Lowe and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. The film eavesdrops on Hitchcock at work as he adds to his stockpile of dark, witty and surreal rock songs, and explores what makes Hitchcock's songs so memorable. It culminates with the band taking the songs on the road in America. I can't remember which came first - it was either Aerosmith, or Pink Floyd (I think it must have been the _Animals_ tour, or just before). About that Aerosmith show: I believe I was in the eighth grade, and it was one of my first times drinking and smoking cigarettes. Never liked that last - - but the drinking, quite amusing, in that my friend Dave who went with me smuggled in some brandy (see my location: we loves us some brandy in Milwaukee) in one of those bear-shaped honey containers. It never occurred to me to wonder about the usefulness of this stratagem, I mean if one of the bouncers had discovered it, was Dave going to say, no sir, there's no alcohol, I just needed to bring honey to the show. I'm sort of a honey addict, gotta keep it coming. I like to say "I'm on the bear," you know? cuz it sounds cooler that way... Those shows followed by yr typical late-'70s teen guy thing: Jethro Tull, ELP, Yes, etc. I had a ratty old Tull t-shirt from the _Songs from the Wood_ tour (cover reproduced thereon, I think) that I had forever. Well, the most comprehensible answer for me is that REM show in '89. But I was at my dads' bands' shows from probably the year I was born on out. So that encompasses 18 years of small-time local folk and country concerts. There were occasionally acts that were semi-nationally-known at the time, so maybe those count. The only ones I'm sure I saw were the Kendalls and TG Shepherd. ...yeah, thought so... ...so yeah, REM. And the Indigo Girls. You still have to reason out what it is you want the database software to do for you; it's just that the code you write simply describes what you want the result to contain, where procedural languages require you to explain step-by-step how the result is to determined. Really, finished SQL queries look a lot like the pseudocode that gets you started in many other languages--but in SQL, when you reach that point, you're done. :*) How about a little Robyn content? Audio quality is generally quite good. >>My apologies for the wait, but I think it's worth it. Disc 1 included a promo video which I've replaced with the first TV spot from Disc 2. Disc 2 included promos and pay TV content as well as content from commercial DVDs; since only a single song was left, I've re-named it Disc.2 - at only 206 MB, you may want to compress the audio on one or two tracks and squeeze this onto Disc 1. I have no information regarding lineage beyond 2 DVDs -> 1.2 (or less) DVDs with allowable content. While I agree that some of the source material quality is rather poor, anyone who doesn't enjoy this very much is clearly not a Robyn Hitchcock fan.<< Contents: Disc 1 The Soft Boys -- 1980-09-14 -- Leeds Futurama Festival Chapter 1: "Only The Stones Remain" Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians -- 1985 -- *Old Grey Whistle Test* Chapter 1: "The Man With The Lightbulb Head" Chapter 2: "Uncorrected Personality Traits" Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians -- 1985-04-16 -- *Old Grey Whistle Test* Chapter 1: "Heaven" Chapter 2: [Interview] Chapter 3: "Brenda's Iron Sledge" Robyn Hitchcock -- 1989-05 -- MTV Chapter 1: "Raymond Chandler Evening" Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians -- 1988-04-03 -- MTV, *120 Minutes* Chapter 1: [Interview] Chapter 2: "Uncorrected Personality Traits" Chapter 3: [Interview] Chapter 4: "Vibrating" Chapter 5: [Interview] Robyn Hitchcock -- 1990 -- MTV, *The Week In Rock* Chapter 1: *Eye* Featurette Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians -- 1992-02 -- *Much Music* Chapter 1: "Birds In Perspex" Chapter 2: [Interview] Chapter 3: "Oceanside" Chapter 4: [Interview] Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians -- 1992-03-02 -- *The Dennis Miller Show* Chapter 1: "Ultra-Unbelievable Love" Chapter 2: "Oceanside" Robyn Hitchcock -- 1995-04-03 -- *Late-Night with Conan O'Brien* Chapter 1: "I Something You" Chapter 2: [Interview] Robyn Hitchcock -- 1996 -- The Spud Goodman Show Chapter 1: [Interview] Chapter 2: "The Devil's Radio" Disc 2 Robyn Hitchcock -- 2004-11-14 -- WFMU, *Irene's Show* Chapter 1: "Full-Moon In My Soul" - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #175 ********************************
