Some of you fortunate UK folks may have had it beamed straight into your television. Other than a brief bit on Nico (with the 1980s dark-haired Nico singing a bit of "Chelsea Girls"), the documentary didn't really touch on the history of the hotel from a rock and roll standpoint. The comment was more prophetic than he realized, as the typical Hitchcockian carnival of stream-of-consciousness surreality was brought down to earth by his dissatisfaction with the sound mix. Beyond a booming that showed up whenever he sang at the lower end of his range, the problems were barely noticeable to the sold-out audience. Still, frustration made the former Soft Boy, one of the last of the old guard of professional nutters still freaking the normals, seem somewhat subdued. He caught fire in fits and starts instead of building incrementally. Hitchcock opened with the solo acoustic "Ghost Ship," with the singer slowly rising and falling, rather than swaying, with the insistent 6/8 pulse. The Venus 3 joined him one at a time over the next three songs -- Young Fresh Fellows/Minus Five mastermind Scott McCaughey served as the genial foil on bass and backing vocals while R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, less than three weeks after his Rock Hall of Fame induction, mostly hung out in the shadows. Countryish numbers like "Oli! Tarantula" and "In the Afterlife" were as sloppily relaxed as a pickup rehearsal, but the band sharpened as the songs got increasingly electric. "Sally Was a Legend," "Madonna of the Wasps," and "(A Man's Gotta Know His Limitations) Briggs" galvanized the guitar jangle that Hitchcock and Buck helped establish as a key ingredient in 1980s college rock. It reached its apex in a cover of "Ballad of a Thin Man," where the sinister, piercing treble of psychedelia served Bob Dylan's descending chords well, as drummer Bill Rieflin added a level of explosively nervous mania behind the kit and the song took on a hypnotic heft by the end. A crashing version of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" soon followed, and by then the difficulties of the mix, and of reality, were forgotten. Opener Johanna Kunin faced sound problems of her own, with her clear, light voice painting songs so delicate and fundamentally quiet that they were color ed by the bass rumble of the Middle East downstairs cutting through the floor. ) Copyright 2007 Globe Newspaper Company. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2007 11:20:47 -0400 From: "Bachman, Michael" Subject: RE: California (All the Way) was Re: Spaceland - -----Original Message----- From: owner-fegmaniax@smoe.org [mailto:owner-fegmaniax@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Carrie Galbraith Sent: Saturday, March 31, 2007 2:41 PM To: singing policemen Subject: RE: California (All the Way) was Re: Spaceland - -----Original Message----- >>From: Jeff Dwarf >I almost pointed out that California was bigger than any European >>country save Russia, but didn't have time to double check so I didn't. >>Good thing, since Ukraine, Spain, France, and Sweden are all bigger >>too. The adorable infant is so unbelievably cute that many people who saw that footage still haven't recovered their full composure. He was seen playing with a life-size cuddly toy of a brown bear, listening to Elvis Presley songs, and walking unsteadily towards the camera with mournful little eyes - because animal rights activists are apparently calling for him to be put to death. The argument, supposedly, is that since Knut is a zoo-born bear, and has been rejected by his mother (how COULD SHE!?!?!), he will never grow up to be real polar bear, gamboling on the ice floes, and should therefore start his career as a fur coat as early as possible. When the news broke, pictures of Knut were flashed across the world's TV screens. The Chinese panda cubs, those shameless media tarts (and defending world champions of cute) had some new footage out that day, but editors didn't bat an eyelid. No-one wanted anything but Knut. Well, sorry to tell you but the Knut dossier has been more than a little sexed up. Frank Albrecht, the German animal rights activist who was supposedly advocating Knuticide, was in fact arguing the opposite side of the case. He was talking about a case in Leipzig zoo, where a brown bear cub, born in similar circumstances, had been put down. The zoo was taken to court, but justified the claim on the basis that it was cruel for a bear to be reared by humans. And they won. Mr Albrecht merely pointed out that if you were to follow the same logic, it would mean death to Knut. And before you could say 'delightful little bundle of cuteness', someone at the Bild newspaper took a firm hold of the wrong end of the stick. Knut became a star, and Mr Albrecht became an evil bear-killer to TV viewers across the world. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung explains it all here. Worth clicking that link, even if you don't read German - as the page has a huge gallery of Knut pictures. And if those aren't enough (and let's face it, no-one could ever get enough Knut) he has own blog: Knut, das Eisbdrbaby. Now you could almost believe that all the media outlets that covered the Knut story weren't interested in the actual truth, and just wanted to run some pictures of an unfeasibly cute little cub. I'm sure that's not the case. But we're glad to be able to bring you the bear facts. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2007 08:53:44 -0700 From: Rex Subject: Re: strange loops Of the many nice cross-references here, my favorite is: > another one exclaimed, "look what i just pulled out of my ass!" and > presented a surgical steel fuck horn with number of the beast engraved along > the base. > ...which unless I'm mistaken, refers by way of one of Jeffrey's posts to the complete recorded works of Phil Collins. - -Rx ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2007 08:57:41 -0700 From: Rex Subject: Re: Cigarettes and Wisty On 4/2/07, Michael Wells wrote: > > > Just received 'How very interesting' as a birthday present from my > sister-in-law > > Well, happy birthday then! > > On this end we've passed through re-entry after a few days in Disney > with two 8-year olds. The Beatles' back catalogue is set to be made available for download, their record label EMI confirmed via live webcast today (April 2). This agreement has finally been made after the Apple Corps Vs Apple Inc - over who owned the famous 'Apple' name, logo and trademark, was resolved earlier this year. The conference held by EMI, with Apple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs present was much speculated about since it's sudden announcement yesterday. Until now, all recordings by the Fab Four have not been available on any MP3 format, and this deal means that their back catalogue will soon be downloadable from the Applebs iTunes store b the biggest music download site in the world. It is unclear how soon the material will be available however, EMI CEO Eric Nicoli confirmed they were "working on it." With the demand for The Beatles in this format - demand could see the group have yet more chart toppers. The Fabs racked up a mammoth 17 No 1 singles between 1962 and 1969.
