Did we every find out who the producer was they were meeting with when Stipe and Mills were in the UK encoring with the RH&TV3, etc? Because if it was Ben Hillier, shit, he reanimated the corpse of Depeche Mode, so maybe he can save R.E.M. too. Of course, they'll have to write better songs this time, too. Or if there were two Robyn/Wilco/REM/Decemberists/whoever-he's-latched-himself-onto this week shows, and one of them was without Scott McCaughey and cost $10-$20 more, I would go for that one. Never have I had such a mediocre artist shoved in my face with such consistency. Of the 10 or so times I've seen him, only one time was intentional (and I didn't pay for it - it was an in-store appearance before I realized the true extent of his mediocrity and just wanted to see Peter Buck up close). I even moved away from his Pacific NW stomping grounds and still he follows me. It's like a curse. Tell me, what can I do to make him go away? An exorcism, perhaps? He needs to be stopped before he latches on to another of my favorite bands! Now... there's some kind of karmic, transitive equation that can be brought to bear here, but I can't quite nail it. You are bound to Tom Clark though your many exchanged "fuck you's" throughout the years... Tom Clark is hated by Buck... McCaughey is hated by you... if we could somehow reverse the polarity of the neutron flow such that Buck likes Tom, perhaps Scott will start hating you so intensely that he would avoid associating with artists you like, for fear of seeing you in the audience. A friend drove me north from San Francisco to Bodega Bay. It was a gorgeous drive (as coastal drives in CA tend to be); it was a strange day weather-wise; it was rainy and windy, and huge chunks of foam were coming off the ocean. The first time I visited San Francisco, I went to visit as many "Vertigo" sites as possible. There's a great book about the movies that Hitchcock (the *other* one) made near San Francisco: http://www.amazon.com/Footsteps-Fog-Alfred-Hitchcocks-Francisco/dp/1891661272/ref=sr_1_1/104-8458211-2127155?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175299575&sr=1-1 It goes scene-by-scene through "Vertigo", "The Birds", and "Shadow of a Doubt" and shows exactly where each scene was filmed. It's great for any traveler to the San Francisco area who happens to be a Hitchcock (the *other* one) fan. I also read some rave reviews of the drive from San Francisco to Mendocino, but never got there myself. I seem to recall that it's getting to be the time of year for the drive since the wildflowers start to bloom soon. xo - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "People with opinions just go around bothering one another." - The Buddha ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 20:35:57 -0400 From: "Lauren Elizabeth" Subject: Re: fegmaniax-digest V16 #124 Jeanne says: > I took exactly one picture, in which you can't see either Lauren or Max's face. Plus I don't think Robyn and I are quite *there* yet. I have this friend Corey from work who took good pictures of me. I generally hate pictures of myself not taken by me or Corey. Corey would sometimes employ an assistant who would wave a toy and that approach worked well. > I won't take pictures during a show because I hate the > flashes and I'm sure some of the performers do too. I was at a show at a small venue in > Philly where Neil Finn stopped a song and threatened to walk off the stage if another > flash went off. Was that the show he did at the TLA with Ed Harcourt opening? Your camera should have the option to turn the flash off. You would want to in that situation anyway as, unless you're very close, the flash will just illuminate what's pretty much right in front of you and not the performers. And if you are close, non-flash pictures always look better anyway. There should be enough light from the stage, or you can wait until a cycle of brighter lighting. xo - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "People with opinions just go around bothering one another." - The Buddha ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 20:52:14 -0400 (EDT) From: Carrie Galbraith Subject: Re: California (All the Way) was Re: Spaceland - -----Original Message----- >From: Lauren Elizabeth >Sent: Mar 30, 2007 8:17 PM > >I also read some rave reviews of the drive from San Francisco to >Mendocino, but never got there myself. Well, I happen to live just about a mile south of the Mendocino County line in the small town of Cloverdale in Sonoma County, home of Bodega Bay of course, but so much more! If you take 1 north from Bodega Bay, cross over the Russian River and then stay north on 1 (what they call "Dramamine Drive") as you weave around the bluffs above the Pacific you'll stumble across the southern outpost from the Russian American Fur Trading Co. - Fort Ross. A lovely and peaceful wooden fort on a cliff above the coast. Then there is Armstrong Redwoods - old growth coast redwoods - north on 1 from Bodega Bay, cross the Russian River and then head east on River Road. In the town of Guerneville, you'll find the turnoff. It's as peaceful as it gets in the redwoods. There are a ton of other sites in Sonoma County but if you are planning on a short visit, I wouldn't spend more than a day up here - too much to see in the thick of it in SF and environs. With that said - If you like wine and don't want to hit the overrun tourist hell that is the Napa Valley, head on up 101 about 90 miles north of SF to a town called Healdsburg and just north, turn off and go west a bit, to an area called the Dry Creek Valley. You will find some of the most delicious reds to be had in this world and a ton of small boutique wineries. More than a few boast of their 100+ year old vineyards. And yes Lauren, the wildflowers are out in full force and the drive on 128 (from 101 north) through the Anderson Valley and out to the town of Mendocino is gorgeous. There is the added bonus of a stop in Boonville at the brewpub for a Boont Amber (yum!) as well! Oops, I'm waxing... I would add, in Jeff's spirit of hitting big bullet point destination places: 5) Kings Canyon (which some say is more spectacular than Yosemite, but is usually missed with the exception of the Sequioas) 6) Mono Lake 7) Mt. Shasta 8) Death Valley Of course, I'm thinking in terms of a landscape photographer, so these are far less accessible destinations than the ones listed above. Hopefully that helps.... I almost pointed out that California was bigger than any European country save Russia, but didn't have time to double check so I didn't. Good thing, since Ukraine, Spain, France, and Sweden are all bigger too. I don't know why I was thinking Germany was the 2nd biggest European country acreage-wise. It's still funny when people from back east come to SF and wonder about dashing down to Disneyland for the day thinking it's maybe a 2-3 hour drive. "Children have always enjoyed my movies. I remember the Billy Bragg / Robyn Hitchcock tour eliciting catty comments from both fanbases about the other artist and the other artist's fans, even though for me this was one of the most optimal and compatable touring duos imaginable. Granted, I didn't get to see one of those shows myself. This was back when Robyn was on the Nashville-every-5-to-7-years schedule, rather than the current every-year-it's-Robyn-Hitchcock's-Jug-Band-Plays-the-Basement-Tapes schedule. Bragg has only been here twice in the 19 years I've been here: 1988, the day after and in the same venue as the Iggy Pop show I attended, and I skipped BB because of fatigue and the fact that the venue was an ordeal; and 2004, on that big political whatchimacallit tour with Mike Mills, Tom Morello, etc. Loved BB and wished it had been 100% him instead of just Bragg hosting and playing the occasional song. Mills had turned into a smug jackass; Morello as the "Night Watchman" or whatever he calls his solo/acoustic act was just as relentlessly, monotonously serious as Rage was. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2007 08:26:49 -0500 From: "Miles Goosens" Subject: pix from the Knut Cutest.
