When we got a second dog some years later (I was probably 11 or so, and by that time had two younger sisters and a younger brother), my initial enthusiasm for naming the dog "Dylan" (yes of course after Bob: I was in a major Dylan phase at the time) were overruled by my siblings, who thought it would be immensely amusing, given the older dog's being named Umbrella, to name the puppy Bumbershoot (or Bumby for short). I like dogs too (although not as much anymore - and I've never liked yippy, barky, or drooly dogs) - but you need to have more time to be with them, time to walk them, and more space than we had when we started adopting cats. ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2007 23:11:28 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: catnip/hoot hoot! "children of men" - i saw this one on thursday evening. visually it was stunning, and it's so well-executed that it's easy to forget how good it looks. clive owen continues building a fine career, and it's always wonderful to see julianne moore pop up. this one's damn fine movie, but it bummed me out. i always fall hook, line, and sinker for that sort of "bladerunner" vision of the future where there's chaos everywhere but still remnants of the infrastructures of civilization. everything's falling apart, and the centre barely holds, but it holds. i think there was supposed to be an uplifting message somewhere in this one, but it's likely different than the one i took away which is to appreciate the days before the shit really hits the fan. "little children" - i just saw this one this afternoon and haven't finished thinking whatever i'll end up thinking about it, but wow, it was intense. the director was the same guy who did "in the bedroom". he seems to know suburban life in the way that photographer of dark empty suburban streets knows it (i forget the photographer's name; he did the season 3 shot of "six feet under" with all the characters knee-deep in flowers). it was a very vibrant movie - it seemed to keep me on the edge of my seat, but its subject matter was just sort of regular, sort of sad, imperfect people. there was this one particularly amazing sequence to show a sort of time delay - people going to the pool day after day, spending the afternoons, and there was this set of dissolves where one scene blending into another linked perhaps by the motion of a child's legs. i'm sure there is a name for this in books about film. the idea is kind of like the end of "north by northwest" where cary grant reaches for eva marie saint's hand on the rocks but then it turns into a scene in a train cabin, linked by the reaching of the hands. "the sweet hereafter" had an amazing one of those scenes - it's link by only a shot of the sky. the camera goes from a scene, up to the sky, and when it comes back down, it's a completely different scene. dvd rentals: "extras" - i've only watched two episodes; i found it very funny. it's surprising similar to "curb your enthusiasm" and like larry david, the ricky gervais character never gets away with anything. larry may even be more tactful in a way i can't bother to articulate right now. btw, are english guys really ever called ricky? "battleship galatica" - i'm very much enjoying this; thanks to the feg recommendations. it requires a bit more attention span than i've had as of late since it really is a serial show, but i've watched the miniseries and the first three episodes. that giant courtney love cylon is getting on my nerves but there's nothing necessarily wrong with that. and starbuck so cool as to make want a girlfriend. there are a lot of characters for my minimalist little head so i barely know anyone's name yet. there's a lot of stuff i want to watch (i still haven't watched "metropolitan" or "the princess bride") but i can't complain as that's way better than than alternative. "breaking and entering" just starting at the art-house theatre and i'd kind of like to see but it depends on long it sticks around. xo - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "People with opinions just go around bothering one another." - The Buddha ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #119 ********************************
