I have frequently supported Eb, except when I disagree with him. I wish he would have let his recent flame war with you burn out faster, but I have usually been pretty open about the fact that I usually like, agree with, and stick up for Eb. I am not sure I qualify for "wingman" status because I normally don't leap in to his defense at every opportunity, but only when I think he has a point that needs support. But if I am to be called a wingman, I can live with that. (I prefer to think of myself as his bassist.) > the guy's head is exploding over minutiae-turned-personal, and everyone can > see it. While Eb can out-snark or out-dismiss even Pitchfork, he has a lot of useful things to say. I mean, he has made fun of me *countless* times for liking Rush, Tool, and the Grateful Dead. I do not take it personally, I just fire right back. I mean, anyone who runs a Claudine Longet Web site has to have a sense of humor. > the bottom of it, as that seems to sum up his "usual critical self". I actual value Eb's comments on music, and I think his criticism is generally worthwhile. If you really think his criticism is limited to "they suck" or "eh," you should read his web site, where he often backs up these capsular opinions with a few pithy sentences. I certainly think he has a more open mind, musically speaking, than many people on this List, including you. I find that when Eb dismisses a band, I need to think for myself. I certainly have a broader range of taste than he does. But when he praises a band, he's almost always right. That's worth something to me. In fact, I think he's probably the person on the List whose musical opinions I weigh the most carefully. - --Quail ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2007 13:17:45 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: Discovery of the week On 1/22/07, The Great Quail wrote: > > > > > the guy's head is exploding over minutiae-turned-personal, and everyone > can > > see it. People beyond Jeff are pissed off, obviously, and there are mean and nasty barbs flying willy-nilly. Why is that? Hint: ain't got nothing to do with my divorce. Speaking of which, much to my surprise, my divorce became final on Friday, which was kinda cool. Interestingly, my copy of the new album by Yep Roc recording artist Kristin Hersh arrived in the mail that same day. Coincidence? Well, yeah, coincidence. But I like it. Y'know those weird vans that drive around advertising and selling undoubtably hot electronics? I just saw one with all the requisite labels: "DVD - BIG SCREEN TV - PLAY STATION"... except that on the front of the van, the "P" had been peeled off of "PLAY STATION", so that head-on the van appeared to proclaim itself a "LAY STATION". Awesome. I dunno if it'd be funnier if that was vandalism or the van owner's doing... vans being wishfully thought of by their owners as lay stations and all. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2007 12:35:53 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Re: My name is "Eb", and it is my pleasure to kill Jesus Stacked Crooked wrote: > Sean Lennon-Friendly Fire> > > ...do yourself a favour, and stay far, far away from these. > they'll just > make you hate your life (and hate life in general). Sean is a marginal artist, but I like Newsom a lot. You should be well aware that Newsom is a love-her-or-hate-her act with a huge amount of acclaim from the "love" side, so you shouldn't be so confident about writing her off. He's doing plenty of soundtrack work, getting tapped for tribute albums, benefit concerts, playing Carnegie Hall, still has his big-time label contract, etc. All those sorts of star turns. He was never the type of act to become a BIG seller, so his failure to reach that level is no-big-whoop. And there are plenty of other "son of..." musicians who haven't sustained nearly as much respect or popularity. Even his sister hasn't been able to generate much attention for herself (despite the u-d-d-e-r- s). She's still just waving her hand at Rufus whenever he starts a new tour, wailing "PICK ME, PICK ME, PICK ME! I WANNA SING BACKUP!" Doesn't have anything better to do. And as if being the son of Loudon Wainwright and a McGarrigle is some golden ticket to stardom? We're not talking about Jakob Dylan here. I'm only guessing, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rufus has more fans than either of his parents. It just may be that the label "hyped" his arrival because his debut album was simply stunningly good. I'm not interested in the music of either of his parents, but his debut knocked me flat on my ass (as any long-time subscriber knows). And as if an act from Chicago can't become a "buzz band"? Yes, you're absolutely right there. One is morally compelled to pay taxes, for taxation is the price of civilization. One is also morally compelled -- if like Eddie and myself one believes it to be wrong -- to do all one can to make military spending obsolete. But I do have difficulty seeing how my buying CDs of the alternative artists I like, and going to their shows, supports the Military-Industrial Complex. I buy a lot of CDs, and many of them unheard -- often through recommendation, usually from John The CD Store Guy. I don't download much music, and almost invariably don't keep it after listening to it. I have, very occasionally, provided CDs for download, but these are to a very small audience who can't physically get the particular CD at that time.
