Members Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, and Bill Rieflin NEW YORK, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Robyn Hitchcock: Sex, Food, Death ... and Insects, a Sundance Channel original production, debuts on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 10:00 pm et/pt. Directed by John Edginton (The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story), the hour-long documentary follows British singer/songwriter Hitchcock and band The Venus 3, featuring Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Bill Rieflin (Ministry, REM), and Scott McCaughey (Minus 5, REM, The Young Fresh Fellows), as they spend a week in July of 2006 recording an album of new material at Hitchcock's house in West London. The film captures Hitchcock at work as he adds to his stockpile of wonderfully wry and twisted rock songs. The musical equivalent of black comedy, Hitchcock's songs express a fundamentally dark worldview, energized by droll wit, surreal imagery and a dynamite vocabulary. The film culminates with live footage of performances in Hoboken, NJ and Seattle in December 2006; the resulting album Ole! Tarantula was released by Yep Records in October 2006. Robyn Hitchcock: Sex, Food, Death ... and Insects also features appearances by musicians including Morris Windsor (The Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians), Nick Lowe, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Hitchcock's career spans three decades beginning with The Soft Boys in 1976. After The Soft Boys broke up in 1981, Hitchcock began recording both as a solo artist and with the band Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians (with Roger Jackson and two former members of The Soft Boys, Andy Metcalfe and Morris Windsor). In the late 1980s and early 1990s Hitchcock became better known to US audiences via college and alternative radio and MTV with the singles "Balloon Man" in 1988, "Madonna Of The Wasps" in 1989 and "So You Think You're In Love" in 1991. In 1998 Hitchcock collaborated with director Jonathan Demme on the live concert film Storefront Hitchcock (1998). Hitchcock has released over 20 albums. Robyn Hitchcock: Sex, Food, Death ... and Insects is produced by Edginton and Otmoor Productions and executive produced by Lynne Kirby and Laura Michalchyshyn for Sundance Channel. Or... is this somehow a different film encompassing the same live performances but about recording a different album? W, in short, TF? - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2007 11:12:28 -0800 From: "Stacked Crooked" Subject: My name is "Eb", and my butt smells of Pep-O-Mint! (Or is it Wint-O-Green? I can't seem to remember???) i call 2006 my most favouritest musical year ever! i would say that i "fucking love" everything down through the haram album, "very like" everything down through the morrissey album, and "quite like" everything else. i've uploaded my fave-forty to , in case there's anything here that anyone's yet to hear... Bruce Springsteen -- We Shall Overcome ~ just recently listened to it for the first time in several months, expecting my estimation of it to have fallen. instead, i'm still thinking that it's my favourite album of the decade. well, for now we'll say that it's tied with *Twin Cinema*. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs -- Show Your Bones ~ as far as i've been able to determine, their live act is irretreivably sucky. but i will go to my grave loving the holy fucking hell out of this record. Tool -- 10,000 Days ~ apparently maynard is a big fan of the yeah yeah yeahs; so much so that he wanted to take them on tour -- though was nixed by the other bandmembers. The Archie Bronson Outfit -- Derdang Derdang ~ i'm continually amazed at the beautiful racket that three-piece "outfits" are able to conjure up. i predict this band is going to be bigger than the beatles...well, bigger than oasis, anyways. i can't be the only one who thinks this sounds like the crickets -- speeded up, fronted by david byrne, and covering the velvet underground -- can i? Erase Errata -- Night Life ~ i could almost say that these four are all tied for number 2. ...almost. if this were twenty minutes longer, it might even be alone in the second spot. ...might be. Mammatus -- Mammatus ~ eb will probably sneer at me for loving this so much. but you've got my back, ain't ya, quail? this could easily be a no. 1 in a "normal" year. Gomez -- How We Operate ~ i feel that this band has a two-ton masterpiece in it. this isn't quite it, but the next album just might be. The Pink Spiders -- Teenage Graffiti ~ hey, i love *American Idiot* as much as the next guy; but this has it *all over* *American Idiot*. "new-york-city police are all fuckin' liars". what more needs to be said? as much as i love the high-octane, balls-out punk-rawkers, it's the down-tempo/piano-based numbers that have me really excited about this band's future. it was this sort of direction i had hoped sleater-kinney would take after *One Beat*. The New Pornographers -- Live! ~ if there's any justice (probably not), university curricula will in future be devoted to the majesty of the new pornographers. obviously by far and away my most anticipated release for 2007 (jesse sykes is number two, i think). it's not exactly how i would've designed a new pornos live album, but it's a nice appetizer to chew over while we anxiously await the next long-player (which, according to the latest e-mail from the band, won't be until the autumn...). Boris -- Pink Boris -- Vein Sunn O))) and Boris -- Altar ~ wow. will historians remember 2006 as the year of the unstoppable boris onslaught? The silversun Pickups -- Carnavas ~ now, why the fuck could't trail of dead make a record as good in 2006? Comets On Fire -- Avatar Six Organs Of Admittance -- The Sun Awakens ~ now, why the fuck couldn't billy corgan make a record as good in 2006? Thee Emergency -- Can You Dig It? ~ mark my fucking words: this band is going to be a force to be reckoned with. and the live act is even more electrifying. TV On The Radio -- Return To Cookie Mountain ~ i predict this will win the *Village Voice* poll. The Starlight Mints -- Drowaton The Decemberists -- The Crane Wife ~ lord knows i've had my criticisms of this band; but it certainly deserves a *lot* of credit for trying something new (and in largely succeeding). White Whale -- WWI ~ i don't really get the comparisons to arcade fire. but, whatever: this rocks like a magicus. Bonobo -- Days To Come Neil Young -- Living With War Mogwai -- Mr. Beast Mogwai -- Soundtrack (Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait) ~ dunno if it's that they've gotten better, or i've just grown to appreciate what it is that they do. but i used to be really iffy about this band, and now i'm just so in love with it. Willie Nile -- Streets Of New York ~ now, why the fuck couldn't dan bern make a record as good in 2006? "The Day I Saw Bo Diddley" might be my favourite song of the year. ...might be. Radio 4 -- Enemies Like This ~ yeah, i know: they sound a lot like the gang of four. but there are a lot worse bands one could sound a lot like. and these motherfuckers just flat-out rock. Snow Patrol -- Eyes Open The Lovely Feathers -- Hind Hind Legs The Invisible Eyes -- Laugh In The Dark M. Ward -- Post-War Wolfmother -- Wolfmother Elf-Power -- Back To The Web The Thermals -- The Body, The Blood, The Machine Jeremy Enigk -- World Waits ~ many of the songs feel too short. which is better than them feeling too long, i suppose; but it's what prevents me from placing this even higher. The Be-Good Tanyas -- Hello Love Jolie Holland -- Springtime Can Kill You Jon Auer -- Songs From The Year Of Our Demise The Arctic Monkeys -- Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Shooting At Unarmed Men -- Yes! Tinnitus! Lily Allen -- All Right, Still Joseph Arthur -- Nuclear Daydream ~ remember when bill james put together that point-system to measure a given player's chances at achieving the hall of fame? late-'80s, if i recall. along with selected players' scores, he included a subjective analysis of the player's career. about cal ripken, who'd by then already racked up enough points to make him borderline, he said something to the effect that he was one of those very few players who were "ridiculously overqualified" (i think was the terminology he used) even for the game's highest honour. but that despite this, he couldn't help be somewhat disappointed with ripken's career. i guess that's more less how i feel about joseph arthur. sumbitch is so frigging talented that he could record himself shitting into a dunce cap for half of an hour and it'd end up in my top ten. but he *ought to* be consistently cracking my top-three. on the other hand, it took me several months to warm up to this record's predecessor. so maybe the same'll happen here. (by the way, i still vividly remember james' one-sentence review for dale murphy: "dale murphy will go into the hall of fame." if somebody's got some old *Baseball Abstract*s laying around, look it up and see how good my memory is, will you?) Beirut -- The Gulag Orkestar ~ now, why the fuck could't jeff mangum make a record as good in 2006? Gregg Kowalsky -- Through The Cardial Window The Twilight Singers -- Powder Burns ~ when it's great, it's *very* great; but it at times doesn't quite click with me (mainly that's the fault of the vocals -- the music is pretty uniformly righteous). i have a feeling, though, that it could stand the test of time better than most '06 releases. The Black Angels -- Passover Muse -- Black Holes And Revelations Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins -- Rabbit Fur Coat ~ don't care for rilo kiley at all; but this is frickin' great. Haram -- Haram ~ don't think that anyone'll ever take the crown from juno; but other than juno, this may be my favourite band with a shitty vocalist. The Mountain Goats -- Get Lonely The Cold-War Kids -- Robbers And Cowards Yo La Tengo -- I Am Not Afraid Of You, And I Will Beat Your Ass Blind Guardian -- A Twist In The Myth Stolen Babies -- There Be Squabbles Ahead The Raconteurs -- Broken Boy Soldiers Gnarls Barkley -- St. Elsewhere Ray LaMontagne -- Until The Sun Turns Black Howlin' Rain -- Howlin' Rain Helvetia -- The Clever North Wind Holly Golightly -- Down The Line Centro-Matic -- Fort Recovery Viva Voce -- Get Your Blood Sucked Out Tapes 'n' Tapes -- The Loon Black Moon -- Alter The Chemistry Sonic Youth -- Rather Ripped Michael Franti & Spearhead -- Yell Fire! The Ditty-Bops -- Moon Over The Freeway Calexico -- Garden Ruin ~ i was sure that this was going to be in my top five. but in reviewing my '06 acquisitions, i found that i don't like it nearly as much as i had earlier in the year. drat. Neko Case -- Fox Confessor Brings The Flood ~ the first few songs are spectacular; but after that, it kinda tails off. *Blacklisted* is still her best solo effort, in my opinion. Morrissey -- Ringleader Of The Tormenters Scissorfight -- Jaggernaut The Lights -- Diamonds And Dirt ~ i expected this to place so, so much higher. but what're you gonna do? Ed Harcourt -- The Beautiful Lie Mountain Con -- Sancho Paz ~ definitely their best to-date, though still doesn't hold a candle to the live act. Head Like A Kite -- Random Portraits Of The Home Movie ~ why, oh why, can't the rest of the album be as brilliant as "Noisy At The Circus"? just *thinking* about that song implants it into my head for the rest of the day. Mission Of Burma -- The Obliterati Bobby Bare Jr.'s Young Criminals' Starvation League -- The Longest Meow The Village Green -- Feeling The Fall Ani DiFranco -- Reprieve Danielson -- Ships Fear Before The March Of Flames -- The Always-Open Mouth ~ i'll say it again: punk rock needs more piano. Quasi -- When The Going Gets Dark Grant-Lee Phillips -- Nineteen-Eighties Against All Authority -- The Restoration Of Chaos And Order Kaki King -- Until we Felt Red Destroyer -- Destroyer's Rubies Caliban -- The Undying Darkness Daughters -- Hell Songs Still Itching To Hear: Iceage Cobra William Elliott Whitmore DeVotchka Nina Nastasia Shearwater Vietnam Dishonourable Mention: Robyn Hitchcock: you know, i used to dislike, without fail, every new release upon first hearing. but that first hearing always planted the barbs, compelling me to keep listening. my appreciation of the recording would grow with each listen, until i found myself absolutely loving the record. this pattern ended, of course, with *Luxor* and *Spooked*. but what i find particularly troubling is that even those who, like me, didn't care for these two records still find the new one a return to form -- yet i've only listened to it once-and-a-half, and have absolutely no desire to listen to it again. gargh. Beck: okay, here follows my quick review of beck's career. *Mellow Gold*: awesome. *One Foot In The Grave*: pretty good. *Odelay*: awesome. *Mutations*: unbelievably awesome. *Midnight Vultures*: crap. *Sea Change*: awesome. *Guero*: crap. *The Information*: crap. so if you're scoring at home, you'll notice that four out of his first six releases were awesome, and only one of six were crap. however!, you'll also notice that three of the last four have been crap. this is not the trendline he wants, at this point in his career, to be following (in my opinion). Lisa Germano: the less said about this, the better. Band Of Horses: oh, my god. this band sucks so much ass. Joanna Newsom: oh, my god. if there *is* a god, could you please, please, please, please, please, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease make it stop? Thom Yorke Built To Spill Trail Of Dead: what the hell happened to this band? The Drive-By Truckers: what the hell happened to this band? the live act has always been much better than the records, but at least the records used to be pretty good. Sean Lennon: it's just difficult to believe that somebody thought it would be a good idea to release this. The Flaming Lips: it's almost like some kind of weird inversion has taken place. damned near to all of the artists releasing "dishonourable" product in '06 were among my most-bankable faves; even while it was a year of incredibly super-fantastic recordings. Loose Fur: i certainly don't *hate* this. but i certainly don't love this, either. and, i mean, even if they don't quite capture "it" on record, wilco are certainly one of the five best live acts in the world right now. and how many people have ever been able to say that they lead one of the five best live acts in the world? so i'd prefer him to quit wasting his time with this trivial-if-agreeable "project" (or whatever you may call it). on a related note, maynard is apparently finished with a perfect circle. tweedy ought to take a page out of his book. Smoosh: hey, they're allowed a sophomore slump, ain't it? Dan Bern: gawd, remember when i used to throw my underpantses at him? Audioslave: stick a fork in this band. Regina Spektor: her between-song concert-banter is very entertaining. otherwise, i just can't get into her at all. Bob Dylan: i actually don't *mind* it. but after *'Love And Theft'*, it's a major let-down. Mastodon Me First And The Gimme Gimmes: loved the first album; but since then they've just seemed tired. The Scissor Sisters: another soph slump. My Morning Jacket: i hate this band very much. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2007 20:45:32 +0100 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Re: My name is "Eb", and my butt smells of Pep-O-Mint! Too early to say if I really like it, but I can't see why you would think it's *so* bad? - -- Sebastian Hagedorn Ehrenfeldg|rtel 156, 50823 Kvln, Germany http://darkstar.spinfo.uni-koeln.de/~hgd/ "Being just contaminates the void" - Robyn Hitchcock ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2007 12:30:51 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Re: My name is Bobby Brown, and now I just smell like Vaseline Stacked Crooked wrote: > Bruce Springsteen -- We Shall Overcome > The Yeah Yeah Yeahs -- Show Your Bones > Gomez -- How We Operate > Comets On Fire -- Avatar > The Thermals -- The Body, The Blood, The Machine > Wolfmother -- Wolfmother > The Twilight Singers -- Powder Burns > Joseph Arthur -- Nuclear Daydream > Jeremy Enigk -- World Waits > Michael Franti & Spearhead -- Yell Fire! > Viva Voce -- Get Your Blood Sucked Out > Tapes 'n' Tapes -- The Loon > Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins -- Rabbit Fur Coat > The Black Angels -- Passover > Muse -- Black Holes And Revelations > The Raconteurs -- Broken Boy Soldiers > Gnarls Barkley -- St. Elsewhere >>>> Ditty-Bops -- Moon Over The Freeway > Ray LaMontagne -- Until The Sun Turns Black > Bobby Bare Jr.'s Young Criminals' Starvation League -- The Longest > Meow > The Mountain Goats -- Get Lonely > Thom Yorke > Built To Spill > Trail Of Dead > The Drive-By Truckers > The Cold-War Kids -- Robbers And Cowards > Destroyer -- Destroyer's Rubies Ehh on all of these. > Morrissey -- Ringleader Of The Tormenters > Grant-Lee Phillips -- Nineteen-Eighties In the "Ehh" Hall of Fame. > Tool -- 10,000 Days > Ani DiFranco -- Reprieve Ptooey. > Mammatus -- Mammatus > ~ eb will probably sneer at me for loving this so much. but > you've got my > back, ain't ya, quail? this could easily be a no. 1 in a "normal" > year. Possibly (it won the Idolator poll), but it sure doesn't appeal to me. If it doesn't win, it'll probably be Modern Times. > The Starlight Mints -- Drowaton Near miss.
