Atlanta beat Minnesota on a Morten Andersen field goal, after Gary Anderson's only miss of the entire season, a 38 yarder. Minnesota became the first 15-1 team to not make the Super Bowl. Mike has to be a master of concise writing - in this case he only just exceeded his 200 word brief. Hes got an interesting perspective too, barely having followed Robyns solo career, but having seen the Soft Boys on several occasions while a student in Cambridge between 1976 and 1980. AN EVENING with Robyn Hitchcock isnt just about the music. Tunes there are in plenty, but there are entertaining discourses too on a plethora of subjects, from the merits of Sheffields tram systems past and present, to the possible truth about Princess Dianas alleged assassination. Thirty years a performer, Hitchcock seems to be the very embodiment of the term Cult Artist, seemingly loved by his musical peers more than the public at large. Evidence of his high quality connections can be seen in his band, with REMs Peter Buck weaving unobtrusive excellence stage right - and even later showing his prowess on the drums. Floating voters hoping however for another impromptu mini-gig featuring the rest of Atlantas finest (which happened last week in Oxford) were doomed to disappointment. Kicking off with Adventure Rocket Ship, a chunky value for money set featured selections from current album Ole! Tarantula plus oldies going all the way back to Give It To The Soft Boys from the dim and distant 70s. Television was a particular highlight, while Listening To The Higsons (Im sure people did) is always a worthwhile pusuit. Cover version fun too, with a faithful rendition of The Balland Of John And Yoko, not a Beatles tune often selected for attention. A good night all round. The rest of the band sounded superb - drums, guitars and vocals all very clear - but Scott's bass sounded like one big fart machine for want of a better description. I didn't think this gig ranked up there as excellent - it was okay, but nowhere near as good as a lot of the Robyn gigs I've been to. BTW, Robyn did mention the Sgt. I was thinking today, that if these MSF gigs keep coming, I'd like to see him move on from Syd, Beatles, and Dylan (not an MSF, but...). It would be wicked cool for them to cover a VU album, like "White Light/ White Heat". Scott provided much-needed high notes on 'Flesh Number One' and was a pillar of strength through the whole performance, unlike last time I saw them. Bill really hits the drums hard on JfS! As last time, Robyn was fascinated by the Bristol trams which he claimed stopped in 1941. 'Aha!' I thought, 'He's going to sing 'Trams of old London' - but he didn't. > Encores (with Morris Windsor) > Queen Elvis > See Emily Play > Kingdom of Love > Queen of Eyes > Listening to the Higsons * All old faves except 'See Emily Play' which I was not expecting at all. Wonderful slide guitar playing by Robyn, positive drumming by Bill, excellent support by Peter and Scott. New verse to me on QoE: 'I wish I was in, I wish I was out, but she only wishes she could tickle your trout'. All swapped instruments for Higsons which featured Morris on guitar and Peter on drums. Peter and Scott very chatty after the gig, Scott admired my 'Prawn to be Wild' T-shirt . Morris said that the Japanese OT had him performing on the bonus track which turns out to be 'Embryo Twirl' . 'Sorry to be so boring' I said asking Robyn to sign 'Ole Tarantula'. 'I can think of a lot of things which are more boring than signing autographs' he replied. Great to see Brian, Matt, Chrissie, Jim and various other familiar faces. "I only ever see you at Robyn Hitchcock gigs" said one bloke. 'Don't get around much any more' I thought to myself. - - Mike Godwin Appendix: HOW TO... Tickle a trout From: Independent on Sunday, The, Oct 24, 2004 by Oliver Bennett "Ian Jowett is a fish farmer, from Yorkshire. He has never flipped a trout out of a river in his life - honest, Guv'nor. This is how you do it, apparently. You go to the trout stream: obviously, you need a place where you can gain access to the water. When the trout see you, they scatter, and often they go to hide under a rock or something. At this point the best thing you can do is to hide as much of yourself as possible. What you need to do is to reach over and get your hand into the water so that you can feel the fish in its little hiding place. The idea then is that you gently handle the fish, and stroke it from the top down. If you make any sharp movements, the trout will get spooked and dart off, so you have to be very careful and discreet. It's funny - as long as you are gentle they don't seem to mind - maybe it's near their reproductive organs or something, and they enjoy the feeling. Anyway, you gradually work your hand down so that it's under the fish. You have to find the pivotal spot under the belly and then, in one quick move, flip it out on to the riverbank. It only really works with smaller, stream trout under one-and-a-half pounds. Anything above that, and the fish is really too heavy for it to work". ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #13 *******************************
