There's obvious craftsmanship and that in itself makes it hard for me to describe something as "crap". I'd be more inclined to call it "uninspired" or "boring" instead. Still, it's definitely a disappointment! I guess your "track which pains you to know it even exists" is either Love Revolution or Aria Largo? I can see why, but both have some merit in my book. BTW, I got the first Rufus Wainwright today. After my first time through I don't believe I like it better than his others, mostly because it's all piano. I miss songs like "Grey Garden", "One Man Guy" or "California". I know we all have different tastes, but for me, the last few Feg Digests have made for one hell of an entertaining read. Why, when I came home from work yesterday and found a FegDigest AND the new Entertainment Weekly, I gave EW to my wife! But I thought today's episode was more "desperate housewives season two..." a little bit of the old been there done that. I hope the writers can come up with new material or it's the same fate as the OC... As it stands, if the writing doesn't sharpen up and the series doesn't get cancelled, I'm going to have to take matters into my own hands. Right now, for example, I am an eighth an inch away from leaving this list! No... make that a sixteenth an inch away. I swear, if tomorrows episode is filled with the same pratfalls, I'll switch to a thirtysecond of an inch away. And if you're still going on about the same plot points when I'm at work on Monday, I just might have to upgrade to one sixtyfourth an inch away from leaving. And I mean it, if you refuse to advance the story by Tuesday, I'm bypassing 128th and going ALL THE WAY to exactly 1/256th an inch away from unsubscribing after over a decade on this list... In musical news, I've heard a bit of Tony Hadley's new Big Band CD and loved it! Thats Entertainment, Baby Blatzy Don't Forget, February is National Snack Month, a time for merry snackertainment with family and friends! No nukes! Hugs not drugs! CD-R recorders look quite expensive, but if you're wanting cheap, removable media, they may be your only option. I haven't used MiniDisc since it went HighMD, so I don't know if there are decent units with all the ins and outs that are required for making good recordings. I've used a couple of recorders: * iRiver H120 with Rockbox firmware -- an iPod-sized box with a 20GB hard drive. Will hold 20-30 hours of uncompressed music before downloading is required. No longer made, but available on eBay for about $200. Make sure you use the Rockbox firmware - the stock one is terrible. * Edirol (R-1, I think) -- little box that takes flash memory cards. You will need to have several cards if you're planning to be away from a computer for a long time. About $400 + the cost of cards. Has built-in mics. I've heard good things about the Zoom H-4 recorder, but apparently it's rather plasticky. I was in my car when I first heard it, and it was so agonizingly wretched -- and, to make matters worse, LONG -- that I felt like pulling over to primal scream. Why, Alex...WHY? It was so terrible that even the half-written (one-eighth-written?) final track sounded good in comparison. I can't recall the last time I heard a song so bad on an album which I wanted to *keep*. Actually, I don't know the last time I heard a song so bad, period. In contrast, "Aria Largo" was mere garden-variety "crap." We weren't too far apart on the other judgments. The four tracks I rated "pretty good" were the first three and "February's Quiet." I started to run last night, and quit purely due to *cold*. Wasn't so bad while walking, but as soon as I started moving and the breeze rushed into my face....brrrrr. Couldn't handle it. I just don't have the exercise wardrobe for this. It was nearing 30, after midnight -- nutty-cold for these parts. The "Stock Footage Awards" skit on last night's SNL duplicated one of my own favorite "riffs," and now I can never use it again.
