R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe): Thom Yorke The Ronettes (Estelle Bennett, Ronnie Spector, Nedra Talley): Chrissie Hynde or Alicia Keys (if they can find some connection between Keys and The Ronettes) Patti Smith: Bono, of course Van Halen (Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar, Alex Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth): Lars Ulrich maybe. The hardest to come up with someone. And of course, the question is: while non-VH brother hates Alex and Eddie the most these days, and will any of the other three not show up because of it or talk smack from the stage. My guess is Anthony both hates them the most and is most likely to not show; Roth to say shit. No chance in hell Roth doesn't show up, of course. I mean, he'll show up at a bar mitzvah. Jo-SIGH-uh Vor-ENK-eh (as in Canadian "eh", not a schwa) m-by-nee-muh-RAA-muh In case you're wondering, the story is that back in the early days of colonial settlement, all documents in Tonga, Fiji and Samoa were printed by the Fiji Times newspaper. Because so many names contained "m"s and "n"s, they ran out of movablee type o those letters and decided that names with those sounds followed by another consonant would just use the following consonant. Hence words like Voreqe having an unwritten N in the centre. It's also why Tonga used to be spelt Toga and why the international airport in American Samoa is pronounced PANG-oh-pang-oh but spelt Pago Pago. As worn out as he may be, the industry people probably don't realize it yet, and he has given too many "memorable" speeches for them to turn him down, and he'll want to induct Patti, so they'll let him. In saner, less post-traumatic news, this morning's listen was the first disc of the Slanted & Enchanted deluxe reissue. Haven't played this album in years. I thought my feelings about it might change with time but, nope, I still just see it as a very strong debut...yet not really a "classic" (though obviously it IS, based on so many others' enshrinement of it). The real magic for me all comes in the first five tracks, and most of the rest just seems a little too half-assed. And then there's "Two States," which is just inexcusably markesmithsy. Wow, pretty delusional there. Interestingly, I have been in the same club as you several times, and totally ignored you, because I was with actual human friends and didn't feel like explaining to them how I knew such a surly, pasty loser asshole, or have the artists see me associating with some creep who's probably stalked them for years or something. Nice hat, though. (Snicker.) Personally, I wouldn't want to be in any club that'd have me as a member. - -Cathy-Man ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #4 ******************************
