Number one: Justin Timberlake's "My Love." What respect I may have had for that snarky little prats over to Pitchfork just a Louise Woodward-styled shaking, and I'm not sure it can recover. - --- http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/40070/Staff_List_The_Top_100_Tracks_of_2006/ - --- Welcome to Pitchfork's best of 2006. Today we present our 100 favorite songs of 2006; the top albums come at you tomorrow. Before we get to it, a few disclaimers: 1) Note the semantic shift: Unlike this list's equivalent in previous years, for 2006 we extended the candidate pool beyond the confines of singledom-- basically any song released or covered in 2006, whether a single or not, was eligible for this list. 2) To accommodate that shift, we doubled the size: One hundred songs instead of last year's 50 singles. 3) And! Thanks to the divine grace of internet, you can legally download, stream, or watch videos of nearly every song on this list while you read about how awesome they are. 4) Finally, you might think us crazy for not including a certain ubiquitous Gnarls Barkley song, but enough of us heard it last year to vault it into 2005's singles pantheon; thus, it didn't qualify for 2006. 100. I think the two main factors here (assuming, cynically, that it's not just that they like all these songs) are, one, the increasing prevalence of hip-hop production (and respected hip-hop producers) working with popsters, and two, uh, just a general increase in popularity of upbeat poppiness in general. This has been building for a couple of years now; among some of my relatively younger and musically connected acquaintances, it's been a pretty regular thing to include a couple-few pop hits amongst their otherwise-obscurity-laden best-of lists for the last several years. When I hear these songs (and I swear before God and the Flying Spaghetti Monster that until last week I'd never even heard Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy," to give you an idea of how much under a rock I've been living), I have two typical reactions: (1) "hmm, that's not as gawdawful terrible as I would have expected - might even be a good song in there..." but (2) "why do they have to freakin oversing every last damn note?" Wait - there's no such thing as a single *note* in these songs: every pitch is melisma'd or swooped or dipped or aspirated or growled or vibrato'd to death. And often, the production (however interesting from an ear-candy perspective) is a bit glossy for my taste - I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it's the sonic equivalent of whatever it is that makes every menu item at McDonald's taste the same. So even the very best of these things (from the last couple of years, for me that might be Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone") finds me going, yeah, let's hear someone else sing it. (And on that one, we did: Ted Leo covered it. And made me go, hmm, maybe a little more polish would work too... Apparently I'm not easily pleased.) Some compilation or other I received or downloaded has that Timberlake song on it (wait: did Timbalake produce? There's a match made in onomastic heaven...). I haven't heard it yet (really). My prediction is I'll feel exactly the same way. (Last track I had that reaction to from amongst the pop chart hits I otherwise don't hear but ended up on a friend's mix: something or other by Christina Aguilera. Not as desperately terrible as I would have imagined; oversung to hell.) But hey: I'm definitely going over to the P-fork (that's what all the cool kids call it, uh, right?) to sample some of the listed tracks that I actually want to hear. So thanks for the link, if nothing else! - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2006 21:02:53 -0000 From: "Matthijs van Geldere" Subject: DIME: Robyn Hitchcock - 3 Kings Pub - Dec 17th 2006 - Syd Barrett Tribute (2nd night!) Why do live albums feature all that incessant applause? I mean, yes, the audience was making that noise - that doesn't mean we want to hear it listening at home. Especially since if you listen closely, you'll realize that in mixing the recording, the engineers typically pull up and pull down the crowd noise so it occupies the space between tracks. And it seems like live albums feature about 30 seconds of applause between each track. Who wants to hear that? Crossfade it quickly between tracks; don't stick a damned minute of it on the end after the last track. Hrrmph. 2. Is anyone here a screech-whistler? Because there appears always to be at least a couple of those in every live concert recording. I've been fortunate enough never to have to have sat near one of those - but what compels someone to blow their damned lungs out through compressed lips every five seconds?
