[Trying to remember the last time I read a press release about a tour which didn't "kick off"...] A HOLIDAY SURPRISE IN STORE FOR FANS OF GRANT-LEE PHILLIPS AND AIMEE MANN PHILLIPS TO JOIN MANN ON CHRISTMAS VARIETY SHOW TOUR November 30, 2006 - Cambridge, MA - The holiday season is always full of surprises, and there's a particularly pleasant one in store for fans of singer-songwriters extraordinaire Aimee Mann and Grant-Lee Phillips. Mann's first Christmas album, One More Drifter In the Snow, was released last month on her own label SuperEgo Records, featuring seasonal classics old and new. Among them is an imaginative rendering of the delightful and dastardly You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch from Dr. Seuss's timeless Yuletide epic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, featuring a memorable narration by Phillips. Inspired by this studio collaboration, the former Grant Lee Buffalo frontman was invited to join the former Till Tuesday frontwoman for the First Annual Aimee Mann Christmas Variety Show. Phillips will, among other things, perform songs of his own, including selections from his forthcoming studio release and will appear on all dates. Phillips's cameo appearance on Mann's tour comes on the heels of his highly successful album nineteeneighties album (Zok/Rounder), an affectionate tribute to the rock underground and some of the artists and songs that influenced him. The eclectic collection has been described on National Public Radio as a labor of love which fits smoothly into his homespun, heartfelt catalogue. The tour kicks off on December 4 at Bimbo's in San Francisco and (in the spirit of classic Christmas variety shows past) will feature appearances by well-known comedians, Fred Armisen and Paul Tompkins plus a variety of special guests. "There used to be a time when the belly dancers, balladeers and sharpshooters all rode in one caravan." Phillips says. " I'd like to think this might be one of those occasions." Says Phillips, "Ya know, one big traveling holiday circus on ice. Step right this way!" TOUR DATES 12/4 San Francisco, CA: Bimbo's (hosted by Paul F. Not to advocate too much devilment, but one assumes the presentation would be evaluating Quatro's gender transgressions vis-a-vis the standards of her time and her chosen field (rawk). Actually, prior to this year, the only thing I really know about Susie Q was that when I was 16 there was a picture in my Harmony Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock of one of her album covers which showed a drawing her singing into a Shure SM-57 which was shattering like glass, presumably from the force of her voice. Kinda masculine, but then again, that same thing was associated with enornous matronly opera divas. I think I kinda knew that she played a Tuscadero on Happy Days, but I only dimly remember Pinky, not Leather... those were two different characters, right? I've never knowingly heard a single song by her. Oh, to look at the Harmony Illustrated Encycopedia of Rock for the first time again. Don't think it had an entry for the Incredible String Band, though. Yeah, I see what you mean, I guess what I said is quite open-ended. I was reacting more to the female masculinity thing. It seems like it's being celebrated and, well, I don't agree. Women don't need to play men in order to fit in. "Female cock-rocker," oh please. To me, Suzi Quatro is being taken out of context of the glam scene. To me, glam was about androgyny, so why single out a female being masculine? That seems only part of the bigger picture. Her contribution is absolutely great and worth mentioning, of course, but only as a part of the whole!! - -Julie ____________________________________________________________________________________ Cheap talk?
