Peter on drums, Scott on guitar and Bill on bass. Robyn gayly flailing his hands around and being quite energenic and dancy. Really a great show and great atmosphere sitting between the 2 Michaels. During one song I got a great back massage from Michael Wells mimicking the drums on my back! Glad you made it home safe and sound. That's a good 4 hour ride, but I'm sure you were pretty pumped up. After the show Michael Bachman, Tanya and I waiting around and Robyn, Peter and Scott all came out to sign things. They stayed out quite a while and Peter was in great spirits. We talked to him a little bit about the differences between touring with REM and Robyn. Really nice guy. The Michaels and I joked between us before the show about asking Peter the 'real story' about Tom Clark. I think Bachman and I came close to saying something, or maybe I came close... glad we didn't, but he does seem to have a sense of humor. Robyn signed some things and we breifly spoke of Tony Mansfield and New Musik (to my delight!) (I had him sign my Captain Sensible "I'm A Spider" single which has a nice Robyn cartoon drawing on the back cover). I'm beat. Stayed up in Michigan and took Tanya shopping all day for her birthday. I promise I won't tell anyone how old you are. Pregame nosh with the Detroit ladies, Nuppster and his lovely wife Tanya (also having a birthday) and Mr. Bachman. Me raving about last night's gig, Brian getting thoroughly excited and Carissa looking pensive. Magic Bag is smaller, and the crowd looks to be maybe 300-400. Same opener, still plays everything in Am and at roughly the same speed. The obvious set list difference was dropping a couple of the iffier numbers from the night before (Chinese Bones, W Sucks, etc) and subbing in rock-solid takes on 'Beautiful Queen,' 'Underground Sun,' and 'Flesh #1.' Really kept the energy level up; otherwise pretty much the same stuff in roughly the same order with 'Priest' moved to later. Seemed like Peter spent much more time on the 12 string Epiphone than he did in Chicago, i.e. the Rick seemed to be only for power rockers like 'Rocket Ship' and 'Authority Box.' Also the introduction to 'Briggs' has gotten completely out of hand. A man's got to know his song introduction limits, Robyn. Less political quips, but a funny improv on Scott being a "lodestone" and effecting a population increase everywhere he goes (in response to some over-eager Scott fans in the crowd). Peter was again in fine form, it is really special how he has figured out where Robyn is going to be and manages to fill in with complimentary and interesting parts. I commented on this to him after last night's gig, which he seemed pleased to hear but just said "well, we play similar styles." Nuppy made a good observation on how well Scott's harmonies helped - especially on 'Beautiful Queen.' I hadn't considered that Robyn was probably singing harder (over a loud band) and longer (90 minutes per night, no instrumentals) than usual and is surely glad for the coverage. Overall the band seemed a little tighter tonight, but its different degrees of very, very good so that's a small quibble. Damn glad to have made two shows. Michael Ps. Yes, of course--one reason I wish Novoselic had ended up running for lieutenant governor of Washington state (he had been thinking of doing so a few years ago)--he would have gotten rid of insane anti-drug Brad Owen and he would have had a good platform to push IRV. On the website of the promoter for the Robyn & Venus 3 Dublin tourdate on January 16th 2007. Cheers Matthijs http://www.aikenpromotions.com/event.asp?eid=386 THE MINUS 3 and ME by Robyn Hitchcock One foggy afternoon in November 1984, I ran into Peter Buck outside the Highgate branch of the Cat Protection League. He knew me because he used to sell our records at Wuxtry, the indie shop in Athens, GA; I knew him because he was the guitarist in REM, America's answer to The Smiths. Like me, he was looking for a cat to protect. Six months later, he called me. 'Wanna drop by? We're making an album with Joe Boyd in Wood Green, in back of Bejam's '. I couldn't find Bejam's when I drove to Wood Green, even though I lived only two miles away. 24 hours later, when I arrived at the studio, Peter handed me a guitar, and asked me if I knew the chords to "Ocean", by the Velvet Underground. So began a picking relationship that is now old enough to drink alcohol in the USA. Over the next few years, Peter played on three of my albums with The Egyptians; in 1989 he gave us the opening spot on REM's "Green" tour and joined us onstage every night, too. Later that year, Scott McCaughey sent me a postcard from Seattle. His glorious combo The Young Fresh Fellows had opened for us in 1986. He asked if I would produce his next album "My Chartreuse Opinion". The songs were great, but I felt I was no producer; nonetheless, we stayed in touch. He told me that he, too, used to sell our records in Seattle, and that he'd befriended Peter Buck when REM recorded there in 1991. Two years later, Peter himself moved to Seattle, founded the Minus 5 with Scott, and recruited him into the expanding REM. Meanwhile, in 1992, I took my daughter Maisie to a Lollapalooza show in California, where her compass was flickering towards Ministry. Behind the bone roadies and Al Jourgensen, the dapper figure of Bill Rieflin was adding human drums to the mechanized apocalypse of Ministry. Maisie and I said hello to him afterwards and he seemed, as Kimberley Rew says, like a nice enough bunch. When Bill Berry left REM in 1997, his eventual replacement was Bill Rieflin. By 2001, Scott, Bill and Peter were 1/2 REM, 3/5ths of the Minus 5, and a chunk of TuaTara. We always play together when I'm in Seattle, and this September they joined me in the studio there. The session was a good one, and when I arrived at my next show in neighbouring Portland, I found Bill, Scott and Peter waiting for me on stage, soundchecking. After a few years intensive, REM are taking a break until next summer. Meanwhile, here in dark January, will you welcome, please: The Minus 3 and me. Your cat is being protected. Well, my real point was that if I tried to do that - let's say something semi-reasonable, like 4 hours a day - it would take about 3.5 years...during which time I'd have acquired more CDs. Effectively, in other words, it's impossible for me to listen to my entire collection. There are those who'd say that it's absurd to have such a collection, of course - which overlooks that the point isn't to listen to *all* of it, it's to listen to *any* of it. In other words, it's a question of selection. And of course, there's probably the equivalent of about 1/4 to 1/3 more if you start counting LPs, cassettes, and mp3s.
