The Decemberists' musical kin also include frequently cited influence, Robyn Hitchcock, whose song "The Ghost Ship" Meloy recently proclaimed his favourite song ever. "I just think it's the best story ever written of what it might mean to be on a ghost ship particularly a ghost ship in Robyn Hitchcock's universe," he says, adding that he has an email correspondence with the English songwriter. Indeed, Hitchcock's nasally whispers about translucent maidens and abandoned manuscripts provides considerable insight into Meloy's muse. By fortuitous coincidence, the day after my chat with Meloy, I'm scheduled to interview Hitchcock (for a feature running in next week's Eye Weekly about his Nov. 10 Mod Club appearance). Our conversation naturally turns to The Decemberists. "Colin does have that sea-shanty thing about him, doesn't he?" Hitchcock quips. "Colin is one of those Englishmen that could only be American. He distills a kind of Englishness living over in Portland, Oregon that would be impossible to sustain in London. But I'm flattered he likes the song. That's terrific." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2006 22:46:42 EST From: HwyCDRrev@aol.com Subject: ROBYN ON CONAN November 21 (actually 22) Return-Path: Received: from rly-yh03.mx.aol.com (rly-yh03.mail.aol.com [172.18.180.67]) by air-yh03.mail.aol.com (v113.6) with ESMTP id MAILINYH34-2bb454c0469155; Fri, 03 Nov 2006 22:09:47 -0500 Received: from ms-smtp-02.nyroc.rr.com (ms-smtp-02.nyroc.rr.com [24.24.2.56]) by rly-yh03.mx.aol.com (v113.6) with ESMTP id MAILRELAYINYH39-2bb454c0469155; Fri, 03 Nov 2006 22:09:30 -0500 Received: from [192.168.15.100] (cpe-24-195-96-164.nycap.res.rr.com [24.195.96.164]) by ms-smtp-02.nyroc.rr.com (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id kA437KpD011352; Fri, 3 Nov 2006 22:07:20 -0500 (EST) X-Sender: duplanet@pop.nycap.rr.com Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2006 22:07:20 -0500 To: Recipient List Suppressed:; From: Museum of Robyn Hitchcock Subject: Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3 November US tour dates - and rare UK vinyl available X-Virus-Scanned: Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine X-AOL-IP: 24.24.2.56 X-Mailer: Unknown (No Version) Touring in support of their newly released Oli! Robyn sounded very good. Lots of Egyptians material tonight. I could only hear a bit of the soundcheck because the lobby of the hotel was pretty noisy. I caught bits of: Ole Tarantula Cynthia Mask Nietzsche's Way and Glass Hotel (Robyn wore a green and black checked shirt) The opener, Al Perry, was okay, and he ended his set on a strong note. He had a local poet sing one of her works over his guitar backing, and it turned out to be about a foot fetishist with a liking for smelly feet. Robyn came out (black & white psychedelic checked shirt) and told the crowd it would be an evening of death oriented songs. He started the set on a Martin acoustic that he borrowed from the opener. Chinese Bones When I Was Dead Ole Tarantula Devil's Coachman Full Moon in My Soul My Wife and My Dead Wife Ghost in You (Psychedelic Furs) Sleeping With Your Devil Mask (switch to electric--blue Telecaster) The Wolf House (instrumental) I Often Dream of Trains You & Oblivion (he tuned down for this and didn't really get the tuning right) (add Nick Luca on keyboards) Listening to the Higsons Airscape Freeze (encore break) I Don't Remember Guilford Queen of Eyes Again, a really enjoyable show, but it felt too short. I kind of wish I hadn't picked up the setlist afterward because Robyn had listed several songs that he cut from the set: Ghost Ship N.Y. Doll ...And More Again (Love) Mexican God Sometimes a Blonde Creeped Out the President and Terrapin (Barrett) Afterward, the hotel front desk let Robyn set up shop at their counter (CDs only--Ole Tarantula and the Rhino edition of I Often Dream of Trains). He stayed and signed things for people, and was more chatty than he often is. He signed a Soft Boys poster that I had found recently, and Robyn was curious about the going rate for it. He was a bit disappointed that it wasn't a higher priced item, but like I pointed out to him, it was the only one like this I had ever seen and I think I got the poster for less than it is worth. I'm not completely sure why it was printed, but it seems to be a promo item related to the Anglepoise Lamp single on Radar Records. It is fairly large, maybe 2 1/2 by 3 feet, and says The Soft Boys in odd three-dimensional letters, and then also uses normal, doubled letters above to make it clearer what is written below (TtHhEe SsOoFfTt BbOoYySs). No printing information or record company information is listed. (contact me for photos). Does anyone have some information about this one? Anyway, I'm tired and rambling on. Time to get some sleep. later, Marc If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason. He may have been to Vancouver, but not to Victoria. If I wanted to travel to Seattle I could drop into the Crocodile Cafe, but that involves staying there overnight. I'll just have to be content with watching Storefront Hitchcock - thanks Caroline - I will return that to you! Promise! For those who don't remember or haven't read Steven Pinker, Jeff's sentence (and it is a sentence) can be parsed as "Buffalo buffalo [a variety of buffalo native to Buffalo, NY, presumably] that are buffaloed by (other) Buffalo buffalo themselves buffalo other Buffalo buffalo." Or: Divided into conceptually coherent segments: [{Buffalo buffalo} {Buffalo buffalo} {buffalo}] [{buffalo} {Buffalo buffalo}]. There. That should clear that up. And I think I've set the record for most uses of the word "buffalo" in a single post. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Nov 2006 10:17:23 -0700 From: "Marc Holden" Subject: Re: Club Congress, Nov. 3rd One more, important point I forgot to add last night. Perhaps my favorite RH gig and maybe the best sounding of all my RH recordings. Some chatty moments from the crowd, but not any more annoying than the kitchen sounds from Largo. Get this show. A very interesting show. Robyn plays acoustic guitar for 48 minutes, says goodnight and leaves the stage, but it was more like a short intermission. He returns and plays another 45 minutes on electric guitar. Great setlist, including many then not yet released Moss Elixir songs, and ending with a great Airscape.
