This complaint goes right along with my recent observation about how many AllMusic bios start with formulaically describing the artist as "one of the [something]." Sellersville, Baltimore - and no Philly? Weird. Philly had a whole lot of love for the Decemberists last night, I have to say. The Electric Factory was sold out, crammed with adorable scenesters. There was a lot of playfulness to offset the inherent melancholy of so many of the songs: Colin split the room into three parts, the two halves of the floor and the balcony, and got a pretty well-coordinated round of "La-de-da-de-das" going during "Sixteen Military Wives". He also coaxed sections into clearing a couple of spaces and having what he called little dance contests. It was an impressive display of control over a crowd that had just been markedly hostile toward the opener (although, understandably so. Lavender Diamond's lead singer was like Julee Cruise's perky, ditsy daughter - and I don't mean that in a good way. Anyone seeing the Decemberists after this date should count themselves lucky they're switching out opening bands). I hadn't heard most of The Crane Wife yet, and it was good to hear it live first. It was a very enjoyable show, and a perfect warm-up for seeing Robyn in a couple of weeks. For U.S. folks, some of the newer DVD players will play PAL (mine is a Philips and I also have a Cyberhome.) It's worth a few bucks if you like watching e.g. Dime bootlegs on the television. Actually, it seems like the less you spend on a player, the more flexible it's inclined to be in regard to format type. I think I paid $40 for the Cyberhome with a $30 rebate. Supposedly it's junky but I've not had a problem with it so far. xo Lauren - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "People with opinions just go around bothering one another." - The Buddha ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2006 20:08:30 -0700 From: "Marc Holden" Subject: Club Congress show Is anyone else heading to Tucson for Robyn's solo set at Club Congress tomorrow (or tonight by the time most of you actually will read this)? However even if you book through the Academy's website it directs you to seetickets, so you still have to pay the full whack of #2 booking fee per ticket (which does take you to #18.50 per ticket) then the extortionate 'transaction fee' (seetickets)/postage fee (carling site) of #4.80 (#4.80 for posting two tickets!!) - and you end up paying #41.80 for two tickets instead of #33. I'm sick of being ripped off like this: the only way of avoiding it is to go to the venue itself and pay cash. And then you have to pay #3 a pint (for *Carling*!) in a plastic cup at the venue. Argh.
