The two things I've heard about that: 1) Peter Buck was heard to remark that there were going to be lots of guitars. That's, potentially, a good thing. 2) They'd done some recording with Bill Berry. That is also a good thing. Therefore, I'm cautiously (underline that five times) optimistic. Even though I'm one of those who liked the keyboardy goodness of _Up_ (and the mandolin-y goodness of preceding albums), I think Buck's a much more inventive guitarist than anything else. I'd hope by now that he realizes that using some of the style he developed way back in the dark ages would no longer be "stuck in a rut" - it would be "playing to one's strengths." - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2006 10:50:38 -0800 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: Robyn - January 8th - Norwich On 11/1/06, 2fs wrote: > > > Even though I'm one of those who liked the keyboardy goodness of _Up_ (and > the mandolin-y goodness of preceding albums), I think Buck's a much more > inventive guitarist than anything else. Was there really not that much guitar on "Around the Sun"? Or just not much electric guitar? I don't remember it as particularly keyboard-y, but then again, I don't remember it much at all. R.E.M. firing Stipe and hiring Robyn would be a kind of Van Halen / Sammy Hagar thing, huh? Or more like Audioslave? Basically the kind of thing that only bands I don't like do, but since R.E.M. have drifted into that category, it's an idea. - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Nov 2006 14:04:15 -0500 From: FSThomas Subject: Another Satisfied Customer or a Late October Surprise? http://www.nbc11.com/news/10205869/detail.html *Feds Probe Explosion At eBay Building In San Jose* SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Jose firefighters and a bomb squad remain on the scene of an explosion at the eBay campus on North 1st Street in San Jose. The fire department responded to the four-story building at 2211 North 1st St. at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday after being contacted by the building's private alarm company that some windows were broken, according to San Jose Fire Department Capt. Jose Guerrero. San Jose police told NBC11 that some kind of explosive device was set off in the four-story building, shattering a window. Guerrero told NBC11 News the explosion had to be pretty strong to break the window, because the glass was several inches thick. The nearly 200 employees of eBay's PayPal Division in San Jose are being told to stay home from work Wednesday. NBC11 photographers could not get a picture of the shattered window because it was obscured inside a courtyard and obscured by trees. Chopper11 captured several investigators apparently searching for evidence in the bushes of the courtyard where the explosion happened. Two investigators were seen carrying out shrubbery in a plastic sheet. The 26 people who were in the building at the time of the blast were evacuated. No one was hurt, according to police. People in the buildings across the streets from the eBay complex reported feeling the blast. eBay officials said the operations of PayPal and eBay were not interrupted because of the incident. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Nov 2006 19:13:19 +0000 From: Matthijs van Geldere Subject: Robyn Hitchcock tour dates 2007 - update Dates confirmed so far: 2007 UK Robyn Hitchcock & Venus 3 Tour Monday January 8th: Norwich - http://www.seetickets.com/see/price.asp?code=214292&userid=140668701&filler1 =see Saturday January 13th: Manchester - http://www.seetickets.com/see/price.asp?code=214175&userid=140668191&filler1 =see Sunday January 14th: Sheffield - http://www.frannyman.com/boardwalk/gig_beyond06.html For updates check http://universaltrendsetter.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=1392 [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type application/ms-tnef which had a name of winmail.dat] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2006 11:37:53 -0800 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: Robyn - January 8th - Norwich On Nov 1, 2006, at 10:29 AM, 2fs wrote: > Even though I'm one of those who liked the keyboardy goodness of > _Up_ (and > the mandolin-y goodness of preceding albums), I think Buck's a much > more > inventive guitarist than anything else. I gotta say, listening to the recent LA show, I've got a new appreciation for Buck. He really added some nice touches that I hadn't noticed from other shows. He was playing not more than four feet away from me earlier this year in SF, but perhaps I was too focused on how much he hates me to notice his brilliance. "Luxor" has that feeling for sure, reminding me of "You and Oblivion" more than anything else (with a slightly lower batting average despite being shorter). "Spooked", not so much for me, partly because it has more variety in its arrangements, but mainly because it feels very much like it was all recorded in one (very brief) span of time with a consistent group of collaborators (nothing on it is truly "solo"). So while it's sparse and some of the material is indeed a little recycled (ah, Soft Boys version of "If You Know Time", we never had the chance to really, erm, Know ye), it doesn't feel odds-and-sodsy to my. Just casual and perhaps a little rushed. The late '90's / early '00's albums feel far more patched-together to me, in ways that sometimes worked (Moss Elixir) and sometimes didn't (most of the rest). Was "Luxor" recorded over a long period of time, or was it more like a session or two of recordings of songs that'd accumulated over the years? Can't recall. - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2006 10:15:45 -0800 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Emerging as one of the AMG's most redundant bio-opening paragraphs... ...may I introduce you to Dillard & Clark?
