We have a webcast at http://www.wusb.fm that you can listen to with any media player. Also, this show will be archived for future streaming. The biggest, most exciting thing about this is that we have secured a phone interview with Robyn for 5pm. I can't express how excited I am about that. Or how nervous I am about it. So, if any of you have questions you want to ask Robyn, please forward them to me and I will compile them and ask them for you. And of course, any requests you have will be honored. I'd like to thank those of you who have made parts of my RH collection possible, though I would also like to curse Dime-A-Dozen for never having an open slot for me to sign up for. Yeah, I thought that was rude. Gillian gets a rap (from some people I really respect, even) for being humorless. Personally I kinda warmed to her after hearing that she named her second album "Hell Among the Yearlings" because she wanted it to be called something that made her laugh every time she heard it. Dunno why I found that endearing, but I did. I guess that the people who dislike SPOOKED, including some on the list, really really dislike it. I don't quite get why. I've heard it grouped with LUXOR, but I don't hear much similarity at all. - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2006 19:45:36 -0500 (EST) From: Gary Assassin Subject: Re: DIME: DVD - Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3 - Tokyo Boat Party - Oct 10 2006 Wow, this DVD is amazing! Tarantula' in Australia and New Zealand. Together with Maverick Arts Management they were the driving force behind the recent Robyn Hitchcock & Venus 3 tour of OZ. Here is the director's report : http://www.belmorerecords.com/frameset.html Director's report on one of the best tours ever If you didn't get to catch one of the 8 shows of the Robyn Hitchcock Venus 3 Australian tour, you missed some of the most incredible shows ever. Each gig was an event in itself featuring four extraordinary musicians and performers - and true testimony to their talent was that every show was different and a complete event in itself. Robyn is an extraordinary performer, singer and guitarist, and combined with the Venus 3 this was best run of shows I have seen in a very long time:- Bill Rieflin played drums like no other and the synergy between him and guitarist Peter Buck was inspiring, and Scott McCaughey's bass playing and glorious harmonies were the icing on the proverbial musical cake. When you look at their collective musical pedigrees it is no wonder, with Robyn's great breadth of independent work and the Venus 3's CVs which encompasses REM, Ministry & Minus 5 and of course all of their many side projects, they truly are some of the most inspired and talented musicians. What made it even all the more magical was that they played in small venues giving a musical intimacy second to none. All who attended any of the shows left inspired and a touch gob smacked, and we are delighted that we will be working on bringing them back later next year - if you did miss the shows here is just a little of what the critics have said to date: - - - - - - - - - - Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3: Basement, October 18 Bernard Zuel - Sydney Morning Herald A tall Englishman with elegantly grey hair, a glint in his eye and a shirt of florid fabulousness, Robyn Hitchcock looks nothing less than a younger, healthier Peter Cook. You can imagine Hitchcock as the kind of charming but dotty gentleman squire ("the transparent earl" maybe of his opening song If You Were A Priest) who keeps his muddy wellies and his Turner originals in the same cupboard downstairs. Droll of wit, a lover of the absurd and your ideal playmate for an evening in the sandpit of the English language, Robyn Hitchcock is what you imagine Peter Cook would have been like if he'd chosen rock'n'roll rather than comedy. The better to tell a rambling, increasingly obtuse and hilarious story involving space travel and exploding planets which ends suddenly with "and this song is less than three minutes". While Hitchcock was less garrulous than on his last visit, when he played solo and, according to one fan, "was more like a stand-up comedian", there was still a noticeable strain of wry enjoyment through the nearly 2 hour set - even when excoriating certain Texan presidents or playing songs where fatalism ruled. You get that when the material, the playing and the personalities are of this quality There are tunes galore here, given understated but firmly controlled flair by a trio of REM alumni: guitarist Peter Buck, drummer Bill Rieflin and bassplayer/vocalist Scott McCaughey. Hearing them dance through Hitchcock's Queen Of Eyes was like hearing avowed Hitchcock fans REM doing the Byrds doing Dylan. Indeed Buck's playing would have brought a tear to the eye of every guitar pop nerd who pines for the jangling prettiness of those early REM albums. But the key to Hitchcock is not that his music is deeply rooted in the mid-to-late '60s, infused with that period's melodic drive, but that he finds a way to twist those influences into odd shapes. So the harmonies are tweaked one step further than you might expect, the melodies are pretty but take a left when the natural order of things would be to take a right and, of course the lyrics are always likely to offer moments such as "stop me baby I'm a trolley bus". Mr Cook would have approved. - - - - - - - - - - Robyn Hitchcock Live Review Grand Central: Friday 20 October Patrick Emery - Beat Magazine The light rain on Friday night was welcome, yet ultimately unsatisfying, an acute reminder of the scarcity of rainfall in recent times. The return of Robyn Hitchcock to our fair shores was, in contrast, not only extremely welcome but demonstrably satisfying. Hitchcock is, by his own self-deprecating admission, a cult artist. While cult is frequently a diplomatic euphemism to disguise gratuitous self-indulgence, in Hitchcocks case its perfectly apt. Hitchcock has developed his own cult of admirers and followers while remaining a unique figure in modern music. At Grand Central on Friday night a softly lit venue that clearly hopes to cater for the more mature (in taste, not age) punter Hitchcock, in concert with the Venus Three, demonstrated just why his cult remains so strong. Hitchcock is every inch the showman. With his lengthy monologues an amalgam of Peter Ustinov, Warren Ellis and Peter Cook Hitchcock comes across as something of a psychedelic minstrel, the charisma and artistic talent of Syd Barrett without the mind-frying consumption of multi-coloured acid. Oli Tarantula was preceded with a bizarre anecdote involving failed attempts to telephone the Pope, the crowd transfixed by Hitchcocks rambling narrative and casual segue (against all the odds) into the song itself. On Briggs (A Mans Got to Know His Limitations) Hitchcock gives an accurate precis of the script of Clint Eastwoods second outing as Dirty Harry in Magnum Force, before concluding with Eastwoods classic catch-phrase. The Venus Three three fifths of the Hitchcock loving Minus Five support Hitchcock without detracting attention. The majority of people who wear sunglasses on stage unfortunately find themselves with dickhead tattooed on their foreheard; Scott McCaughey is one of the few exceptions proving the rule. On guitar Peter Buck is infinitely more impressive than when flanked by the pretentious bald guy; Buck stares at Hitchcock with a demeanour that suggests ongoing admiration at Hitchcocks talents. Bill Rieflin doesnt miss a trick on drums (and resists any temptation to re-live his more frenetic drumming days in Ministry). Im no Robyn Hitchcock tragic, and cant begin to reel off the titles of the songs Hitchcock included in the set-list. Apart from the material drawn from the recent Oli Tarantula album, McCaughey takes guitar and vocal duties to lead the band through a Minus Five track followed shortly after by a tribute to the Byrds pop rock brilliance. The band is called back for a second encore (failure to return may well have caused the audience to shed its mature sensibilities and engage in riotous behaviour) and the show is over. Robyn Hitchcock is certainly a cult artist; the audience departed Friday night, dominated by a belief that, like the 19th century cargo cults of the Pacific region, Hitchcock will one day receive the popular and commercial acclaim he deserves. - - - - - - - - - - Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 live at the Clarendon, Katoomba: 19 October Inkster - Stix Magazine Almost every review of Robyn Hitchcock mentions the same word in the first sentence. Eccentric! At least, Ive managed to postpone it to the second sentence, if only to be different and try to refute this description! Eccentric is what the mainstream calls something it doesnt quite understand or appreciate. The word might spark an interest in the curious, but for most it marginalises the artist. I want to make a case that Robyn Hitchcock is one of the most important musicians of the last thirty years and that his body of work deserves to be enjoyed and taken seriously in the same light as the best of the indie music scene. Anyone present at the Clarendon on Thursday night will go away with a fond recollection of Robyns sense of humour. His between song banter is legendary. He seems to paddle so far up some stream of consciousness that even the rest of the band stand by bemused, not knowing where he is going or whether he will lose his way. Invariably, he links the topic back to the song and everybody lets out a sigh of relief that he has returned safely to shore. Robyns comic talent comes from the same source as other English satirists like Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Graham Chapman and, more recently, Sacha Baron Cohen. He is one of the wittiest musicians in rock, but he is also one of the most intelligent. He uses verbal precision to dissect everyday life, whether he is delighting in the absurd or defining the nuances of real, mature (not puppy) love. In his own words, he is also a charming and dangerous guy. Just as he can place the world of conformity under a microscope, he points the way to an alternative of cultural sophistication, off-beat humour, personal self-sufficiency and a community of like minds. He is flirtatious and flippant as hell. But he is also informed and opinionated and sceptical of authority. Ultimately, he is a threat to the ordinary world of George Bush, Tony Blair and John Howard, because he is both seductive and subversive. Robyn has previously toured Australia solo and acoustic. This tour was 100% electric and highlighted what an exceptional guitarist he is. The Venus 3 are effectively the touring version of REM. Omit Michael Stipe and substitute Robyn Hitchcock and you have some idea of the pedigree of this band. Peter Buck obviously enjoyed the chance to craft an exhilarating jangle pop sound with someone who shares a passion for Dylan and the Beatles and the Byrds. At an earlier gig, he revealed that the next REM album will feature guitars more heavily, which is something to get excited about. Bill Rieflin constructed some fascinating rhythms that continually attracted your attention, even when the guitarists were in full flight. Scott McCaugheys bass was equally solid. He is a leader when the band plays in the guise of the Minus 5. However, behind that beard, he impressed me as a really happy, smiling foil to Robyn. If the Venus 3 came across as grinning souls who shared our affection for their singer, then Robyn convinced many of us that he is both a secular messiah and a very naughty boy. - ----- End forwarded message ----- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2006 08:23:24 -0600 From: "Brian Huddell" Subject: RE: DIME: DVD - Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3 - Tokyo Boat Party - Oct 10 2006 > I can burn copies for folks as an interim measure - let me know if > anyone wants this. Just wondering how long the tour's going to be, roughly. If there's potentially another US swing with the V3, I'll make damned sure not to double book that date.
