Tarantula cd review in Melbourne's Beat Ole! Tarantula cd review in Melbourne's Beat by PATRICK EMERY : http://www.beat.com.au/review.php?id=370 Robyn Hitchcock And The Venus 3 Ole Tarantula (Yep Rock) As much as pop music is dominated by the obsessions and style of the youth of today there is something attractive about witnessing a mature performer practice the skill of popular song. Like an old guy clad in weather beaten flannels and terry towelling hat and a brandishing a 1970s Stuart Surridge bat dispatching a barrage of over-enthusiastic young fast bowlers in a game of turf cricket, song-writers whove been around the traps can create great pop songs with a degree of confidence that only comes with experience (unless of course theyve devolved into boring old farts bemoaning every artistic development since Dylan went electric). Robyn Hitchcock has been around the block a few times in his career, initially with his band The Soft Boys, then with his backing band The Egyptians, and as a solo performer (with some celluloid exposure along the way). Despite having a discography that borders on the copious, Hitchcock falls into the category of cult artist where cult is a polite euphemism that disguises a lack of commercial and popular success. But no ones ever claimed pop music was a just pursuit. Oli Tarantula sees Hitchcock teaming up with the Venus 3 a casual band of supporting artists including Peter Buck and Bill Rieflin from REM (REM being one of the first bands to pay tribute to the Soft Boys influence) and Scott McCaughey from Rieflins other band The Minus Five. This is pop music written and performed by a master of the craft. Adventure Rocket Ship is melodic 60s inspired pop as fresh as Syd Barretts fertile imagination before it was fried into submission, Belltown Ramble provides a stable bridge between folk and pop and Oli Tarantula is a wistful and satisfying stroll across the most inspiring of musical plains. Hitchcocks love of late era Beatles is there for all to hear in Cause Its Love (Saint Parallelogram) and The Authority Box while NY Doll pays tribute to the late Arthur Kane. But to understand why Robyn Hitchcock is as relevant today as he ever was, just hear the horn-fuelled reprise in Museum of Sex, sparked by Hitchcocks adolescent call of lets hear that riff again. Its a riff well worth hearing again and Oli Tarantula shows Hitchcocks got plenty more to give the world. Well, most of Robyn's storyboards bit the dust, BUT the band shots are exactly as sketched at the museum, including the musical saw player (who is that chick? Michele? And is that Rieflin doing the tambourine between Robyn and Peter)? It looks like he might even have sketched the shots seen here after the fact. Of course, at YouTube resolution, for all I know, someon's playing a land breem in there... It also pops up with an old Late Night with Letterman appearance, "So You Think You're in Love", with a weird configuration of the Egyptians, where Robyn holds but doesn't play a guitar, Andy *does* play one, and seemingly the Letterman band plays everything else. Missed that the first time around! - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2006 13:05:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Robyn and Andy News (no Metcalfe) Popmatters.com has posted a big multi-part interview/story/popcast on Andy Partridge: http://www.popmatters.com/pm/features/article/6925/the-man-who-sailed-around-his-soul/ Which includes this passage about Robyn: > Most recently, Partridge worked on a song > collaboration for Robyn Hitchcocks new album Oli! > Tarantula, a pairing that seemed particularly > fruitful and was unfortunately cut short by a sound > engineers studio mistake that left Partridge > battling a severe case of tinnitus. > > Partridge reports that Hitchcock sent him word > that when he comes off tour, hed very much like > to get back with me and carry on writing. An Andy Partridge solo album wouldn't be a bad thing. Colin's songs on the last two were from pretty deep in the vault, I think, although his and Dave's musical input would always be a plus factor. I wonder how a Robyn and Andy album might turn out. - - Steve ______________________________ The 5 stages of Republican scandal: 1. I got it on cassette and transferred it myself from a Nakamichi MR-2 to a Tascam CDRW-700 standalone recorder. No artwork. Runs 57:43. I am missing a couple bits of information, so if someone out there knows them let me know. I do not know the name of the first track. I also do not know the venue, altho she says Chicago several times during the show. The date is also simply the date it had when I got it. I can't confirm. Track Listing: ?
