In my efforts to keep my finger on the very pulse of all the latest Hitchcock doings, I heard his new album "Spooked" this morning. I can't recall whether this is one of the discs which Eddie heaps abuse on, but mmm...yeah, I'm not too fond of it. Hearing this billed as his "Americana" album, I wanted to hear some more grime and dust...or more specifically, more of a blues element. Instead, it was still mostly in his major-pentatonic UK-folk mode, and with too many tracks sounding like electric pop songs recorded minimally, rather than songs written in a truly acoustic mindset. Also...too many lazy tunes like "Television" (great lyric, though), "If You Know Time" and "Sometimes a Blonde" which repetitively milk a single melody line or chord progression. I suppose my favorite tracks were "Everybody Needs Love" (yes, obviously a stripped-down pop single), "Creeped Out" (gosh...is this Robyn's first reference to menstruation?) and "We're Gonna Live in the Trees." The album may be greenish, but it's no "I Often Dream of Trains." Or even a "Moss Elixir." What's with that weird glitch/fragment at the beginning of "English Girl"? It's unpleasant, rather than endearing. Random note: The Gracenote database which feeds iTunes thinks the third track is called "Everybody Needs You." Speaking of surreal Americana, I heard 13th Floor Elevators albums for the first time in recent days, and they're pretty damn good. I'm woefully tardy on this discovery -- I think I was unfairly prejudiced, due to never being that fond of Roky's solo stuff. Just because it was recorded with Gillian & Dave, that doesn't mean it had to be "Americana" (I acknowledge and agree with your scare quotes). I think that "billing" came entirely from lazy journalists (who assume musicians can do only one thing...even though G&D are on record as being into a wide range of different musical styles). Anyway: I wanted to hear some more grime and dust...or > more specifically, more of a blues element. Eh. The blues is boring. Me, I'm thankful about that: he'd done two or three consecutive albums "written in a truly acoustic mindset" (or at least, recorded that way: "Dylan Sings") and I was getting tired of it. Robyn's a wonderful acoustic guitar player...but it's still just the one, same instrumental color. Also...too many lazy tunes > like "Television" (great lyric, though), "If You Know Time" and > "Sometimes a Blonde" which repetitively milk a single melody line or > chord progression. In the first two cases, I find that repetition hypnotic rather than lazy or tiring. Oh well: chase the son with gout, or whatever the French say. > Random note: The Gracenote database which feeds iTunes thinks the > third track is called "Everybody Needs You." That is one thing I really hate about collectively submitted databases: errors perpetuate nastily. A friend of mine released an album a couple of years ago - and one track from that album showed up on several mixes (a couple made by people who don't know him personally), and one song always showed up with the same wrong title. (See also: the Wrens song that does not exist, "Everyone Chooses Sides.") I wish there were some sort of review board or something at those databases where erroneous listings could be found wanting and deleted. What I really don't get are the people who go through the trouble to type in the entry for a CD...and then don't bother to proofread. Okay, I can see this point of view. The problem is that Eb's onlist and offlist personalities have come to seem completely inseparable for a bunch of reasons, none pleasant. We all know-- I think even Eb knows, since his behavior has been pointed out to him many times and he refuses to change it-- that Eb is an asshole. And a lot of us have discovered, because he doesn't especially cover his tracks well, and burns bridges with the people he offends and leaves them rather eager to share, that he's got bigger problems than that. Here's something that Quail, Eb's staunchest advocate, said to me offlist... I wouldn't do this if not for what an ass Quail had been about offlist conversations with me: "And I know that Eb has some issues with women. He is unsocialized in some ways, and has trouble approaching women without seeming off-putting. I've heard that, too, and I have experienced it." Well, women being half of the population, that doesn't bespeak the healthiest of personalities, but it gets ickier. Just ask around. It seems like half of everyone here has a story, and so do people far and wide. He's obsessive, bitter, and certainly has stalker-like tendencies in real life; I'm sort of puzzled as to why this open secret is tolerated here, or even seemingly protected. I can understand it being over that line into irrelevant, real-life, offlist behavior, and I'd probably be content to leave it there if Eb were just surly and sad, instead of personally vindictive. For one thing, as much as he tries to act blase about it onlist, Eb spends a lot of time hating on me (seriously, you were *happy* to see *anyone* go through a divorce? You who had the balls to call me out for not posting anything when one of your relatives died?). For another, he spends a lot of time behaving pathetically towards women. So I jumped back at Eb when he mentioned my kids because I *do* know that his is an obsessive creep. That was wrong. I shoulda kill-filed him long ago or just plain stopped responding to his provocation. You'll notice that I haven't felt threatened by anyone else mentioning my kids, even Quail, who hates me at least as badly as Eb; the difference is that I think Quail is just a jerk, not a... whatever kind of being Eb is. Doesn't help that Eb is uncomfortably geographically close to me. But the bottom line is that it was a visceral reaction-- it made me feel queasy to see him mention them. Period. So when Eb and Quail jumped down my throat saying, "Hah, it's not like Eb is some kind of obsessive creep", my reaction was to say, um, yeah, he is. Because he is. The most economical way to say this seemed to be to refer to something I was told quite some time ago about a restraining order against him. I remain pretty surprised that Eb denies this, because I had no reason to doubt it when I was told it, since it came along with other details that've been repeated to me several times, independently, about Eb's MO, and it never occurred to me to doubt it. Unquestionably some of the other stories I've been told about Eb include actions that would warrant such an action. Have I seen a restraining order against Eb? No. Did I want to be talking about any of this? No. Does Eb piss me off to the point where I make unwise decisions? You bet. So I've taken steps to deal with that. Now, before Quail gets all high and mighty, let's look at this: After that, Rex reacts hysterically, and begins making unfounded > accusations, the worst of which is "Eb's had a restraining order placed > against him." Another person makes a post in which he seems to think that > Eb > has "threatened" his children, which only shows the power of such > underhanded tactics. Quail... the reason it shows the "power" is that the "another person", as I thought everyone pretty much assumed as I did, was (The Great) Dane, who is you. Not your subtest list-manipulation false identity, but jeez, you're known for this stuff.. So let's hear no more about "underhanded tactics", and you can stop with the hypocritical accusations of hypocrisy and lying, Mr. Garsh Folks I Shore Didn't Mean To Post That To the List. And for god's sake, please can it with the political comparisons where I'm concerned. Your obsession with political punditry is your own cross to bear and has nothing to do with me. This is a personal thing here, not a political struggle. I know, supposedly everything is political. Except sometimes it's not. Crypto-fascist? Yeesh. In conclusion, as has been suggested to me, I apologize to the asshole who is Eb. - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2006 22:38:33 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: ain't that a shame? And amazing that I would have the nerve to deny it, considering all the evidence which Rex has given. Oh wait...sorry. There wasn't any, was there? I still can't figure out if he's so loony with rage that he feels justified in posting poisonous lies about me, or if he's so loony that he's actually retooling reality to suit his own emotional needs. In any case, it's very clear that his instability has everything to do with his apparently venomous battles with his ex-wife, and very little to do with me. > In conclusion, as has been suggested to me, I apologize to the > asshole who > is Eb. Oh yes, now that was grown-up. And of course, it's a totally worthless apology even without the "asshole" swipe, because he's still playing the "restraining order" card in this post as well.
