Thing is, I'm pretty sure Cage's conception with 4'33" wasn't *just* silence (nor was it just the performative aspect of the piano player sitting down at the keyboard, etc.): it was also that, once the expectation of "performance" had been established, and the audience quieted itself (except, of course, for the ever-present coughers, candy-unwrappers, and seat-shifter-inners), whatever ambient noise was in the air *would* be the performance. So "traffic, seagulls, crows" etc. feature in the performance you experience of 4'33". And: > A recording that could actually nullify background noise would be a valuable > thing, whatever positive noise it might contain. Well, there are headphones that claim to do such a thing: essentially, they have a mic and circuitry that (a) analyzes incoming sound very rapidly and (b) feeds into the phones the same sounds but at 180-degrees out of phase to cancel the sound out. This works only insofar as the analysis is accurate and the inevitable delay between reception and the out-of-phase signal is as short as possible. In principle, if you knew *exactly* what noises were coming, and you could take the identical sound and shift it 180 out of phase, you'd have silence. (You can certainly do this with digital recordings: most of them have a feature allowing you to reverse the phase: if you copy the signal, put it in another window, reverse the phase, copy that, then paste that on top of the original, what's left is nothing: silence.) I'm working on a version that anticipates the most obnoxious posts to the feglist and then reverses them out of phase and posts the reverse-phase version on top of the obnoxious posts, thereby cancelling them out. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2006 01:10:29 -0400 From: "ken ostrander" Subject: ain't that a shame? >>>... isn't the song basically saying "We don't love each other any more, but when I'm within your sticky genitalia I don't care"?<<< it's a bit confusing. with so much bitterness and distrust it seems like the only sticky genitalia might be his own. the whole bit with the chisel reminds me of 'basic instinct'. if he spends most of his time in bushes watching and shaking like humbert in anticipation of their meeting, then how can we expect that he's going to get some, except by force? when he says "i'm not the kind to push you around; but i don't want to make myself vulnerable", it's suggestive of violence and fear as well as ambivalence (flowers and nails are the two extremes). it's also possible (albeit even more confusing) that "my baby" and the "you" in the song are not the same person. there might be a new potential baby (who understands how everything sometimes turns out to be nothing) to whom he's telling all this and who might have a lickable elixir to soothe the ache. http://www.allwords.com/word-linctus.html << i always assumed it was "*kneads* your meat". don't recall our having discussed this in the lyrics group...>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> they both work. your version is much more visual. >>Can we please ban squidgy case-shifting games?<<<<<< right after torture. by the way, my (much maligned) lack of captialization is my way levelling the playing field of words. why should some words be conferred with such glory while all others must sit back and suck it up? i prefer the delicate humility of the lower case. >>> Aren't we all in fact arguably listening [4' 33"] 24 hours a day anyway? * Not here in the noisy city outskirts we aren't. Ken writes, > i'm guessing that most people believed them; which should > tell you something. See? That's what's the most insidious thing of all. This is the very reason I think Rex has sunk to Bill O'Reilly/Karl Rove/Richard Nixon level. All he has to do is make up a few lies, and he's introduced *doubt.* It's disgusting, low, and simply ugly. In fact, I think it's one of the most disturbing things to have happened onlist in a long time. And then you start in with this? "which should tell you something?" That's not very attractive either. To clarify. Eb made *one* comment in which he compared the emotional maturity of Rex's subject line to that of his kids. Kids, mind you, that Rex occasionally discusses, so it's not like Eb has stalked Rex to find out. After that, Rex reacts hysterically, and begins making unfounded accusations, the worst of which is "Eb's had a restraining order placed against him." Another person makes a post in which he seems to think that Eb has "threatened" his children, which only shows the power of such underhanded tactics. Now, I do not think Eb should have made his initial comment, because it's never a prudent thing to mention a rival's children, especially given Rex's history of hysterics. But that does not mean Eb is a stalker, or that he is dangerous, or that he is a threat to someone's kids. And then to make unfounded accusations like Eb's had a restraining order? That's just inexcusable. What surprises me, frankly, is that only a scant few people have publicly supported Eb on this one, when Rex is so *clearly* in the wrong. In charitable moments, I like to think that most people who have even followed the argument are embarrassed and appalled and just want it to go away. In less charitable moments, I just think it's because there's a whole lot of hypocrites on the List who simply don't play fair, and are happy to see points scored against someone they don't like no matter who sleazy the method. The whole thing has me thoroughly disgusted. I think Rex owes Eb an apology, but of course, that will never happen, because Eb is usually perceived as being "the bad guy." So, by your own implication quoted above, I guess because some people find him nasty or even creepy, he deserves the aura of having done something illegal. Bullshit. You must defend people's rights even when you don't like them. - --Quail ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2006 17:17:13 +0200 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Re: ain't that a shame? - -- The Great Quail is rumored to have mumbled on 14. No no...ORDERS, not order. Plural. Not even just one. Rex has lost his marbles. He's not rational anymore, and his earlier snitty, unrepentant post continues to illustrate this. I would hope people will realize that talk of "restraining orders" is coming from the same maniac who also accused me of threatening his kids because I called him immature, and conclude that both accusations are equally credible, but...you never know. Also, it kind of got lost in the usual Broome fireworks. But after a moment's reflection it's pretty clear that this crossed a line, and kind of a scary one. I don't enjoy piling on Rex. I like his posts (and his music). And I've done some crummy stuff in anger myself so I'm in no position to scold. We just need to remember that anyone can say *anything* about someone else, including *you*. When it concerns someone's off-list life in the real world it's irrelevant to the list. Accusations of creepy or criminal real-world activities are both irrelevant to the list and extremely destructive. Quail is right.
