Tarantula Label: Proper Robyn Hitchcock sounds more than ever like his hero Syd Barrett on this latest album, recorded in Seattle with his chums Peter Buck and the R.E.M. auxiliary of bassist Scott McCaughey and drummer Bill Rieflin. Indeed, the opening psych-rock wig-out "Adventure Rocket Ship" sounds like the Floyd might have if Syd had written the space-rock songs rather than Roger Waters. The rising melodic hook of "Red Locust Frenzy" recalls Tim Buckley; and the warm horns on "Museum Of Sex" have an engaging Memphis soul character - all of which illustrates the problem Hitchcock has in transcending his influences. But there is recompense here in the poppy, epiphanic "'Cause It's Love (Saint Parallelogram)", which may yet furnish him with the hit he deserves. 3/5 stars ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2006 09:26:13 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: Fairport Convention -- "Meet On The Ledge" On 9/28/06, Stewart C. If a band is more popular, promoters and venue operators are going to try to charge more. Given that bands who play shows for $6 can barely afford ramen noodles (especially when there are five, six people in the band), I'd think you'd be happy they're approximately making a living. Of course, that assumes the money is going to the band - and not to Ticketbastard, etc. I just hate it when people reflexively blame the band for higher ticket prices - when really, they're low in the food chain. If bands set prices, they'd charge higher ones early on (enough so they could make a living). U2 could afford to play anywhere in the world for free from now on, probably...your local bar band can't. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2006 10:02:39 -0400 From: The Great Quail Subject: Re: Fairport Convention -- "Meet On The Ledge" > They've gone awfully corporate. Come on, you can easily drop $25 on dinner and a movie. Why is everyone so willing to cry "sell out" the second a band actually starts becoming self sufficient? I mean, sure a lot of the money goes to other sources, especially when a band gets big enough to necessitate playing a larger venue. Another reason to despise them besides their music. Striesand had to cancel her concert at The Palace of Auburn Hills due to low ticket sales response. That's a totally viable modern approach, just a little too modern for me. Actually, I feel relatively fine about doing that kind of thing for records by artists I haven't gotten off the fence on yet, or ones that I long ago decided were only good for a song here or there, but for they musicians I really follow, I'm not much for on-the-fly resequencing. Maybe I should be. On the same tip, just now listening to Obliteration Pie for the first time. One of the odder odds 'n' sods comps Robyn has put out. It looks like the most informative text in the booklet, presumably session notes under the headings "Tuscon in 2003", "Seattle in 2002", etc, are almost entirely in Japanese. The little Japanese-language spine-condom thing features English text in the form of the words "Oak Tree Records" and the letters "R.E.M.". I might just now be coming to the good part of the record: Robyn and Kimberly tearing up "Funkytown". Some other good stuff, but fairly perplexing. I guess that the font that debuted with Spooked is now the "official" RH font, replacing his handwriting... it's on OP and OT as well. And in any and all RH art design, green is the new green.
