Neko and the New Pornographers were great, as usual. They mentioned that they were close to having a new album ready. I was glad to see Willie for the first time, but I heard people say later that it wasn't one of his better shows, a bit unfocused-- I guess after his adventure this morning, it's not too hard to figure out why. The Raconteurs put on an absolutely knock-out set. Some of the other best sets of the weekend were Sparklehorse, the Flaming Lips, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Calexico, the Secret Machines, and what I saw of the Long Winters. One thing also worth pointing out happened during Ben Kweller's set. He came on about 10 minutes late and explained that the paramedics had been helping stop a major nose bleed he had from both nostrils. He made it through a song or two before the problem really got going again. He tried to clean up a bit with those white towels bands use to wipe sweat off, and it was clear he was bleeding quite a lot. He started another song and soon afterward stopped, saying "I'm not sure if I can go on..." I yelled out, "Get a nostril tampon, dude!" I really don't think he heard me, but about half a minute later, he asked, "Does anyone have a tampon?" Over a dozen of the things, of various types and sizes, were soon thrown up onto the stage. He picked up a few and settled for one a bit more compact looking to unwrap and stick up his nose. The band actually played another song before he pulled the tampon out of his nose again saying it had expanded too much. At this point he had bled all over himself, his guitar, and even his bandmates, and decided to cut things short. A really memorable set overall. (see photo and write-up) http://blogcritics.org/archives/2006/09/17/093929.php The next day, Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips did his usual bit with pouring some fake blood across his head and face during their set, but pointed out that he wasn't copying Ben Kweller, which was probably actually much cooler for being real blood. Still, he encouraged girls to throw tampons up on stage, too, "but not used ones." Tom C. would have also enjoyed the girl near me who took off her top, trying to get the camera to show her on the viewing screen by the stage, during a rain delay in the middle of Tom Petty's set. She made a worthy effort, for the better part of 10 minutes, but failed to get her get her 10 seconds of big screen fame. Pity. Overall, a great time, despite the drenching, and having to get up at 2:15 a.m. Arizona time to catch a plane home and go directly to work once I got back. I really should get to bed now so I can go to court in the morning (for work). Hope I'll still be awake tomorrow night when I go to see the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Marc btw--For what it's worth at this point--The Man-Machine is just about my favorite Kraftwerk album, but I prefer the German (Die Mensch-Maschine) language version by quite a bit over the English one. The song Die Roboter (the Robots) really does not work in English--"Wir sind die Roboter" sounds great repeated in the refrain, where "We are the robots" comes up a syllable short and doesn't flow at all. I think Love Tractor did a decent cover of Neon Lights but really didn't care for the one Luna did. Kraftwerk also put out a fairly hard to find luminous vinyl 12" of Neon Lights in the UK. It looked great, glowing in the dark, but sounded like shit, because the vinyl didn't seem to be of recording quality. Snakefinger did a nice job of covering The Model, in his own weird way. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2006 13:22:10 +0200 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Re: Austin City Limits - --On 19. I've always put some of Kraftwerks' wonkier lyrical moments down to translation. I tried that...the "Get Album Artwork" thing only netted me between 60 and 70 covers, and a few of them were wrong (two related to Bob Dylan, one related to the Stereolab-related group Turn On....). Though I don't have nearly as many mp3s saved as most people, because I'm not an iPodder. This whole gimmick seems pretty buggy at this point. You should be add the artwork for just one album, and not the whole she-bang. And you'll try to delete artwork and it doesn't take. There's also a screensaver capability where you can make your saved iTunes artwork be your screensaver, and it didn't seem to recognize the new artwork for me. Also...I looked in the folder which stores the album art. Files were as small as 16K and as large as *792K*. What's up with that? A three- inch square sleeve photo should not use that much space. If you display the cover in the left bottom corner and click on it, it will open full-size in a new window. Sometimes these covers are *huge*. It's like the old vinyl days ;-) Talking about that, I've had sort of a crush on a girl that's 23 years old, but mainly listens to 70s punk. One of her favorite record is Pink Flag, for example.
