His first #1 album in 30 years! I was excited to see a long-chased film last night: "Girl on a Motorcycle," starring the 1968-vintage Marianne Faithfull. Wasn't more than an "OK" film, but Faithfull was just stunningly sexy. Yowsa. Hard to connect the dots between that Teutonic goddess and her ragged persona only 10 years later. Not much of a plot and there were a few awful rear-projection scenes, but it was interesting to speculate what influence this film could have had on "Easy Rider" (which came out a year later). Also, the film opened with a wonderful period "dream sequence," including some kinky S&M overtones. Surprisingly, Faithfull did not sing at all, either in the film or even on the soundtrack. Some researcher found some weird, dessicated, tattered critter on a farmer's wall... looked like a bat-squid hybrid (it'd been nibbled on by his cat). The farmer said he'd found it in the woods. The local paper published a photo on the front page with all kinds of speculation on what the hell it was (most folks figured alien creature, but one neighbor of the farmer was quoted as believing that it was "the beast"). The town was abuzz about it for a few weeks until some kids showed up at the paper's office with a complete specimen, shrinkwrapped no less. It was a guitarfish; apparently they sell dessicated ones as souvenirs at beaches in the south, like pufferfish and such (this one came from Myrtle Beach, SC). Couldn't find any references to it among all the dicey cryptozoology the internets have to offer, so I guess this little myth was debunked to quickly to have had much afterlife. The moral is, rotted-up shit looks a lot different for what it was when it was alive. - -Spotted Eagle Ray, not responsible for Steve Irwin's untimely passing ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2006 11:09:10 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Cracker No-Soul What the hell has happened to David Lowery? I recently downloaded the latest Cracker album "Greenland" and it's just as boring as the last couple releases. Where are the guitars? Where's Johnny Hickman? It seems all Lowery can write these days are these stream of consciousness narratives that go nowhere. Ugh. Conversely, Paul Weller's double-live "Catch-Flame! Live at The Alexandra Palace" rocks hard. Nice to see he's still going strong. - -tc ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2006 12:18:58 -0700 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: Cracker No-Soul On 9/7/06, Tom Clark wrote: > > What the hell has happened to David Lowery? I thought the Camper Van Beethoven reunion record was pretty strong, but I haven't bought the last... I dunno how many Cracker records. I remember recently seeing that there were more of 'em than I knew, including dueling hits packages (the label's and the band's version, which, being re-recorded, are arguably less authentic). All of which is weird because the last thing I bought by them was... a hits compilations (Garage D'Or). - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2006 15:11:22 -0700 (PDT) From: JBJ Subject: I Wish I Was Doing This http://www.pressconnects.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060831/ENT/608310312/1017 could this be Robyn's most directly political song?? =jbj= ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V15 #207 ********************************
