[2fs ] State of the Ebert [Jeff Dwarf ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2006 00:28:53 -0700 From: "Marc Holden" Subject: the Devil & Daniel Johnston I got off work a bit early tonight so I could see the Daniel Johnston documentary. I'm not sure how strongly to recommend this one, because Daniel's music is not something really easy for a lot of people to embrace, but man, this one is just amazing in many ways. Probably the best movie of this sort since the Robert Crumb movie. There is a lot of early film of important events in his life (some are very poor quality, but they add to the overall telling of Johnston's life story). It seems to have had input from all the major people in his life, except the girl he obsessed over, Laura Allen, and it didn't mention his friendship with Roky Erickson. There are some disturbingly fucked up situations that Daniel got involved in, and the movie does a good job of handling everything in what seems to be an honest and open manner. See the film if you get the chance. It's really nicely put together, and I'd be willing to say it is my favorite movie I've seen so far this year. Later, Marc "I read somewhere that 77 per cent of all the mentally ill live in poverty. Actually, I'm more intrigued by the 23 per cent who are apparently doing quite well for themselves." I turned up at work today with two Mission of Burma records and my entire Joni collection. "Hissing" is next up. - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2006 15:35:08 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: current flamewar On 8/18/06, Eb wrote: > > Am I gonna have to step in and separate you two? Okay, either this is funny because the list's been as quiet as a dead mouse in the middle of Wyoming - or it's not funny at all, and I've somehow not been getting any list mail for like three-four days. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2006 17:16:28 -0500 From: "Brian Huddell" Subject: RE: current flamewar > Am I gonna have to step in and separate you two? Amen. I joined this list to discuss the work of a certain English musician, NOT to read a bunch of political ranting. I know the sleeve photoes on Electrafixion's "Zephyr" EP and the first, self-titled Fountains of Wayne album have been used by others, but I'm not sure by whom, I just remember seeing them in the 10/$5 bins at Amoeba, Rasputin, or Streetlight. > Luna > > > > Dylan > > .
