Barbara Soutar Victoria, BC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2006 20:54:56 -0400 From: Barbara Soutar Subject: Getting caught up I wasn't getting the feglist for a few weeks, and wondered why. When I got back from a road trip this week, all of a sudden there were 45 e-mails, among them about 8 feglists. What happened I'll never know. But it's fun to catch up and see the gang being themselves again. Stuart and his fishtank, Eb and his good natured reaction to being accused of cannibalism, reaps and so on. Just before my fegland membership was apparently cancelled I had posted that I saw Dr. John in concert and enjoyed it. Mike Godwin's recent reference to Dr. John the Night Tripper indicated to me that my message got posted, or was that coincidental? Anyway, last week we stayed on Malcolm Island just off the northern tip of Vancouver Island. Turns out that it''s not only a stunning bit of British Columbia wilderness but the site of an early utopian community made up of Finnish immigrants to Canada. In 1901 they decided to create a settlement where they could work at something other than coal mining, which is about all that was on offer at the time. They rejected Christianity, accepted the idea of the equality of the sexes, tentatively agreed that free love might not be such a bad idea, insisted on frequent saunas and tried to survive the damp winter by living in large tents. They tried logging the island but lumber was cheap in those days and they were so inexperienced that they made no profit despite working long hours. It was a bit of a disaster, and the utopia only lasted for 4 years. Strangely enough, Finnish people still visit Malcolm Island because of the history. We hiked to a magnificent bog there, where we spent some magical hours with the help of some mushrooms. Must remember to do that once a decade at least. I am in love with the Thom Yorke solo album, The Eraser. Didn't think much of him before, wasn't a fan. But this I can listen to over and over. Anyone else have a reaction? Me, not so much. Granted, I've only made it through once and it might be one of those albums that grows on me, but my first reaction was a very deep, long yawn. I remember having to wait 3 months for Respect to be released in the UK and Queen Elvis was only available on import so getting the the new album 1 day ahead of the USA is no consolation! As a reminder, here's the line-up: (The German version has a few more acts plus the timetable) It was my first time at a festival that stretched more than one day, with camping in tents etc ... For me it was a mixed bag. The sense of community was great (we were nine people in our group and had barbecues and breakfasts together), but I could do without sleeping in a tent :-) The music was so-so, but I saw barely half of the shows, because it was just too much for me. I *did* see and enjoy Martha Wainwright, The Wrens and Ed Harcourt. I bought everything The Wrens were selling after the show (i.e. CD-Rs of their recordings), but haven't yet really listened to them. There are setlists and recordings of some of the shows here: I really like the recording of The Wrens, even though it's atypical for what they played. They said onstage that they were never going to be rock stars and they didn't give a shit about that, but today they felt like rock stars because they were playing in front of thousands of people and that it was the highlight of their year. The bass player acted as though he had taken too much cocaine. I think that under different circumstances I would've been irritated by his posing and jumping around, but for some reason it didn't feel like a typical macho routine. I don't know. I think I was definitely prepared to like them because of the positive comments I'd read about them here. Ed Harcourt (kudos to Mike Godwin for recommending him) was great live, but the first CD (I don't yet have the new one) isn't doing much for me. Maybe it'll grow on me. - -- Sebastian Hagedorn http://www.spinfo.uni-koeln.de/~hgd/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2006 09:11:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: Getting caught up "Stewart C. I don't know how close you were to the band - but when I saw them a year or so ago in a small club in Minneapolis, Kevin (the bass player) was leaping around as you describe - and it wasn't posing (and I don't think it was too much cocaine!), it was just sheer enthusiasm! That's probably why it "didn't feel like a typical macho routine" to you - even at (I'm guessing) a further distance than the ten or fifteen feet I was from the stage when I saw them then - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2006 23:13:35 -0400 From: "ken ostrander" Subject: RE: belated, nonmusical reap >I don't think anyone here mentioned the July 30 death of Murray Bookchin, >the anarchist/libertarian socialist and deep ecologist, at age 85. sounds like my kinda guy. in a similar vein, i didn't see any mention of the end of fidel alejandro castro ruz' 47 year stretch in power. i know, not dead yet; but he's gettin' there. ken "one of my deepest concerns today is that the libertarian socialist core will be eroded by fashionable, post- modernist, spiritualist, mystic individualism" the kenster np 'spooked' - my first real listen having finally downloaded it off emusic. when i first sampled it in a hipster emporium in orlando i was disappointed and, consequently, could not bring myself to shell out the money for it. i'm liking it now. i guess i'm in a different place or mood or state. i guess i'm just another fickle consumer. just reading about 'ole tarantula' has gotten me all excited. the drugs have taken themselves. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2006 00:11:26 -0400 From: "Lauren Elizabeth (gmail)" Subject: I'm easily impressed... ...or this is just way way cool: http://www.grand-illusions.com/opticalillusions/dragon_illusion/ Click on the "video" link. Quail, Vivien, Chris Gross, LJ, and I were at the Guggenheim in New York City viewing a pretty amazing surrealist exhibit (including quite a few DeChiricos). In the lobby, there was a painting of a room with many hallways leading off and on the walls of each hall and through the doorways at the ends of those halls one could see famous surrealist paintings hanging. As one walked around and viewed the painting from different angles, the painting appeared to move so that your perspective on each hallway was as though you were standing on the opposite side from where you were. On close inspection (which involved leaning precariously over a velvet rope), the painting turned out, in fact, to be a kind of hollow-face illusion. But the effect was incredible in person. We were transfixed... and not all of us were stoned. Does anyone have any idea what that painting might have been? I periodically kick myself for not buying the program for that exhibit. In retrospect, $50 is pretty reasonable for what I would have gotten from it by this time.
