Frank Black makes the list for having the best song called "Los Angeles". Actually, it's pretty much the best song, period. No further lists are necessary. Does anyone know whether any of the other members of the band continued to make music after the MGR split? Emitt is still running his studio and recording other bands. There was talk of some new material from him a few years ago but nothing was released, as far as I know. I should've put a blank line after the "albums" bit - actually it was in there to emphasize that you'd said "rock" albums (unlike the original list)...thus my "not rock" comments. It would be interesting to hear Black Flag record an album of John Cage's pieces. People who don't like Black Flag could hope it consisted entirely of different versions of "4'33""... >Not rock. > > > >etta james > > no shit. since the list that eb posted of "all time greatest l.a. acts" > included the likes of herb albert, i figured any whipped cream would do. Well, yes - but 'twas you (unless the source got lost in the multiple layers of quotations) who said "rock albums"... >dubiously "rock" > > > >steely dan Nope: "dubiously rock" was supposed to go with "Etta James" above it, not "Steely Dan" after it. Me, I like the Steely Dan music, although the post-reunion stuff has a certain edgelessness, and the sort of meta-parodic performance art aspects of the whole smoothish jazzly thing get lost because of all the lame-ass imitators over the years diminishing the juxtaposition of that music with sleazoid lyrical content. as i said, that was not my criteria; however, they do get more rock radio > airplay than, say, cat stevens. 'Sokay - I like Cat Stevens too. Underrated, definitely. True, not exactly a big rocker. (you can see i'm way out of my element...) i don't understand why *The Butcher Boy* is not available on DVD. that's one movie i'd really like to hear a director's commentary for. it's a rare combination to have a very compelling movie with likable protagonists, even though the protagonists are engaged in committing truly horrific acts; making the movie too fucked-up to love, but too entertaining not to love. the only others i can really think of are *Happiness* and *Goodfellas*. i don't even think *Clockwork Orange* qualifies, although others' mileages may vary. i concede the point. oh, if you're talking about *anything*, then, obviously i've spent the most money on hemorrhoidal creams. but if it's purely music fan-dom, for me robyn leads by a country mile. i've been thinking of creating a wikipedia entry for mark gloster & big rubber shark; but am worried that the fools, the bureaucratic fools that run the joint would just delete it. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V15 #185 ********************************
