I think you may be mistaking my lack of disagreeing with you in public as a sign of support. It's just that I got tired of constantly arguing with a guy over the Internet who sees the world in uncompromising absolutes, so I let most of your postings slide by without responding angrily. "Friendship" is what I share with people in my life who bring me warmth, happiness, camaraderie, support, or even friendly rivalry -- that kind of thing. You, however, consistently identify me (either directly or by association) as part of a global problem, a sociopath, a reactionary, a rampant consumer, a capitalist lackey, and an intellectual dullard. Why on earth do you think we are friends? I understand that in person you can be rather pleasant, but you once commented on-list that when you were staying with me and LJ, you were merely being polite; after which you harshly critiqued my lifestyle and personality online. Again, this is not something that makes me want to hang around and "overcome" anything. I'm not saying that we should be jerks to each other outside of the political sphere -- it's not that I actively dislike you or anything like that. Indeed, I still appreciate that you put up those Fiona Apple MP3s for me, and I'd do something similar for you anytime you asked. I am glad that we share a love for music, and that we can be nice to each other when politics do not enter the picture. Kindness is always to be valued; but every once in a while, I feel the urge to post a snarky comment at one of your screeds. So make of it what you will. - --Quail ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2006 15:29:07 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: My name is "Eb", and my butt hurts Capuchin wrote: > The point is that it's an adversarial relationship (or, at best, > mutually parasitic) and hardly the sort of thing that gives > pleasure to anyone but a sociopath. > > Of course, that's too much for a liberal conscience, so you can > ignore it or claim it's oversimplification or whatever in order to > continue pretending you're not part of the problem. Sorry for the ambiguity, man. I meant the sarcastic dig about my lack of finesse or nuance. I certainly didn't mean the political opinions. > "Friendship" is what I share with people in my life who bring me warmth, > happiness, camaraderie, support, or even friendly rivalry -- that kind > of thing. Hell, I don't entirely agree with most of my best and closest friends. We still bring each other warmth and happiness through respect, mutual aid, and kindness. > I understand that in person you can be rather pleasant, but you once > commented on-list that when you were staying with me and LJ, you were > merely being polite; after which you harshly critiqued my lifestyle and > personality online. If you could share that with me off-list (or on, if you feel it must be put there), I'd appreciate it. I certainly don't remember criticizing your personality or claiming to be kind out of politeness. (And, well, I've written things I didn't mean in the past... Phew, have I got some stories.) > I'm not saying that we should be jerks to each other outside of the > political sphere -- it's not that I actively dislike you or anything > like that. Good-natured mockery is fine, of course, and even joking about serious things can be welcome -- I just thought the added bit in the quote was a sign of negative feelings. You wrote that you don't actively dislike me and I take that at face value and welcome it completely. Really, that's an answer to the unasked, implied question. Thanks. This here new Mission of Burma album is really good. Of course, I suppose that since it might be said to "kick ass", my subject line may not stricly be accurate. I'm looking at the records I've loved this year and starting to think I've protested too much that I'm not excessively '80's-centric. Because let's just say that Robyn album is good... I'm going to end the year praising, what, Robyn, Burma, Sonic Youth, Verlaine, The Church... a pretty solid argument that my musical taste hasn't come all that far since 1987. On the other hand, I could instead spend my time listening to the output of any number of "new" artists whose records would fit more comfortably on a "Just Can't Get Enough" compilation than anything on the records referred to above. And as usual the stuff by newer artistst which have interested me has usuallly come in the form of belatedly discovered 2005 releases, or records that were out in the UK last year. But the Burma album is really, really good. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2006 16:19:26 -0700 From: "Marc Alberts" Subject: RE: My name is "Eb", and my butt hurts Jeme wrote: > After all, the whole purpose of markets is to exploit the people around > you to the greatest degree possible. It's a reactionary thought and a bit ludicrous (there's a difference between a possible side-effect of markets and their purpose), but .... In a week where Ann Coulter declares that Bill Clinton's promiscuity is a sign of latent homosexuality, nothing else is remotely stupid enough to bother noticing.... Nothing. We learned to talk. And we learned to listen. Speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together. To build the impossible. Mankind's greatest achievements have come about by talking. And it's greatest failures by NOT talking. It doesn't have to be like this! Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. Here's the text (which I can't find on the Mojo website but the URL is http://www.mojo4music.com/ ): Syd Barrett left his host body 35 years ago and there were many periods when I thought he had moved into mine, but that was my own fancy. You'll really find him in his records - not in a banal way, but almost physically, like a trapped personality. There's an intensity in everything he did. The words, the tune, the way he sang it, the guitar playing that accompanies it, there's something a little unearthly. It's something to do with someone not being able to live with themselves. I think there was a power struggle between Syd and Roger - I don't mean Roger Waters, I mean Roger Barrett - and that Roger Barrett won. By all accounts, he carried on doing studies of watercolours, and painting - he was kind of convincing himself he was still at art school. So he was this hybrid of a small child going around in shorts and a serious old man. Meanwhile, everyone wanted Syd: "We want Syd, where is he?" Imagine somebody that disturbed and sensitive with all these ghouls on his doorstep. It's not pretty. The tag-line describes Robyn as "Soft Boy, solo star and one of Syd's psychedelic sons". Uncut's September issue also has a Syd tribute and mentions that there is a comment from Robyn on the website (there's nothing in the magazine) but I can't find it - here's the URL http://www.uncut.co.uk/ - it may appear at a later date. I'm anything but right-wing, but it's so easy to smear this film with typical "Hmpf...smug, self-righteous liberals, pushing their leftist agenda" accusations. The film was surprisingly short -- I think the credits began at something like 87 minutes -- and the script was so one-sided and simplistic that it seemed more like propaganda than storytelling. And I thought Clooney's direction was a bit erratic, besides. Some amateurish use of handheld camera...a dull, overlong opening sequence...an introductory crawl awkwardly inserted into a subsequent scene.... And I even have mixed feelings about the choice of B&W stock. Perhaps most crucially, the material seemed pretty deja vu to me. I've heard about McCarthy before, of course, and this film really didn't add anything fresh to my perception of the saga. Fine performance by David Straithorn. Otherwise...ehh. So...sorry, but I'd rank "Crash" over this nominee too. Boy, between "Crash," "Munich," "Brokeback Mountain" and this film, the right wing REALLY has an axe to grind about the Academy favoring politically correct films, don't they? "Munich" is the only best-picture nomination from last year which I still haven't seen. Speaking of film, I also finished limping through the last bit of a 1999 film called "The Match." Usually I'm a sucker for just about any of those gentle, little-town comedies from GB/Scotland/Ireland, but this one was a real stinker. Where is Bill Forsythe when you need him?
