"Found dead in Myrtle Beach" - classic. I lived there, and a headline more common than you would think. Although I wonder what the cause of death was; strangled by a pair of size 4 orange shorts? Buried upside down in fresh chicken entrails? Heart attack from too much golf, sun, beer and fatty foods? The mind boggles. Sixty years old. Kind of an ugly demise, resulting from a gangrenous leg which needed to be amputated. Doctors said his health was too shaky a condition to withstand that kind of radical surgery, and I think he nixed the idea anyway. So, he just faded into the void. Not sure how long he was deteriorating, because he kept his condition secret for a time. Not as upsetting as you might guess, because he was kind of a hard guy to know. Sort of a mellow surfer dude at heart, who never showed much passion or energy. I don't think he ever thought of himself as my "uncle" -- partially because he's just a half-brother of my mother. Never really had a one-on-one conversation with him. Only the general chitchat of family gatherings. Rikki, Syd, Ralph...I guess there IS kind of a "death in threes" situation for me, this time. When I was little, I think I had as many as five uncles. Now I have none. Two Southern-baptist aunts left, both related by marriage rather than blood. Just to make this post a little less self-indulgent, I'll add a PS. Eb PS I saw "Match Point" last night. DAMN, that was good. No wonder the screenplay was Oscar-nominated. Amazing...Woody still breaking new ground as a writer at the age of 70. I remain deeply dubious about prettyboy Jonathan's acting talents, though. He also seems in grave danger of being typecast as an "oily, lizard-like climber." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2006 14:27:28 -0700 From: "Stacked Crooked" Subject: Re: Holy Fucking! aw, i was just trying to wind you up a bit. to the contrary. with a few exceptions here and there (rufus' first record comes to mind) i've always considered your taste in music and movies to be pretty damned good; and so have always taken your opinions in these matters squarely to heart. but, alas, it's no longer the case. actually, i consider myself fairly easy to please (theoretically): all i really want are believable plot developments, sensible dialogue, and interesting characters. *Gilmore Girls* offers none of these. (i should say that *Northern Exposure*, which i once loved to death, and upon which *Gilmore Girls* seems to have been modeled, doesn't in retrospect hold up very well.) maybe it just took 'em a few episodes to find their legs... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2006 17:56:42 -0400 From: "Stewart C. I disagree. We've been going through the seasons 1-4 DVDs, and they're every bit as entertaining as I remember them. Series 1 is a little disjointed, and the series definitely j's the s late in series 3 (the exact moment being Adam & Eve's wedding), but it holds up well. Not quite as well as Dangermouse, tho', but I'm a sucker for Cosgrove-Hall animation.
