Hmm, I've always know and liked that lyric as is. "Dark brown" seems masculine, but it's not explicit until later that Lola is not what she seems. It's actually one of my favorite touches in that song, which had been overplayed to the point where I sometimes don't pay attention to it when it comes in, but when I do, that's a little moment that reminds me that it actually was written and not just born as an obligatory singalong at live shows. Have I mentioned how excited I am to be seeing Ray Davies this weekend? - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2006 16:53:19 -0400 From: The Great Quail Subject: Re: Misheard lyrics, etc. > I always thought it was a DEADPAN voice. But I'm not much for the "universal truth in music: thing anyway, and thus even worse than knowing the lyrics is having their "meaning" explicitly explained. Plus I generally feel that once a song has come into its existence, its writer is generally changed enough by the experience, much less subsequent years and experiences, that s/he isn't on the whole, a better authority on the song than anyone else. For example, I recall a story that when Yo La Tengo was backing Ray Davies (him again) and asked to include "This Is Where I Belong", Ray reported never having performed the song apart from the at the recording session... and I know plenty of people who've truly internalized and love that song, so you could argue that Yo La Tengo or Joe Average Guy Who's Heard It A Lot has at least as much of an idea about that song as its composer. That said, I love reading about songs, so I dunno. Sometimes lyric sheets are helpful, but they are just as often confusing and often look shit on paper. I'm not a zealot about it, but I rarely let my own lyrics out to anyone aside from the people singing the harmonies. - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2006 16:38:09 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: Misheard lyrics, etc. On 7/12/06, Sebastian Hagedorn wrote: > > -- The Great Quail is rumored to have mumbled on 12. > Juli 2006 16:53:19 -0400 regarding Re: Misheard lyrics, etc.: > > >> I always thought it was a DEADPAN voice. > > > > Fucking hell. "Bedroom voice" would work but be maybe too obvious. "Darkroom voice" is kind of obscure...uh, something developing, dark, murky? Interesting phrase - - not so sure it works here though. I guess the set has changed a bit since Miles's rave review earlier this year, then, and that indeed was the basis for my enthusiasm. I consider the new album a cut above mediocre, though, and certainly like it more than most if not all of the latter-day (Arista/arena?) Kinks records. - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2006 16:05:48 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: Wrens news 2fs wrote: > You might want to know that the Wrens' website (www.wrens.com - not > www.thewrens.com, which is something totally different whose owners > I think > would be very confused by babble about Secaucus and Abbott 1135 and > what the > hell are the words to "Faster Gun" anyway) is now selling sneaky > (presumably > CD-R) copies of both Silver and Secaucus. They have been selling those for awhile, though perhaps not online. When I saw the Wrens live circa The Meadowlands, they were selling CD- Rs of the Grass stuff. Along with CD-Rs of the Abbott-1135 EP. I have one of the latter, myself. That's pretty funny - because last week, we had a bunch of friends up and attended numerous holiday gatherings...at nearly every one of which, various forms of "tubular meat product" were served. So, uh, I'm kind of TMP'd out at the moment. Some running through the grass was also indulged in.
