(ducks underneath school desk) In other extraordinarily old news, the cherry on top of just having completed ripping my entire CD library (including the oddbal effluvia) to a hard drive is that in sorting through the extra stuff I find and get to finish abandoned projects, one of which is taking the disc that someone gave me of "Side One" and "Side Two" of Pylon's CHOMP album and breaking them up into individual tracks using Audacity, and voila-- a whole Pylon album I've never heard before! Which is huge news for me, as Pylon was one of the first "obscure" bands I hunted down and has been a mainstay for me since before I even discovered half of my other favorite artists, but I haven't heard anything "new" from them since they briefly reformed in 1990 or whenever that was. So here's, like, four songs I've never heard before, and whoa, that's a completely different version of "Crazy" (and not even just a differnent mix from the single, it's a whole 'nother performance, although oddly "M-Train" is exacty the same recording as the b-side of that same single). And other than the instrumental, which is fine if by definition slight, the new-to-me songs are really great. They'd kick the asses of at least 3/4 of the Gang of Four knockoff bands in Manhattan and London, that's for sure (and they're better than "Yo-Yo", one of the tracks from this album that made it onto the HITS compilation). Between that and the surfacing of that Jerry Harrison record, I sure am looking at a lot of early angular art-dance music from the '80's that holds up a LOT better than the later slicked-up stuff. I've also run into some dub-influenced stuff that holds its own recently: "We All Stand" by New Order (random iPod selection that I liked a lot more than "Perfect Kiss" when that came on a few hours later) and "Clear It Away" by Tom Verlaine (live at The Roxy) which make me want to dial up the Raincoats' "Moving", my Bush Tetras compilation, and of cours "Remain in Light" and "Bush of Ghosts". All this stuff (and of course Gang of Four, some of that early PIL, even early second-phase Wire) are explicitly linked up in my mind, for some reason). Wonder if I'm missing any other key works from this microgenre... - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 19:01:56 +0200 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Pylon - -- Spotted Eagle Ray is rumored to have mumbled on 27. Hm, I've got Chomp and Gyrate on vinyl, but haven't listened to them in years. Still, that version of "Crazy" ist the only one I know - except for the R.E.M. one of course. So there is a different single version? How is it different? Is the single one on a CD release? I might digitize the vinyl albums, now that I have a MacBook (my G5 isn't in the same room as the stereo). I've already digitized my Trypes EP, probably my most treasured vinyl item. - -- Sebastian Hagedorn Ehrenfeldg|rtel 156, 50823 Kvln, Germany http://www.spinfo.uni-koeln.de/~hgd/ "Being just contaminates the void" - Robyn Hitchcock ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 10:12:59 -0700 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: Pylon On 6/27/06, Sebastian Hagedorn wrote: > > > Hm, I've got Chomp and Gyrate on vinyl, but haven't listened to them in > years. The version on the "Hits" CD is less jangly and more phasey, has a different vocal performance, and the lead guitar part in the chorus only occurs once (as more of a solo break). I believe the CD version is lifted from the single. The album version of "M-Train" sounds identical to the version on the "Hits" CD and I think it was lifted from the b-side of the same single. - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 13:35:51 -0400 From: FSThomas Subject: Re: Pylon Spotted Eagle Ray wrote: >> Still, that version of "Crazy" ist the only one I know - except for >> the R.E.M. one of course. We got to see Pylon probably about six months ago at a local bar's birthday party. I don't think they have any aspirations of going full-bore back into writing music, but they performed *extremely* well and seemed to be having a good time. They've played a few other gigs since, mostly in the Athens area. - -f. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 10:50:24 -0700 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: Pylon On 6/27/06, FSThomas wrote: > > > We got to see Pylon probably about six months ago at a local bar's > birthday party. My brother's moving to Athens in the fall so maybe just maybe I'll get to plan a visit that just happens to coincide with a Pylon gig. I guess I'll need to get up to speed on Of Montreal or whoever else is from there since I stopped paying attention. - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 12:29:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Capuchin Subject: Re: reap (50% TV's-all-time-overrated-show content / 50% overrated '80's jangle content) On Tue, 27 Jun 2006, Spotted Eagle Ray wrote: > On 6/26/06, Eb wrote: >> >> http://people.aol.com/people/articles/0,19736,1208083,00.html > > Odd, I don't see anything about "The Gilmore Girls" here. But at least nobody's dead and I no longer truly credit band breakups, and it will be interesting to see what they get up to on their own. I think the last time I saw them was at the Sunset Junction Street Fair, which reminds me, this year's lineup strikes me as the most lacklustre one in some time. Some who are bigger Eels fans than myself may disagree, but there's not much going on here that I haven't either seen before or would ever have paid to see as a headliner (there are usually at least two each day of the fair).
