So sad, as I archived a lot of stuff when I first got one, thinking they were pretty indestructible. I transferred almost all of my 50+ teenage mixtapes to CD very early on (and got rid of the tapes!) and most of them don't play now. Grrr. I even used what I thought were good CDRs at the time, Kodak golds. I have had good luck with different players, though. Some seem to be able to compensate for crappy CDs better than others. But once the disk is too far gone, nothing will seem to play it. Sometimes I can use Exact Audio Copy to rip a new one, but not always. - -P - -----Original Message----- From: owner-fegmaniax@smoe.org [mailto:owner-fegmaniax@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Spotted Eagle Ray Sent: Thursday, June 22, 2006 4:09 PM To: the late b.p. helium Cc: fegmaniax@smoe.org Subject: Re: Invisible Hitchcock On 6/22/06, the late b.p. helium wrote: > > glad to see woj and the rest still here! > > so... my copy of Invisible Hitchcock is decaying and i've done a few > searches, but it looks like its maybe out of print? does anyone have > leads? Almost all solo RH is out of print! Are you talking disc rot here? Similar topic: anyone finding your oldier CDR's going to hell? A friend has a few 10+ year-old CDR's which've gone totally non-functional. I'm seeing some that just look weird, either sorta dusky or even transparent-ish. Can't be more than seven or eight years old, I figure. - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2006 10:01:51 -0700 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: more than one raven On 6/22/06, Carrie Galbraith wrote: > > It's a Bevy of Quail, an Unkindness of Ravens and a Parliament of > Owls (and yes, a Murder of Crows). > - c Possibly more to the point, why the hell do different bird species warrant so many differing and esoteric collective names, whereas most other animals are just "bunches" or "groups" or "herds"? I mean, sure, you have your pods of whales, your prides of lions, etc., but that's not nearly so roccoco (for example, most fish groups are schools, which, although a little odd, doesn't vary by species). Where'd this whole convention come from? - -Rx ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2006 10:03:08 -0700 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: New torrent - R.E.M: 1991-03-14 - London - Borderline (DVD audio rip) On 6/23/06, wojbearpig wrote: > > > 29. My oldest CD-Rs are 7 years old and still in fine shape. I jut picked up the DVD BBC documentary: Gram Parsons....Fallen Angel. I had no idea the amount of footage that was available of the Burritos and Gram. It was an extremely well done documentary with interviews from Keith Richards, Emmylou Harris, Chris Hillman, Peter Buck, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakum and Parsons family members and friends. A must buy for even the casual Gram fan. I misread the original post as referring to reg'lar CDs - but anyway, only a couple CD-Rs of mine have died. Curiously, the two I remember were both burned by the same person (probably with the same equipment - although I don't recall whether they were the same brand of disc). What often does happen is the damned stick-on labels start falling off or sliding - which is why I never, ever use them. Oh - and for reasons I cannot fathom, two CD-Rs actually *cracked* radially. They were in the same 2-disc set a friend burned for me (a compilation of an eccentric Scottish musician and writer - fortunately, I've since picked up a significant portion of his back catalog). No idea why. Weird. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2006 12:27:23 -0700 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: Invisible Hitchcock and Fallen Angel On 6/23/06, 2fs wrote: > > > Oh - and for reasons I cannot fathom, two CD-Rs actually *cracked* > radially. > They were in the same 2-disc set a friend burned for me (a compilation of > an > eccentric Scottish musician and writer - fortunately, I've since picked up > a > significant portion of his back catalog). No idea why. Weird. I bet it was the spindle on the jewel case... I bought some cheap double-disc jewel cases in bulk one time, and the two-sided spindle was constructed such that it exerted pressure outward ono the discs. Consequently within a few years all of the discs stored in them had developed hairline fractures radiating from the center, sometime full-blown cracks. I had some fairly unique material (my dad's band's records digitized from vinyl) on the discs and when my then-wife lost the master discs, I had to borrow back the versions of the same discs that I'd burned for some friends to try and save the work. I'd put ALL of them in the same brand of jewel case and there were cracks in all of them. Fortunately not in the same places, and all of them has rippable portions, so between the three copies and a master of an earlier version, I got it all back. So I bet your friend had the same or similarly crappy jewel cases and has probably lost a few discs to them himself. (Another unfortunate victim of them was a very nice live 2-disc set by the dB's provided by our very own Brian Nupp.) - -SER ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2006 14:50:21 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: 100% AB content On 6/22/06, matt sewell wrote: > > Dead fegs, > > It's a pleasure to finally announce the release of Anton Barbeau's > psychedelic > classic album In The Village Of The Apple Sun. It's very tasty, and even pEBople who get a sour taste from the notion of Scott Miller might find his songwriting here a bit more direct and straightforward musically, even though lyrically there are still some twists. It's just that nothing he's ever done (that I can think of) every interested me much.
