I saw them at a midnight show at Metro a couple weeks back, and it was stellar. And oh boy, are they ever loud. Not so bombastic, though - professional and tight; they said maybe twenty words all night. It was 90 straight minutes of thumpin' music. I'd missed the last two times they came through in smaller venues building an audience, but in a way I'm kind of glad because this show they had all of "Ten Silver Drops" to pull from in addition to the first album + EP's. There was not a weak song in the set list (s.b.), which started out heavy on the new stuff and picked up older stuff late. All the rockers from TSD were played, plus three songs from "Road Leads Where its Led" EP, before finishing with the hammers from NHIN. As I had hoped the sound just gets IMMENSE live - my only worry going in was whether or not they could replicate that wall of sound onstage with only three guys, but man do they take care of business. Brandon and (particularly) Benjamin expertly loop and layer their parts, filling out melody and rhythms while Josh bangs away like a deranged Bonham. The song formula of slower, psych-rock that turns into straight eight power rhythm is built for the live show. It effin' ROCKED. I don't own any Donovan on CD, so I might have to rectify that problem. As for Joni Mitchell, I don't even known what is on Hejira. I have Ladies of the Canyon, Blue, and Court and Spark, have them all memorized, and that's it. What is on Hejira anyway? I think that my current obsession with Belle and Sebastian has rekindled my interest in Donovan. I can't at the moment think of what B&S song it is, but one of them has a piece ripped right out of Jennifer Juniper. I was planning to leave midway through their set, if they weren't that impressive, because I had to drive right back to Phoenix and head straight to work. They were absolutely great. Funny, brash, and energetic. They kind of reminded me of the Sex Pistols or Ramones, not in their sound, but in that they seem to have a unique band attitude/philosophy that shows in all of their songs. So, live at least, I would highly recommend them. Marc To me, boxing is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography and the dancers hit each other. My case in point, search for the film "Ruby in Paradise" at the Netflix site. It comes up with box art which was clearly created by taking the VHS box art and stretching it to DVD proportions...it is well known that this film is not available on DVD. Since Netflix lists it anyway, does this mean (1) I can add this film to my want list but I will not receive it until the film is released after Ashley Judd's death in 2056 (2) this is a Netflix exclusive and I will actually receive it, in which case I will sell it on eBay for $100 instead of returning it or (3) Netflix has inside information about a release date for this item? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 May 2006 14:05:09 -0700 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: fegmaniax-die #09 On 5/24/06, Benjamin Lukoff wrote: > > > > Isn't this just a modern example of party favors? Basically, yeah. I think it also reflects (in this specific case) how cheap knockoff DVD's have become in such a short time. I'm seeing DVD's of, like, "five classic westerns" in paper sleeves for a buck at the checkout stands in 7-11's. I find it sort of cool. - -Rx ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 May 2006 17:42:38 -0400 From: "Bachman, Michael" Subject: RE: Netflix (100% off topic) HSatterfld@aol.com wrote: >A question for Netflix users out there, are they known for allowing you to >add imaginary DVDs to your wish list? >My case in point, search for the film "Ruby in Paradise" at the Netflix >site. I think you can add DVDs that don't yet exist in Netflix, the logic being that that way you don't have to pay attention to release dates, and when the DVD finally is released, it'll be in your queue already. I think Amazon does the same thing (i.e., the number of people who've done so with the Twin Peaks season 2 set - which doesn't yet exist - is sufficient to put it fairly high in their best-sellers list). I don't think it means that there's inside info or that there's a special exclusive. Why does Ashley Judd have to die though? I mean, other than the usual reasons. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 May 2006 14:47:31 -0700 From: "Jason Brown" Subject: Re: Netflix (100% off topic) On 5/24/06, HSatterfld@aol.com wrote: > A question for Netflix users out there, are they known for allowing you to > add imaginary DVDs to your wish list? You are able to add out of print, not yet on DVD, and to be released items to a Saved queue, which is displayed under your regular queue. When they are available or soon to be available they transfer to the bottom of your regular queue. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 May 2006 21:40:06 -0700 From: Carrie Galbraith Subject: Re: Donovan and other musings On May 24, 2006, at 10:59 AM, Jill Brand wrote: > Whatever album Lalena (put a little squiggle over that n) is on, my > brother had it, and when he wasn't around, I would take it from his > room and play Lalena (with squiggle) over and over and over and > over on my highly inferior record player. And I too know every word to Court and Spark, Blue, Ladies of the Canyon, Song to a Seagull, Clouds and For the Roses (my personal fave at the time). After her live album release - Miles of Aisles - in '74 (don't it feel like it???), she came out with her first electric albums to mixed reviews IIRC. I quite liked them but lost her with her Mingus album and have never really listened again. Hejira was what I would call "road music" with songs like Coyote, Amelia (an ode to Ms. Earhart of course) and Refuge of the Roads. On my recent train trip from NYC to SF, I had Hejira on the 'pod and listened to it every day of that 5 day journey. It really holds up. Lalena (it's a tilde over the n) first appears on Donovan's Greatest Hits from '69 or '70. I hadn't really thought of the B&S sound but now that you mention it - I knew there was another reason I liked Belle and Sebastian... I dunno about that; I did indeed get Blue because of a cover of "A Case Of You" (by the Mountain Goats), but I pretty much immediately fell in love with the whole record EXCEPT for that song. It's not typical for me, but I follow common opinion in that I like "Blue" and "Court & Spark" best in her catalog. Which is odd because they are in some ways the most like normal '70's singer-songwriter records, which I don't as a rule like that much... maybe it's a matter of feeling like only Joni got the idiom right. There are really cool aspects to that later stuff, but I think her weirdness starts to bend a little too far in the muso direction for me, and I tend to like my arty stuff more visceral-intuitive than screwy-jazzy (personal taste, but hey, I like Wire and don't much care for Zappa). Again, though, I like her weird jazz crap better than, say... well, most anyone else's, and I haven't spent as much time as I should have with "Hejira" and "Hissing" (the latter of which certainly has one of the coolest album titles of all time). - -Rx ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 2006 13:25:23 -0500 From: "Michael Wells" Subject: so would that make it... ...Bobbi Zimmerman? http://tinyurl.com/r8nm6 Michael ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V15 #114 ********************************
