Okay, I recognized Joe Pernice, Sparks (!), Thurston 'n' Kim from Sonic Youth (but who was that other guitar player?), Sam Phillips*, Yo La Tengo, and Chloe ;-) - but I'm clueless on who the older guy with the gray beard was, as well as the trio with acoustic bass near the end. Anyone? * Some ultra-obsessive fan should rewatch every episode and count up exactly how many times Phillips has sung the syllable "la" during the course of the series...but it won't be me. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 15:37:41 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Semi-reap? (a manic beat preacher) http://www.filter-mag.com/news/interior.3194.html Steve Mason, formerly of The Beta Band has vanished, leaving nothing but a cryptic message on his webpage. Mason vanished from all contact with his record company and his management days before his latest album, under the moniker King Biscuit Time, is due to be released in the UK on May 15th. Subsequent tourdates have been cancelled. Mason left the following message for fans: " Peace to you all. I'm out of here. It's been amazing but I've had enough. The mountain beat me and sadly you too. That don't mean you should give up. It just wasn't me. Over and out, Steve." There has been much speculation about the Masons mental health following the turbulent life of The Beta Band. Sadly the bands influence far outstripped their popularity, at one point the group was in 1.2m pounds of debt, with only their last album Heroes To Zeros enjoying any chart success. Hopefully, this self-imposed exile will be beneficial. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 16:06:39 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: Gilmore Girls guests? > Okay, I recognized Joe Pernice, Sparks (!), Thurston 'n' Kim from > Sonic > Youth (but who was that other guitar player?), That was daughter Coco, ya silly! Anyone? I didn't get all of them either -- I didn't even recognize Pernice until I saw the credits. And I wonder if there were even MORE hidden cameos in that one wide shot of the plaza with all the troubadours strewn about.... I was trying to get the names from the credits, but I taped at six- hour speed and they were fuzzy in freeze-frame. But I gathered that Daniel Palladino himself was in one of the troubadour groups. I also saw the names "Dave Rygalski" and "Brian Zydiak" in the credits, and the web indicates they're in a band called "Hee Hee Hee"? And I guess that's a double joke, because Adam Brody's pre-OC character on Gilmore Girls was dubbed "Dave Rygalski" as well. I don't know about the graybeard at all. But hasn't he appeared on the show already? I had heard beforehand that the finale would be a troubadour clusterfuck and, all things considered, I expected a bit more starpower than it actually provided. Where were the Shins? Daniel Johnston? It's easy to come up with names which would have fit the Palladinos' previously exhibited tastes. (Wow...just think how eerie it would have been if they had happened to cast Grant McLennan....) He looks a lot older all of a sudden. I even knew pretty much who was going to be on and I only recognized a few of 'em. I don't think I look at pictures of musicians very much, or something. I wouldn't have recognized Pernice, except their recent mailing noted he was on the show, and of course once he started singing I recognized his voice, and he looked like a guy named "Pernice" should look. In some interview, he pointed out that "Pernice" is Italian for "Partridge." I still think he and Andy P. should form a group. And find people surnamed Rebhuhn, Kuropatka, Perdiza, etc... Guess what the band is called... And then Eric Bachmann and Joe Turner's hypothetical group can open for them. Stop me before I point out that the Eels guy should have done rap under the name MC Squared.
