I'd interpret that to mean "centered on acoustic guitar, but not drumless." Odd that I received two posted replies before receiving my own initial forward. Hm. The Julian Cope list just offered me a company sigfile and an Ash Ra Temple mp3 to be named later.... I'd say take it, though it's not every list where you see the word "ensorcelled" come up in conversation. Wait, doesn't woj mod that list too? Because drums are all 'lectronic. You're probably right, of course - I just think it's funny the way "acoustic" has come to connote more than just an unamplified version of an often-amplified instrument. It would have been amusing, back when that "Unplugged" thing was going around, had someone arranged their music for like 20 bagpipers and a barrage of trombonists and metal percussion... - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 May 2006 19:58:42 -0700 From: "michael wells" Subject: whiy do I love the internet? http://www.youtube.com/results?search=captain+sensible &search_type=search_videos ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 May 2006 14:13:23 -0700 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: '80s-retro nooz On 5/5/06, 2fs wrote: > > > Because drums are all 'lectronic. > > You're probably right, of course - I just think it's funny the way > "acoustic" has come to connote more than just an unamplified version of an > often-amplified instrument. Weird era. KROQ's holiday concert used to be called "Acoustic Christmas", and then it got changed to "*Almost* Acoustic Christmas". I think I attended the last one without the "almost" in the title. By that time "unplugged" had come to mean "the musicians are sitting down"-- which is what The Cult did, on a big carpet, with huge amps and electric guitars, at that show. Meanwhile people playing actual acoustic instruments continued to defiantly (and literally, literally!) stand at coffeehouses all over the darn place, as they had since... ... I think Guns 'N' Roses had something to do with it. I can remember when actual acoustic, drumless contemporary performances seemed rare enough that I made a compilation of what I think was ever one that I owned on a 90 minute cassette. Don't remember what all was on it other than "Skyway" by the Replacements. I'd probably been collection music "seriously" for about three months or something. I think that, although I had musical blinders of various kinds on at the time, there actually were fewer drumless songs and records being issued around that time, and that that is somehow related to my earlier "monolithic '80's rock sound" idea. Yeah... weird era. - -Rx ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 May 2006 06:44:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Used Monitor Shopping My computer monitor has gone blue (you can still read things, but it's like looking at things through really blue sunglasses), and I can't afford to go buy a new one, but I was thinking maybe about buying a used one. Since there's been recent talk of Thomas Dolby, I highly recommend the album Enlish Garden by Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club. - -Nuppy Sent: Friday, May 05, 2006 2:08 AM Subject: Hypnotique News: Japanese theremin orchestra May 6,7 and TV show May 8th Attention please: some ether activity for you coming up this week. See Masami Takeuchi's website: http://www.mandarinelectron.com/theremin/ NEW MUSIC I have been 'experimenting' with a sharp change of musical direction: pop music, which is as dark and challenging as ever, but will you be able to tell when you're dancing to the pulsing, disco beats? Produced with the kind aide of the ever-dazzling DJ/producer/performer and Warp Records artist John Callaghan - check out the first results: "You Lie! You Cheat!" It's a tribute to girl power via Riot Grrl, Kirsty MacColl and the Buena Vista Social Club realised through Spanish-holiday style grooves, woodwind licks, megaphone expletitives, and an instrumental performed on an egg slicing device. I'm hoping it might make it as a B-side for the next Geri Halliwell release. It's on My Space thingy (dreadful but somehow useful): http://www.myspace.com/misshypnotique .and check out John's website, too: http://www.johncallaghan.co.uk Let me know what you think of this new direction. I hope the track proves there's more to Hypnotique than disturbing lofi electro acoustic music, songs about genocide, infanticide, Victoriana and ritual murder! Other music. Hypnotique's debut album "The Hanging Garden" (soothing and uplifting music for the impending apocalypse) and the live album conceptual art work "Pact With The Devil" are both still available for listening, perusal, purchase.more retail 'goodies' will be coming up shortly when time allows. http://www.hypnotique.net/multimedia/discography.htm Thanks for your attention. May 5, 2006, 7:14 am Our good friends at CNET recently had Robyn Hitchcock and Scott McCaughey in the studio, and the results have been committed to a downloadable MP3 stream which the kids apparently are calling a "popcast." We might have misheard. Here's the CNET blurb: "Program 1 features cult legend Robyn Hitchcock and Minus 5 leader Scott McCaughey. They perform a cover of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone," "Red Locust Frenzy," and "The Days of Wine and Booze," among others. The two discuss playing Soft Boys tunes on tour, life with R.E.M., and keeping up their Web sites."
