Pete and Steve are still in it, unless there was another change between last time around and this. They sound great and seem to be having a great time. I saw them a couple of times last tour and wound up getting invited in to one of the backstage parties after the show here in Tempe. Really, really nice guys who seem to appreciate their fans. The newer songs aren't bad, but they don't stick in your mind as well as the earlier stuff, even after repeated listenings. Fortunately, they tend to focus on the older material quite a bit, so it's a good balance. >I am not saying that some people who do not want to >date outside of their culture are *not* racist, prejudiced, >or ignorant. Just thought I'd point out that there are also people who would include a racial profile for the intent of attracting people from outside their own culture rather than to exclude people different from themselves. It really isn't that much more of an indicator, on its own, of what a person is looking for than listing their gender. You know, the deeper we got into that discussion, the more I realized that it was really damned hard to word it so that it was clear whether I was talking about advertising one's OWN race/gender/orientation in an ad, or specifying what one wanted in a PARTNER. See, even that was hopelessy convoluted. Just give me fish eggs and violins. - -Rx ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2006 16:23:50 -0400 From: "Brian Nupp" Subject: Reap (belated) Rod Johnson- drummer on Groovy Decay. B) I think it's interesting that almost immediately, the observation that the persistence of racial categories in personal ads indicates the persistence of racialized thinking gave way to the notion that I was saying people who do so indicate are *bad*, and to attempts to *justify* such behavior. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2006 18:09:19 -0400 From: "Brian Nupp" Subject: Re: Reap (belated) - ---- Original Message ---- From: spottedeagleray@gmail.com To: nightshadecat@mailbolt.com Subject: Re: Reap (belated) Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2006 14:54:40 -0700 >On 4/28/06, Brian Nupp wrote: >> >> Rod Johnson- drummer on Groovy Decay. > > >And with that, and my having quoted "Somewhere Apart" earlier today, >GROOVY >DECAY (etc.) officially, surprisingly becomes the most-referred-to RH >album >on this list today... this week... this month? > >-Rx, Somewhere Apart is from Element Of Light ain't it? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2006 14:54:40 -0700 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: Reap (belated) On 4/28/06, Brian Nupp wrote: > > Rod Johnson- drummer on Groovy Decay. He was 48. Howe was killed at 5:55 a.m. PDT, said Dalyn Backes of the Riverside County coroner's office. The accident occurred about 130 miles east of Los Angeles. Howe was the 1980 NL Rookie of the Year with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and helped them win the World Series the next year. But for all of Howe's success on the field, the hard-throwing lefty was constantly troubled by addictions -- he was suspended seven times and became a symbol of the rampant cocaine problem that plagued baseball in the 1980s. "Steve played for me for five years and I thought the world of him," former Dodgers manager Tom Lasorda said. "I am truly sorry to hear about his passing and my deepest sympathies go out to his family." "His speed was a marvel," added musician Jon Anderson. "It was an honor to see him play." There was a moment of silence at Yankee Stadium before New York played Toronto on Friday night. Howe played for the Yankees from 1991-1996. Howe was 47-41 with 91 saves and a 3.03 ERA with the Dodgers, Minnesota, Texas and Yankees. His final season in the majors was 1996, and the Yankees released him in June. Two days after the Yankees let him go, Howe was arrested at a Delta Airlines terminal at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport when a loaded .357 Magnum was detected inside his suitcase. He later pleaded guilty to gun possession and was placed on three years probation and given 150 hours of community service. Howe tried a comeback in 1997 with Sioux Falls of the independent Northern League. In August, he was critically injured in a motorcycle accident in Montana and charged with drunken driving. Ms. Brand raises the above question to which I WHOLE HEARTEDLY respond -- YES!!!!! Their latest, "Flat Pack Philosophy" is the greatest. Best thing they've done since the "Trade Test Transmissions" elpee from ...sheesh, is it over ten years ago now!?! I last seen 'em ...Shelley, Diggs, Tony(The Creation, Airport, et/al)Barber and Phil(EXTREEEEMELY Moonian drummer)Barker ...last for me was the tour they did when Petey and Howard Devoto did that album. Five years ago now ...? Like 1979 ALL over again. I followed The Buzzcocks around a couple times back then as they were my fave band and they were over every couple months for a while there ...fave band, eh, well, one of them. Saw the reformation of the *original*/no Garth or Howie *original* band that is back in 88 when the box set "Product" came out, splendid ...trust me, this band is as great as the band w/Garvey and Maher from daze o'yore. Never saw the *original* Steve, Pete, Garth and Howard act ...for the record. They're doing a couple dates in a bit off -before- the WARPED tour miasma, Boston, NYC, Toronto for starters, maybe a couple more. Then that abject mess, then they come back around to do a Buzzcocks tour proper as it's their THIRTIETH anny this year. I wonder if there's a video clip online anywhere of that "funky bass- guitar pluck" move which Leno used when he first took over, in the hopes of duplicating Carson's signature "golf swing" bit. Does anyone else remember that horror? Instantly announced to everyone that the new Tonight Show had an empty vessel in charge. Man, I'd love to see that again.
