Anyone know whether this was a deliberate nod to Neil's sometime colleagues, or just a coincidence? I think you reading too much into this. You seem to think that "race" is merely a set of physical characteristics, when it's also very cultural. I don't think that it's a major revelation to state that, in general, whites, blacks, Latinos, Asians, etc. may have significant cultural differences; not to mention the combined weight of various communal and family pressures. When dating out of your race, you must often deal with a lot of things that are unfamiliar, from different a different set of social experiences to a different set of shared reference points in music, history, art, etc. Not to mention the tensions that may exist within both families. The fact of the matter is, many people are not interested in dealing with all of this; it lies outside of their cultural comfort zone. This is simply human nature, and has been like that throughout all of history. Of course, adventurous fringe members *will* put this aside and begin to merge with "the Other," and in time the norms are shifted and things change. But then there's always another "Other" to arise and the cycle repeats. I think that its very easy for a white guy, married, who has never dated outside of his own racial group, to sit back and write emails that seem to increasingly condemn people who simply want to stick the the familiar when trying to find a date.... I am not saying that some people who do not want to date outside of their culture are *not* racist, prejudiced, or ignorant. I'm just saying that not everyone who posts SWF or SBM needs to be so, and there's no reason to take them to task for not displaying the willingness to embark on a cultural expedition. - --Quail Preferences: Midwestern hippies, Irish Redheads, Jewish girls (esp. the rare Jewish redhead), Soul Sisters, Japanese chicks who know martial arts, Indian princesses, and bisexual goth chicks. I'm resurfacing for a quick question. Should I go to see the Buzzcocks? Even though they count as one of my top 10 favorite bands (probably), I've never seen them and, lo, this morning I got word that they will be coming to Boston. Has anyone seen them in their sunset years? Who are they these days (I'm assuming that Pete Shelley is still in the band, but who else?)? I only allow myself a few music indulgences a year (last year's Decemberists thing was a bit of an aberration), so I would love opinions. I don't have any firsthand experience of the Buzzcocks of The 21st Century, but their resurrection has lasted longer than one might've thought and seems to garner more positive press with each release, so... - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2006 16:36:44 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: do I want to see the Buzzcocks? Other than the first tour with Mike Joyce, I think they've had the same rhythm section for the entirity of their reformation (now in it's 17th year, I think), though it's not John Maher on drums with the revolving door of bass players that it was 77-80. Drop in for tea on Sunday along with Brian Hoare and you can meet my two vividly redheaded Jewish stepdaughters!
