What a great band, but yes, their stuff is hard to find on CD--I'm still looking for "Salon". I had seen this new compilation listed, but no label information, so I wasn't sure if it was another bootleg(ish) release like the Mink Dress compilation. Good to see them finally get a re-issue. You can still get the album "Plasticland" (which is really just a re-package of their first album "Color Appreciation'') from the Midnight Records website. I got really lucky and found their "Wonder Wonderful Wonderland" CD used for 6.99 a couple of years ago, but have never seen a copy of Salon anywhere. This comes from the booklet to the Mink Dress compilation: "Psychedelia was a dirty word for many musicians and fans as the aftershock of punk rock settled in the early '80s. It took a vision and not a little courage in 1980 for Glenn Rehse, John Frankovic, and Victor Demechei to form Plasticland--a group whose stated mission was to recover that lost figment of pop culture. Aside from Robyn Hitchcock's Soft Boys, contemporary role models were scarce. Plasticland stood out from their sullen punk contemporaries like a scarf of multi-colored paisley against a regiment in black. They chose to be different than everybody else and they were good at what they chose to do." Not a bad recommendation. Looking forward to this one, Marc btw--fans of really twisted and weird music (Eddie in particular) would want to know that Rehse and Frankovic co-wrote, along with Voot Warnings, "Dance Motherfucker Dance" (as covered by the Violent Femmes), as well as many other songs on Voot's album "Platinum". The "Platinum" in the album title probably refers to Voot's blonde wig and dressing in drag rather than predicting huge CD sales. There should be a detective show called "Johnny Monkey," because every week you could have a guy say "I ain't gonna get caught by no MONKEY," but then he would, and I don't think I'd ever get tired of that. When Johnny comes over here its just him or just him and Scott, stripped down (musically I mean) and acoustic. Not saying thats a bad thing, but Id love to see the full band. Found out the other day it might not be as impossible as Id thought to play a few gigs over there on the West coast. My dream tour would be LA to Vancouver, stopping at all the relevant places. So whens the Skates & Rays + The Black Watch show? Are you counting on any of the CA fegs attending? Id imagine Eb and Lawndart are a must! I think you reading too much into this. You seem to think that "race" is merely a set of physical characteristics, when it's also very cultural. I don't think that it's a major revelation to state that, in general, whites, blacks, Latinos, Asians, etc. may have significant cultural differences; not to mention the combined weight of various communal and family pressures. When dating out of your race, you must often deal with a lot of things that are unfamiliar, from different a different set of social experiences to a different set of shared reference points in music, history, art, etc. Not to mention the tensions that may exist within both families. The fact of the matter is, many people are not interested in dealing with all of this; it lies outside of their cultural comfort zone. This is simply human nature, and has been like that throughout all of history. Of course, adventurous fringe members *will* put this aside and begin to merge with "the Other," and in time the norms are shifted and things change. But then there's always another "Other" to arise and the cycle repeats. I think that its very easy for a white guy, married, who has never dated outside of his own racial group, to sit back and write emails that seem to increasingly condemn people who simply want to stick the the familiar when trying to find a date.... I am not saying that some people who do not want to date outside of their culture are *not* racist, prejudiced, or ignorant. I'm just saying that not everyone who posts SWF or SBM needs to be so, and there's no reason to take them to task for not displaying the willingness to embark on a cultural expedition. - --Quail Preferences: Midwestern hippies, Irish Redheads, Jewish girls (esp. the rare Jewish redhead), Soul Sisters, Japanese chicks who know martial arts, Indian princesses, and bisexual goth chicks. The bonus DVD has some real nice features on Miles Davis and interviews with Jeanne Moreau and Rene Urtreger. Rene was the pianist and recorded the interview in 2005 as the last living member of the quintet that performed on the soundtrack. The sound that Miles and the band made was the springboard to Miles subsequent great albums such as Milestones and Kind of Blue and changed jazz forever. I wish there were a way to rank discussions on a numeric scale - from "10" meaning THIS IS SO FUCKING IMPORTANT YOU WILL DIE IF YOU DON'T READ IT!!! to "1" meaning "essentially, self-filmed close-up slomo nosepicking with self-overdubbed commentary." This discussion should have ranked about a "3" - yet from the amount of words spilled forth on it (guilty as charged, sir) you'd think it was the most important thing to hit Fegworld since, I dunno, Robyn released an album and no one talked about it again. So what other minuscule aspects of large topics can I mischievously encourage people to rake endlessly over the same coals made from beaten-to-death horses? > I think I literally just said that I'd stopped dating! Again, this is that sort of dated '80s jangle-pop where I kinda deviate from prominent list preferences. Even so, "Flowering" was close to the best record Doctor Dream ever put out -- though that's somewhat faint praise, considering what else the label released.
