I've never heard of this show, but I assume it must have a flavor of strained subversion and childlike mischievousness. I saw "Capote" last night...damn good film. Yes, I liked it better than "Crash," though it still doesn't bother me that "Crash" won Best Picture. As gloriously sick as WS is, it's too erratic and has too many segments that end up dragging a bit. The restriction of having to keep the kids from completely getting all the jokes makes that inevitable though. > < part about how much Trey and Matt dislike being > compared to _Family Guy,_ since FG's jokes are > too frequently non-sequiturs while SP's are mostly > ingrained into the plot.>> > > years, and getting nothing but blank stares back. > Jeez, if Matt and Trey have taken down both > Scientology and FAMILY GUY in the space of less than > a month, I say, sainthoods all around.> > > i only get to watch *South Park* when it comes out > on DVD, so haven't seen the episodes in question. > but it's not apparent from jeff's post that > *South Park* has been "taking down" *Family Guy* so > much as taking on the perception that the two are > alike. It's obvious from the episodes that Matt & Trey don't particularly like _Family Guy,_ though they were more interested in taking on the ideas of censorship, cowering network executives as useful idiots, than in bothering with _Family Guy;_ FG was just a useful means to make their points, while they could point out the big difference between the two shows. It should be noted that while Cartman (and "Bart Simpson") both hate the show, Kyle likes it for what it is. "A severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer." -- Mitch Hedberg . Tired of spam? So naturally I decide to download the first season of Gilmore Girls so that Fegmaniax will make sense to me again. Before today I'd never seen even part of an episode. Now I'm 5 episodes in to the first season and I'm thoroughly smitten. Smote. The show did smite me. I like it a lot. I don't remember in whose camp that puts me, but I can assure whoever it is that we probably disagree on all the important stuff, so no worries. +brian ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Apr 2006 17:21:20 -0700 From: "Lauren Elizabeth (gmail)" Subject: Re: As usual when talk turns to The Fall... > On Sat, 15 Apr 2006, Eb wrote: > I saw "Capote" last night...damn good film. I always thought that first scene in "Lost Highway" (where the couple receiving videotapes of their house) had a lot of potential. And it's almost as French as David Lynch. "Thank You for Smoking" was very entertaining. I was not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. I also saw "Friends with Money" - IMO, Ms. Holofcener is juggling too many characters with this one; I liked the simplicity of her earlier movies. In this movie, no one really gets along, or if they do, it's in a sort of oblivious manner. Between "Friends with Money" and "Crash", L.A. is looking kind of combative. On DVD, it's been Antonioni. I finally noticed that "Blow-up" had been released on DVD. Hey, I believe the audio commentator even used the word "diagetic". I watched the trilogy too. It's the first time I saw "L'Eclisse". I very much like the lack of non-diagetic noise in Antonioni's work (before this thread, that thought would have taken me three sentences, or one very long one.) It's so out of the ordinary that his movies sometimes seem silent. xo Lauren - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "People with opinions just go around bothering one another." - The Buddha ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2006 12:26:06 +1200 From: James Dignan Subject: Back in action at last Sorry to break into such an in-depth discussion of a TV show I've never heard of, but I'm buzzing after - a couple of nights ago - performing music before a live audience for the first time in two years. Admittedly it was only a couple of songs, but it was a reasonably high-powered audience and by the general comments afterwards mine was one of the best performances of the night. The event was a local seminar run by APRA (the NZ equivalent of ASCAP), and because of that th audience was almost entirely made up of songwriters and musicians. It was a seminar followed by an open mic stage, with a dozen acts each performing two songs. It'll give some idea of the calibre that among the other people performing were Martin Phillipps and Robert Scott (The Clean/The Bats). I made a not so subtle hint that I was looking to get back into music by performing as a support act, and one well known local musician came up to me afterwards and said "hint noted". So fingers crossed... Whee! Can I just say that I caught a couple of minutes of Family Guy last night. Not merely was the humour limited to none, it was really badly drawn. But Absolutely might be coming out on DVD, so I will be happy (eventually). It's only taken 16 years ...
