(this is one reason i despised *The Sixth Sense* so thoroughly, incidentally.) and in the case of *24*, when they came back from the first commercial break, and supposedly ten minutes (or something like) of "real time" had elapsed...uh, okay... even more hilariously, jack bauer gets from his house somewhere in the hills to his office in downtown in *five minutes* of "real time"? uh, can an angeleno even get out of his or her *driveway* in five minutes' time? (yeah, i know it was midnight or whatever -- but my experience is that LA freeways are jam-packed 24/7.) i had some friends put it a little differently (acknowledging that the show is patently ridiculous): they'd rather dream about people like jack bauer running the show than to be faced with the reality of gee-dub and donald h. rumsfeld running the show. anyhow, speaking of first-season DVDs, i recently downloaded disc 1 of season 1 of *Wonder Showzen*, and...am...speechless. if this show doesn't win every fucking emmy in the whole wide fucking world (including for "coolest series title in the history of teevee"), then there is no justice. but none! Well, it's been about 2 years since I watched any episodic TV, but among the last things that held the interest of super-lefty me was indeed "24". I didn't find it jingoist at all, really, although certainly it could be taken that way, I guess, in that sorta Ronnie Reagan loves "Born in the USA" type of way. Bauer is pretty much always portrayed as a deeply conflicted guy. He does things that are against his personal ethics in the line of duty, and he does things at counter purposes to his duty because of his personal ethics. Truly jingoistic stuff, like, say, JAG, which they only watch in the Red States, prolly doesn't show torture because "let's pretend that doesn't happen". "Jingoism" to me implies a basic denial that your country does anything wrong... "24", at least when I left off with it, shows the government doing shit that is very wrong, and is pretty clear about it. Apologies to the fegs who like "JAG". I suppose that you don't really have to believe that every location you see represents the actual location where it was shot, but for Angelenos the teleportation on "24" is the ultimate extreme of the location- and travel-time futzing that has been with us since Hollywood became the place where they make the pictures. I expect reality from my entertainment like I expect nutrition from my Twinkies. Anyway: while on balance I'd say the politics of 24 is rather iffy, it's not as monolithic as it might seem. Like for example...(spoilerage ahead: search to "frunobulax" (twice...) to skip it) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . it's hardly "fascistic" to flout the law, government, and convention at every turn: the US government is not at all presented as any sort of shining exemplar. It's full of people, some good, some weak, some opportunistic, some brave, etc. The current plot, for example, finds a Republican president, who initially comes off as weak and indecisive, shown to be behind a terrorist plot, undertaken "to strengthen America" of course: Jack's against it (naturally). We know next to nothing about this (it was revealed at the end of the next-last episode, and only barely elaborated upon in this one), but it doesn't seem overly state-centric. While the most virtuous politician on the series so far has been a Democrat (and he wasn't perfect), and the most villainous a Republican, their administrations have presented a range of characters. (spoiler done) . . . . . . . . . .. . . frunobulax That said, it's hardly radical to propose "one good man against a corrupt and incompetent system," and in its tendency toward a sort of Wild West lawlessness and violence, it's hardly a politically progressive tendency either. But "fascistic" isn't the right word either: it's right up the typical middle of American moralistic violence. Oh, and I suppose I should say something about the show's use of torture, since everyone else has. It's pretty fucked up...but the situations that "justify" it are so preposterously and conveniently arranged that it's hard for anyone who thinks for half a second to take it seriously as any sort of justification for torture in the real world. Plus, several times it hasn't worked: people haven't said what they're supposed, have said what isn't true, or have managed to turn the torturers' weapons against them: if one worked hard enough (and completely against the grain of the show), you could use the show's use of torture to suggest why it *doesn't* work in reality (and shouldn't, even if it "worked"). Okay, so now that I've analyzed the Twinkies for nutrition, let's just say when it's working well, it's just a rather well-done thriller - park your brain at the door, though. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2006 17:25:49 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: reap On 4/11/06, FSThomas wrote: > Bachman, Michael wrote: > > I wonder what the body count is now of rap artists, producers, etc > > killed by guns? > > Probably about even with the number killed by idiots. There certainly is a red/blue divide in the country: it's more urban/rural & suburban or education-based* than state-based, but it's certainly real. You get MES as he is - I think the reason the band is still able to put out records varying in quality from pretty good (i.e., at least one great song even if the rest is shit) to fantastic is because he's such a stubborn cuss - and all of this making-things-difficult is, I think, one reason the music doesn't lapse utterly into rote cliche. Same with the revolving door marked "The Fall group band members." A very wise person once said (no idea who, though) something to the effect of "You either need only one Fall record, or you need every last one of them." I'm sure to the non-converted the difference between any given Fall record and any other given Fall record is negligible (or: "why the fuck would you want to listen to either of those?") but to those of us who are sickly addicted, well, what can I say. And yet (risking outcast) I still haven't bought the Peel box. Dunno - I always have to wait awhile to get used to dropping $60 on a single recording, even if it is a gigantic chunk. And there are a zillino live recordings of dubious quality/legitimacy which I also do not have.
