I only talked to him once, briefly, after a reading at Century House in Bath where I asked him to autograph my original copy of 'Gruts', and he autographed it very firmly with the current date, which I suspect was 1983. So no chance of pretending that I got it signed on publication! The first time I became aware of Ivor was on the Acker Bilk show on BBC Children's TV in - what? - 1961 or 1962? He was firmly "Ivor Cutler of Y'Hup" at that time, and there was one appearance where he performed "The Green Rain is Falling On Y'Hup" which has stuck in my memory ever since. Ba-ba-ba BA ba ba-ba, Ba-ba-ba BA ba ba-ba, etc. I discovered a reel-to-reel tape the other day of my school pals on 1st January 1965; mainly inane giggling, as usual. But there is one point on the tape where I start reciting "Spoon Control" before I get drowned out by more shouting and silliness. I lent my treasured LP of "Who Tore Your Trousers?" to a bloke once in about 1976 or 1977. I thought he should be reliable because he was a member of the Ecology Party (remember them?). It came back with a whacking great scratch right across one side... The point that I wanted to make was that I think that listening to Ivor Cutler's songs and stories - especially "How to make a friend"; "The Feather Field"; "Fish Fright" and "Spoon Control" were the best possible preparation for encountering the Magic Band a year or two later! - - Mike Godwin n.p. Somewhere there's a dimension filled with all of the "-tion"'s and "-sions" which have been sadly shorn away from their rightful parent-words over the last few years. So on Friday, he devotes the entire hour of Late Night with Conan O'Brien (NBC, 12:35 a.m. ET/PT) to his travelogue, which was filmed in February. It started when people from Finland kept popping up in his New York studio as part of the show's audience. He found out that not only is he very popular in Finland, but he's also a dead ringer for the country's first female president, Tarja Halonen. "She looks like me in a wig," he says. "People started howling about this." He then learned that she was running in a tight race for president and his comedy was influencing the election. She won narrowly, he says. So how does he feel about shaping the national debate? "It fed a sick part of me," he says. "When I find I've influenced an international election, my response is: But, of course. I can also move the sun across the sky. If it weren't for me, nighttime wouldn't come." So he figured he should visit. But he wasn't prepared for his Finnish fame. He says he was met by a crowd of thousands, including people dressed like him. Even on a trip to the Arctic Circle, he says, "their press followed me with a long lens." A visit to the Finnish Emmys, a reindeer farm and even an official meeting with Halonen were all "surreal," he says. "You felt like you were in some strange Fellini movie." To give viewers a sense of that, he decided to edit his 36 hours of footage into a one-hour show rather than airing bits nightly between a monologue and a chat with a celebrity. Reviewed Feb. 24, 2006. Band: Hitchcock, accompanied by the Minus 5: Scott McCaughey, Peter Buck, Bill Rieflin, John Ramberg. Guest: Grant Lee Phillips. By STEVEN MIRKIN A pairing that looked great on paper -- Robyn Hitchcock and Minus 5 front man Scott McCaughey share a similar Beatles-Byrds sensibility -- turned into a fitfully enjoyable evening that emphasized their differences. The Minus 5's set was something of a masterclass on pop songwriting. McCaughey turns out perfectly fashioned little tunes at an amazing rate; both onstage and on his band's new "The Gun Album" (Yep Roc), he's like an archivist distilling everything he knows about music into each three-minute song. McCaughey assembled a fine band to play them, including R.E.M.'s Peter Buck playing melodic bass lines and drummer Bill Rieflin riding the cymbals like Ringo, attacking the kit like Keith Moon or draping the song around his snare drum like Charlie Watts. There's no fat in a Minus 5 song: Each verse, chorus or bridge stays around only long enough to make its point before the next section comes in; the hook usually announces itself through a key change or turn in the beat. They're also marked by his goofy, self-deprecating humor. In "Out There on the Maroon," he brags, "I had five white Russians last night" before dropping the punchline "and two of them were people." Hitchcock is also known for his flights of often surreal humor, but his set was a restrained affair that took more than half its 90-minute length to build up a head of steam. Opening his set with a few solo numbers, he brought on Grant Lee Phillips for a lovely "Trams of Old London," followed by the first of two George Harrison covers (in honor of his birthday), a pensive "Long, Long, Long." But even when he was joined by most of the Minus 5 (with Buck switching to guitar and McCaughey taking over bass duties), Hitchcock insisted on calling a set heavy on mid-tempo folk rock that especially seemed to hem in Buck. Only toward the end of set proper, with "Somewhere Apart," did Hitchcock and Buck start to engage in some kind of guitar interplay. They continued during the encores with a lusty version of the Soft Boys' "I Wanna Destroy You" (dedicated to Bush and Cheney) and a cover of the Byrds' "Eight Miles High." Scruffy and delirious, it was the evening's most enjoyable music and a rare example of the two acts becoming more than the sum of their impressive parts. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2006 17:57:09 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: I bet this will be great On 3/10/06, Eb wrote: > O'Brien in Finland: It's double the fun > By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY > > Conan O'Brien says he couldn't have come up with a comedy bit as > popular and funny as his five-day foray to Finland. I was worried about this, but after obsessing over the album this past week I'm pretty pleased. The songs are a bit tighter overall and the sound has been cleaned up; dunno if that's natural growth or a conscious attempt to hit more of the mainstream. Josh's slow, thundering drums have gone more rolling-toms-by-way-of-Larry-Mullin-Jr, which does seem to take down the heaviness. Overall there isn't the connecting thread that NHIN had - it's almost like a modern John Hiatt album where all the songs are good but don't necessarily fit well together. That being said three of the eight songs are dead-nuts rockers, plus as a slow song "...Doldrums" is positively lethal. And it sounds really, really good when played really, really loud. I can't wait for the uncompressed version.
