Yup--Abe is alive. It's Vic Tayback who is dead. It's Vic Tayback who is dead. Sheldon Leonard and Martin Balsam, too. Someone invited me to see Hitchcock tonight, but I begged out of it. Wasn't in the mood for that ghastly drive to Capistrano. Sorry, Jason, but I think that's unduly harsh. Having only listened to it twice so far I haven't completely decided how much I like it myself, but no way do I consider it lame, or even disappointing. I hope folks on the fence don't dismiss it without taking a listen themselves. Someone else asked if any of the Yo La Tengo stuff made it -- a bunch of the songs they did with RD at the Jane St. theatre in 2000 are on it, but I don't think the band are on it at all (although they get a thanks in the credits); most of the basic tracks were recorded in 2002 and 2003, with more stuff recorded in 2004-2005, probably after his recovery from the shooting. Yesterday, out of the blue, I got big fat envelopes from two friends I've had for over thirty years containing Ray clippings. The Kinks digest is filled with accolades for the new disc and people are making plans to get together before and after Ray shows. And I? I bought the CD two days ago but I'm afraid to play it. I don't think I'm going to like it, and I'm not prepared not to like it, so I think it might collect dust for a while. I'm not a very good fan anymore, am I? As for Storyteller, it is somewhat lame compared to the live shows of 1995 through the first half of 1997, which were truly electrifying (although acoustic ;-) ). In the later shows, Ray seemed like he was going through the motions a bit. Someday I'm going to get me one of them there machines that converts analog tapes to digital whatevers so I can save all those great shows for eternity.
