I just got to a friend's house after seeing Robyn and the Minus 5 at the Belly-Up Tavern in Solano Beach, CA. Busy day today, but I squeezed everything in. I had my regular morning work schedule in Tempe, AZ, then went to lunch with my grandmother for her 91st birthday, before driving the 375 miles to Solano Beach (making a quick sidetrip in Algodones, Mexico for medication and tequila). I met up with Jason Thornton, had a few beers and enjoyed the show quite a bit. Here's the set list (after the Minus 5's set), if I can make out my notes here: Robyn solo: (Robyn in a red shirt covered with tan hands, playing a few acoustic songs, and addressing crowd, "Hello, groovers!") I'm Only You My Wife and My Dead Wife She Belongs to Me (Dylan) Queen Elvis (joined by Minus 5, and Robyn goes electric) If You Were a Priest (Robyn runs off to track down a Hail Mary pick), so the band start playing a filler song, doing "I Still Miss Someone" (Johnny Cash). Robyn joins the song partway through. Acid Bird Ole Tarantula Adventure Rocketship Birdshead Chinese Bones Creeped Out American Girl Somewhere Apart Rain (Beatles) Underground Sun encore: Cigarettes, Coffee, & Booze Bells of Rhymney Queen of Eyes After the sets, Robyn and Scott signed things at the merchandise booth, Bill broke down his drum kit, John hung around on the edge of the crowd, and Peter drifted in and out of the crowd. The band had mentioned, while on stage, that they were helping Robyn record a new album. Scott confirmed that 3 songs tonight were part of the new recording project--Ole Tarantula, Adventure Rocket Ship, and Undergroud Sun. I mentioned to Robyn that Joey Burns from Calexico is interested in working with him, and Robyn said that they were try to nail a bit of time down to approach doing something. On a personal note, this was a milestone for me tonight--it was the 50th time I've seen Robyn perform. A great night overall. Time for sleep, as I'm nodding off at the keyboard. Blagojevich says he didn't realize "The Daily Show" was a comedy spoof of the news when he sat down for an interview that ended up poking fun at the sometimes-puzzled governor. "It was going to be an interview on contraceptives ... that's all I knew about it," Blagojevich laughingly told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in a story for Thursday's editions. "I had no idea I was going to be asked if I was 'the gay governor.' " The interview focused on his executive order requiring pharmacies to fill prescriptions for emergency birth control. Interviewer Jason Jones pretended to stumble over Blagojevich's name before calling him "Governor Smith." He urged Blagojevich to explain the contraception issue by playing the role of "a hot 17-year-old" and later asked if he was "the gay governor." At one point in the interview, a startled Blagojevich looked to someone off camera and said, "Is he teasing me or is that legit?" The segment, which aired two weeks ago, also featured Illinois Republican Rep. Ron Stephens, a pharmacist who opposes the governor's order to pharmacies. Stephens has said he knew the show was a comedy. "I thought the governor was hip enough that he would have known that, too," Stephens said. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Feb 2006 09:49:07 -0500 From: The Great Quail Subject: Re: Cabbage-Patch doll parts Eddie sez: > shoot bayard in the goddam face as he emerges from the shitter, then tell > everybody you were aiming for "great quail". Hitchcock's latest domestic album, "Spooked," was released in 2004 via the Yep Roc label and features him partnering with the grass-roots duo of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. The Minus 5's latest, self-titled album (known as "The Gun Album" for its cover image) was released Feb. 6, also by Yep Roc, and features contributions from members of Wilco and the Decemberists as well as singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding. Previous efforts by the Minus 5 have featured contributions from members of Guided By Voices, Screaming Trees and the High Llamas. Peter Buck of R.E.M. (with whom McCaughey tours and records) is a core member of the Minus 5, and Ken Stringfellow (the Posies, Big Star) is a recurring guest. So it only makes sense that Hitchcock would team up with the Minus 5 for shows, including one Monday night at Slim's in San Francisco, and an eventual studio album. The Minus 5 will open the show with its own material and then return to back Hitchcock, who has previously performed as a member of the Soft Boys and backed by his band the Egyptians. "I've known him for a long time, actually," says McCaughey, when asked how he and Hitchcock connected. "And Peter Buck (a Minus 5 member), has known him for a long time, too. I've been a huge fan since the Soft Boys era), and the Young Fresh Fellows (another McCaughey band) opened for Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians in 1986 at the I-Beam in San Francisco and Berkeley Square, two great clubs that aren't with us anymore. Later, I opened for him solo, when he was doing solo shows." Playing with musicians he admired has been a pleasant pattern for McCaughey. He and R.E.M. guitarist Buck became friends after the latter relocated to Seattle in the mid-'90s and have since jammed, recorded and gigged frequently. "Peter and I like to do different things musically," he says. "Like in this show, he plays bass in the Minus 5. And then with Robyn, I'll play bass, and he'll play 12-string -- his good ol' Rickenbacker." Buck invited him to join R.E.M. in 1995 as a touring member to fill the utility player-type multi-instrumentalist role starting with its Monster tour. The two also have an instrumental alternative all-star group called Tuatara which, like the Minus 5, boasts an ever-changing lineup. As for their current musical activity, he says they've "done shows with Robyn in Europe, and it's cool for me to play all these great songs that I've loved for so long. We're doing a couple of Soft Boys tunes but not a ton, because he just did sort of Soft Boys reunion tours a couple of years ago. So he did a lot of that. "But we're doing some Egyptians stuff that he hasn't played for a while," he continues. "And we're doing some stuff off his last three or four records that he's never gotten to play much with a band." The best thing on it's "Thanksgiving Day," in my opinion, and that's not even close to as good as "Animal" from "To the Bone" back in 1996 or whenever it was. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Feb 2006 15:20:09 -0800 (PST) From: Benjamin Lukoff Subject: Re: Is this appropriate? But the Brit is a bit more scientific. Theyre probably a pretty similar kind of brainwave frequency, he says. I havent dissected any of them. But theyre generally liberal, humane people with a sense of humor. One obvious difference, at least for American fans who live in San Diego, is that they might not be able to recognize him. Not that hes had cheekbone implants or anything like that; its just that he hasnt played in the city for more than nine years. Best known for his output with Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians in the 80s, Hitchcocks music has always been a collision of melody, poetry, intelligence and humor. Some of his best output can be traced back to his original group, The Soft Boys, whose 1980 album, Underwater Moonlight, has become something of a pop-punk touchstone. Released around the time punk was morphing into new wave, the album fused punk attitude (I Wanna Destroy You), impressive musicianship (Kingdom of Love) and top-notch pop tunes (Queen of Eyes). Although The Soft Boys briefly reformed to record Nextdoorland in 2002, both of Hitchcocks proper rock bands have ceased performing as units. Hes kept himself busy, though, with a stream of solo albums. Many of his best, like 1990s Eye, capture him in the studio alone with an acoustic guitar and little else. His last solo release, 2004s Spooked, was a haunting bit of bluegrass thanks to the instrumental backing of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. I dont have a regular band anymore, he says. I just sort of borrow people and put them back afterwards. At the end of his current West Coast run, he and tour mates The Minus 5 will record together in a Seattle studio. Hitchcock explains that it will be a Hitchcock record, but theyll be the band on it. I have started playing on some of [the songs by Scott McCaughey, vocalist-songwriter for The Minus 5], so the lines between me and The Minus 5 are starting to blur. Its not a new collaboration. Hitchcock, McCaughey and The Minus 5 and R.E.M. member Peter Buck have been playing together for years. If Im in Seattle, they play with me, or if theyre over in London, we play in the pub late at night, Hitchcock explains. They were on an album of mine in the late-90s called Jewels for Sophia. This is just a visible manifestation of something thats been around for quite some time. The show at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach will further blur the lines between the two. The Minus 5 will open the show, followed by Hitchcock performing by himself, and then The Minus 5 will return to the stage as his backing band. Hitchcock has also learned to play Cigs Coffee Booze, Aw, Shit Man and My Life As A Creep from The Minus 5s latest, self-titled album. Live, Hitchcock says hell perform a mixed batch of material from his solo career, a couple of Soft Boys tunes and a cover or two (he hinted at The Beatles and The Byrds). Mostly, though, hell just be trying to avoid the cheese. Ooooooohhh, the well-documented cheese fanatic says when informed that theres a shop downtown that sells nothing but. I dont really do cheese very much anymore. My wife and I are both kind of powerless before cheese. We have been succumbing to cheese because it has been on the rider while weve been on tour, but we try not to keep any in the house. I probably shouldnt be popping cheese down in San Diego. Robyn Hitchcock and Minus 5 play with Plump at the Belly Up, 8 p.m. on Feb. 23. $17-$19. 858-481-8140. 2/22/06 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Feb 2006 15:33:39 -0800 From: "Spotted Eagle Ray" Subject: Re: ray davies On 2/24/06, Benjamin Lukoff wrote: > > > > I've been on a real Kinks kick lately... > > whatcha been listening to?
