There is nothing creepy about being proud of getting good hate mail. Anyone who runs a Web site of any substance always relishes a good crank letter! In fact, I have one here, let me get it... * * * * * * Dear Modren Werd, Your writers suck! You need to create a web sight all bout the best writer ever, JOE ESTERHAUS. You suck! Now die. Most of y'all can delete now, but for anyone who wondered about my Katrina experience, here's a really quick summary: I left the day before the storm hit, with my wife and our boys, Colin 7 and Julian 1.5. We spent 3 nights in Houston watching the same stuff you were watching on TV. Once we realized we couldn't go home, we drove to my mom's place in Alexandria, VA. We spent a couple of weeks there, then headed back south to my wife's family in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It was 38 days after Katrina that we were finally permitted to return to our house to see how it had fared. We found out that we had been freakishly lucky. All of the houses on our block were raised high enough that the flood waters reached almost, but not quite, to the floor. The blocks above and below us didn't fare nearly as well, and to this day our block remains an oasis in the center of miles of devastation. Hardly something to celebrate, but the attitude among our neighbors is that we are the core that is encouraging our less fortunate neighbors to return. That's exactly as weird as it sounds. Lucky as we were, we still had a lot of work to do before we could move back. We moved back into our house on Christmas Eve, and every subsequent week has brought us closer to normalcy. 2 weeks ago we finally got cable, which was important because we still didn't have any other way to get Internet at home. Two days ago we got our first home-delivered mail since the storm. And today we finally got home telephone service, from our cable provider (Bellsouth still can't even give us an ETA). So it's been this push and pull between weird and normal, and there's really no end to that. In case anyone has made it this far I want to say that New Orleans is not okay. No matter what you see during Mardi Gras, just remember that beyond the parade routes is a kind of third-world despair that we're not used to seeing in the US. I think it's important for people to know that the problems in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are not on the road to a quick and easy solution, despite the fact that the media appear to have moved on. +brian (glad to see the Broome Brothers back at it) in New Orleans ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V15 #38 *******************************
