He was 77. Cover died of pneumonia Sunday at the Lillian Booth Actor's Fund of America home in Englewood, N.J., said publicist Dale Olson. He had been living at the home since December 2005 while recuperating from a heart condition. In his nearly six decades in show business, Cover made numerous appearances on television shows, including "The Jackie Gleason Show," "All in the Family," "Who's the Boss?" "Will & Grace," "Living Single," "Mad About You" and "ER." He began his career on the stage, appearing in Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and "Henry IV," and later in numerous Broadway productions, including "Any Wednesday," "Wild Honey and "Born Yesterday." But Cover was best known for his role as Tom Willis, who was in an interracial marriage with a black woman, in "The Jeffersons." He and his wife lived in the same "deluxe apartment" building that Sherman Hemsley moved his family to after making money in the dry-cleaning business. There, Cover often played a comic foil to Hemsley's blustering, opinionated black businessman. The show ran from 1975 to 1985. Cover also appeared in several films, including "The Great Gatsby," "The Stepford Wives" and "Wall Street." He is survived by his widow, Mary, a son and a daughter. - -ferris. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2006 12:35:25 -0800 (PST) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: impending apocalypse? Linda Perry makes Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston look positively restrained. I actually think the thing that pushes it beyond merely too awful for words to unbearably shitty though is, oddly enough, the title. It's like they didn't want to just call it "What's Going On?" -- the obvious title for the song -- but were too lazy to really give it a clever or interesting sideways title. If they'd just called it the obvious title or had given it a properly Joy Division-esque title like "Terra Firma" (not that Linda Perry'd know Joy Division wasn't just a girl singer) it'd seem a bit less affected and I could at least buy it as sincere; a piece of shit, but one that could at least be heartfelt. But by flippantly calling it "What's Up?" it doesn't even have any plausible sincerity to make it forgivable. Shit, a completely wacky title like "Yodelling Goats Playing Poker" would at least show a sense of humor. It's really no surprise that Linda Perry ended up writing for the likes of Xtina, is it? I guess what is kind of surprising is that she became such a writer/producer-type at all when, as we've noted, she seemed pretty excited about her own capabilities as a vocalist. - -Rx ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2006 23:26:45 +0100 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Re: DVD of The moment - -- Hurricane Jesus is rumored to have mumbled on 10. Well, producing other people helped Babyface get his own record contract, so maybe she thinks she can follow in his footsteps -- after all, he never even had a really rad hat like hers. Yes, I was wicked and downloaded it before Christmas, but I went out and bought it (with DVD) on its release date, and I'm besotted once more. This is all Chris Hintz's fault. I'm still waiting for the limited edition to be released here. It's supposed to come out Monday. But I also downloaded it early and have listened to it quite often, although maybe not quite as often as I initially did to Dear Catastrophe Waitress. Which doesn't necessarily mean that that was the better CD. The new one seems to have even more tracks that sound *exactly* like some other band. To me "To Be Myself Completely" is pure Buffalo Springfield. "The Blues Are Still Blue", which is my favorite so far, sounds like T. Rex. - -- Sebastian Hagedorn Ehrenfeldg|rtel 156, 50823 Kvln, Germany http://www.spinfo.uni-koeln.de/~hgd/ "Being just contaminates the void" - Robyn Hitchcock ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Feb 2006 12:55:23 -0500 From: "Maximilian Lang" Subject: RE: frummer (frommer) >From: Jill Brand >Subject: frummer (frommer) >Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2006 20:31:13 -0500 (EST) >Is anyone else figuratively wearing out the grooves on The Life Pursuit? >Yes, I was wicked and downloaded it before Christmas, but I went out and >bought it (with DVD) on its release date, and I'm besotted once more. This >is all Chris Hintz's fault. I got the same version as Jill has. I have yet to watch the DVD but I really like the cd. Leaner and meaner sounding without the overly glossy production od Waitress. All that and a tour with the New Pornographers!!! Saw Mission Of Burma last night at the Bowery Ballroom. Not sure I am too thrilled with their new material. It could have something to do with the newness of it or their uneven (but intense) live playing or maybe it's just not all that great. I managed to join their singles subscription club prior to it's selling out, so I guess I'll find out soon enough how the stuff sounds on disc. For the most part it was a lot more mellow than their older material.
