It's almost as if they decided that the problem with _Pop_ was that it was experimental, rather than that they forgot to write enough decent songs to accompany the sonic experiments. "Vertigo" is a great song but the rest of it, well at least it's not Coldplay. But at least they aren't _Reveal_ or _Around the Sun._ "A severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer." -- Mitch Hedberg . Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hmm. I heard a lot more "pop" radio last year than... well... ever before, really (owing to changing offices, see "reggaeton") and while I got really sick of that one Kelly Clarkson song, I think that had more to do with repetition than actual badness. I assume that because the repetition thing applies to everything played on such radio and there were certainly songs whose badness was more striking on, say, the second listening than that one. I saw a fragment of the video and thought it was kinda funny that such an effort was expended to make it look so "rock". Seemed neither especially convincing nor necessary but apparently did the trick marketing-wise. What was more striking about this whole pop radio experiment was how songs like "Sex and Candy" by Marcy Playground, about which I had not thought since 1993 or so, live on as semi-classics among people who now like Kelly Clarkson. - -Rx ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2006 11:08:25 +1300 From: James Dignan Subject: Re: fegmaniax-digest V15 #34 >BTW: did all fegs relocate to Montana and move into isolated shacks? >It's been awfully quiet here... still the same isolated as ever... but it's either (a) mid Summer or (b) mid Winter where everyone is - not the most cnducive times for writing email. Yeah, there's also the weird karaoke scene. There are totally crap songs that live on as "classics" in that world. The unbearably shitty "What's Up?" by 4 Non-Blondes comes to mind. The only time that I definitely saw Elton Dean was with the Centipede outfit, though I expect that he was in the Westbrook band and other places which I went to as well. And I only went to Centipede because of the Blossom Toes link, as it featured several Toes alumni (Godding, Belshaw, Palmer, Westlake possibly?). As I noted previously, Kevin Westlake died in September 2004, so the Centipede now has two wooden legs (bad taste, Godders old boy). Went to Mike Leigh's awesome "Two thousand years" at the Theatre Royal last night and had a brief chat to the maestro after the show - about 3 generations of Jewish families in North London and their relationships with secularism, Zionism, the kibbutz movement and of course Judaism. Totally fascinating to a 'secular' person like myself whose step-daughter has recently converted to Judaism and whose knowledge of Yiddish is confined to what I have picked up from films by Mel Brooks and Woody Allen. Does anybody know what a 'frummer' is? I didn't. Brilliant ending joke about Noah's ark and fish. The show goes on to Manchester next week, so doubtless Howard Jacobson will have one of his diatribes about it in the next week or two. But will he like it or loathe it? Mike Leigh was interested to hear about how my dad and his brother were associated with the Unity Theatre, and I am going to write to him telling him all the reminiscences I can recall. Meanwhile, my uncle's imdb entry is as follows: . He's still writing songs and musicals at the age of 88! - - Mike "who is this god person, anyway?" Mentioning that song in the context of classics is sort of like escorting a vomiting goat into a five-star restaurant during peak hours. I used to annoy people by out-over-the-topping Linda Perry's gigantic-jazz-hands vocal on that track. Funny, whenever that song is mentioned I think of Robyn. It was one of those times when he was hosting "120 Minutes" and he introduced that video by saying something like "Here's 4 Non Blondes asking the age old question, What's Going On?" I just remember thinking "there's no way in hell Robyn could even like this song..."
