Remember when the Minus 5 seemed like a spinoff of the Young Fresh Fellows...rather than the other way around? I'm pleasantly surprised at what a dependable presence the M5 have become. Actually, I'm not sure that I knew the M5 had launched an official site until now. Though the Universal Trendsetter fansite is still superior. Didn't he host MTV's 120 Minutes for a year or two (speaking of dumber than a bag of hammers)? Also, I've been filing my collection of wood shavings lately, and I'm not certain if I should go for the Lurgison-Bentley asymmetrical case, which requires ordering the shavings by volume, or the rather more old-fashioned "Pittsburg" layout, which correlates the filing order to angle of curvature. As it is, shavings of each variety of wood are currently stored in the appropriate metal canisters, per 1932's ninth revision of temporary storage requirements for the International Wood-Shaving and Metal-Filing Fanciers' Association. (Note that once I get a spruce shaving with the rare, and rather misnomered, "Nebraska angle," I'll be able to complete the renowned Mendoza Quintet without the later - and quite specious - substitution paradigms. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jan 2006 20:11:57 -0800 From: "Marc Alberts" Subject: RE: RH dates with the Minus 5 Roberta wrote: > http://www.minus5.com/tourdates.htm > 03/04/2006 Crocodile Cafe > w/ Robyn Hitchcock Seattle, WA I haven't been able to get to a show in a few years--any of the Seattle Fegs planning on a group thing? I asked Scott McCauaghey about that at a show last month and he said that he loved the Fellows but that the drummer Tad just wasn't all that into it anymore and that it was like pulling teeth to get him to do anything and that Tad could never be replaced. Tad is apparently more into his work with Chris Ballew http://chrisandtad.com/ And Kurt Bloch and Jim Sangster's new band Sgt. Major is fab. Los Angeles, CA I doubt there is going to be any Largo action this time, unless Robyn heads there right after the Key Club--the Largo is closed on Sundays. Any word about in-stores? Nothing posted on the Amoeba site yet. I had been hoping for a Tucson show, but it doesn't seem to be happening this time around. The local musicians and their friends seem to really be into Robyn. Joey Burns, from Calexico, has been showing interest in playing with Robyn--he's mentioned it a couple of times when I've run into him (I tend to wear Hitchcock shirts frequently). Robyn performed with Howe Gelb for an exhibition of Michele's art at Hotel Congress. Neko Case was there in the crowd, last time at Hotel Congress. See you there (maybe), Marc I wish everybody would have to have an electric thing implanted in our heads that gave us a shock whenever we did something to disobey the president. A Message from Scott McCaughey: Hey there, dear jurors, this is your pal and plaintiff Scott McCaughey speaking at you from The Big Smoke, London, England. The poor little whale didn't make it, but we carry on with sadness in our hearts. Speaking of sadness, there's a new Minus 5 album coming out any day!!! Well, February 7th, in fact, though technically I believe you can order it now, as people have been walking up to me with copies to sign as I play the bass with Robyn Hitchcock around the UK. An Italian interviewer said that on the record the characters in the songs seem to be 'flirting with disaster'... I said, 'Flirting? They're already married!' Feel free to court lovely disaster yourselves by acquainting yourself with a lovely album by me and my incredibly talented friends. You know who they are, and they know who you are! Thanks for listening, and have a lovely day, Sir Scott, MBE Pre-order now from www.yeproc.com to get two exclusive bonus tracks free with your order! Pre-order "The Gun Album" directly from Yep Roc Records to reserve your copy and you'll get a special bonus: a handmade CD-R with two exclusive Minus 5 tracks - an alternate take of "Cigarettes, Coffee and Booze" from the album, and a bonus track called "I'm Not There." These songs are not available from any other source, and are yours free for pre-ordering from Yep Roc. Just click here! {Listen to "Twilight Distillery" from "The Gun Album"} {Click here to launch a media player loaded with "Twilight Distillery," the first single from "The Gun Album."} This is the new Minus 5 album. Against all odds, it is perhaps the seventh full-lengther in a career marked primarily by catastrophe, shame and fisticuffs. (Leave triumphs to those that beseech them.) This record could not have happened without the superhuman efforts of Scott McCaughey. Even though Mr. McCaughey had the assistance of the usual horde of ragtag bandoleros, it was Scott who hung the notes on the staff, gathered the orchestra (paying triple union scale, out of pocket), set up a microphone, manufactured the recording tape, invented electricity, and provided each participant with a sponge and a marmot. Therefore, regarding this project, it is at Scott McCaughey only that any projectiles or pearls must be hurled. http://www.yeproc.com/store.php?page=viewItem&itemNum=CD-YEP-2065 Later, Marc btw--I finally figured out, with the help of Google, what they meant by putting your money into a "fruit machine". I'd heard about these fruit machines for years, mentioned by Monty Python, the Jam (Pretty Green), etc., and never realized until this morning they were talking about playing the slots. (I hope "playing the slots" isn't a rude euphemism in the UK) I would like to apologize to purchasers of the executive version of this mailing list for the peremptory nature of that announcement. The brusque tone was intended for buyers of the cheaper version. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V15 #21 *******************************
