Luckily no-one else knows what we are arguing >about... you're wrong there... Ronnie worked best when he had either a good foil (Beckinsale, Jason, Corbett) or was in monologue direct to camera. Rossiter could hold his own very well without or as the stand-out in a surrounding support cast (as with Reggie Perrin). Beckinsale was excellent, mind you, as series like "The Lovers" proved. Wishing you all the best for the season and the new year! Hope you have a good one! It's been quite a busy year one way and another. I'm still writing art reviews for the ODT (local newspaper), and I made the news myself in September. At the beginning of the month I became the first announcer on Otago University's student radio station (or, indeed on any New Zealand student station) to complete 20 years on air. This led to a bit of publicity, including a couple of articles in the ODT. In one of those I had to list my 20 favourite albums of all time - a much harder task than I would have thought, but also one of those "DJ's fantasy" things that you always hope someone will ask! My art continues to go from strength to strength, with the number of sales creeping up, and a bit of recognition in other ways. In August I was one of the guest artists at an exhibition at the Grainstore Gallery in Oamaru, 80 miles north of Dunedin, with several paintings on display. The following month a painting of mine was placed third in one of the Otago Art Society's annual exhibitions. I also managed to get work exhibited in several other exhibitions around Dunedin, including both the Mainland and Cleveland award competitions. As the new year starts, I've got a couple of major projects on the go. The first of these is my third solo exhibition, which will be at the Moray Gallery in mid-to-late March. Anyone who's in Dunedin at that time is more than welcome to come along to the opening! The other project is still very tentative, but - if I can get it going - will be more than a little daunting. I'm thinking about writing a book on the Dunedin art scene. A book profiling the work of a couple of dozen local artists would fill a big gap, but the whole process of getting a book to the bookshelves is a bit frightening, so it may remain a pipe dream. Music has again taken a back seat this year, though i have started mucking around with the guitar again. If only I could get recording software to work properly on my computer... My new "toy" this year has been a digital camera. t gets a LOT of use. I'm no longer weighing up whether I can afford to fire off several shots, and many of the photos I've taken that i wouldn't have otherwise will be perfect for paintings. I got it in August, and amazingly have since taken 1500 photos! So it's basically already paid for itself. The family is all fine. Mum is still very active and in good health, which is good. She's also still writing - she has a novel being considered at the moment by an agency in - of all places - Sweden. Fingers crossed that something comes of it. Alice is also fine, and getting a little more serious about her art - she keeps talking about possibly renting a studio. She's actually been negotiating with her landlord over a shed/sleep-out he has on the property, with the hope of turning that into a proper space for her to work (Alice flats in north Dunedin - her flatmate is also her landlord). The biggest change to the family, though, was the arrival in January of two small bundles of fluff - tiny kittens which we named Nut and Bolt. Those tiny kittens are now enormous, especially Nut, who weighs in at six kilos. These two boys get on very well together, and are completely different in personality from each other. They both live up to their names. Nut is completely crazy, happy, bouncy and affectionate. Normal cat behaviour is a when he rubs himself around your legs. Abnormal cat behaviour is when this happens while you're having a shower! He's also gadget mad, and loves watching the computer screen, the drawer of the CD player, and the numbers on the VCR display going round. Bolt is more retiring, and bolts from visitors. He's more "catlike" - the silent assassin - but when he's in an affectionate mood he's very friendly. We're all planning to spend a fairly quiet Christmas in Dunedin, with possibly a couple of days off early in the new year to visit Alice's parents in Ranfurly and to explore the possibility of getting art into galleries in Wanaka. Other than that though, we'll probably be at home, so if you're in the neighbourhood... I hope that all is well with you and yours as you celebrate whatever it is you celebrate at this time of year. love, James - -- James Dignan, Dunedin, New Zealand -.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.- =-.-=-.-=-.- You talk to me as if from a distance .-=-.-=-.-=-. -=-.
