Those belts are often tiny little rubber bands which ionize (oxidize? O forget) out of existence in no time at all. Most vexing. Also on the "fegs and their relationships with home entertainment electronic devices" front, here's something. After spending the last year without a TV and actually being pretty much fine with that, I was starting to think that I wouldn't mind seeing a DVD from time to time. So naturally, at my office party on Friday, I won the door prize drawing and now own a brand new combo TV-DVD player. It's kinda cool... it felt as if I passed some kind of zen right of passage, "only when you have truly let go of your perceived need for something will it come to you", or something like that. Still not gonna get cable. If it hadn't had a DVD player built into it, I woulda sold it for cash. Oddly that was the second "grand prize drawing" I won this year. The first was at a stable back in WV in August. I won a t-shirt, some Mary Kay cosmetics, and free riding lessons, which I have yet to cash in. - -Rx ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Dec 2005 16:08:42 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: final word On 12/19/05, Spotted Eagle Ray wrote: > Oddly that was the second "grand prize drawing" I won this year. Well, first make sure the "riding lessons" aren't at that one farm in Washington state - you might have won more than you bargained for. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Dec 2005 14:47:32 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Re: final word Spotted Eagle Ray wrote: > Those belts are often tiny little rubber bands which ionize > (oxidize? They're not that tiny, though -- probably about 3/8" wide. There's a tinier one on each side too, but I don't think that belt is the problem. Those aren't the ones that gave out on my last cassette deck... they were really small and skinny, li'l' round things that might be lucky to circimscribe a dime. Admittedly my knowledge here is worse than spotty, and that deck was way older than Eb's, so I'l shut up. - -Rx ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2005 13:24:45 +1300 From: James Dignan Subject: Bad santa; no biscuit >"Santas go on rampage in New Zealand" > >http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10511277/ I was going to say "but...that was *last* year!", but it seems to have happened again. Foxy Lady [Jimi Hendrix] >From an June 21, 1989 interview with Robyn Hitchcock by Robert Loerzel (http://www.robertloerzel.com/Clips/hitchcock.htm): I read that you occasionally played with Peter Buck and Peter Holsapple and you were calling yourselves Nigel and the Crosses? RH: That's right, yeah. We did a Nigel and the Crosses gig. The first one was actually at the Cubby Bear in Chicago. It was a sort of accident. Holsapple was doing a benefit, and we all got up and played with him. We were basically covering ourselves and covering other people, doing old Soft Boys songs... basically just pop rock. Are you planning on playing together again? RH: We did one in London last month, which was quite fun. But it's a matter of getting everybody in the same place. I'd like to do one at Christmas, but it gets expensive. I can't imagine doing a Nigel tour. I read that you thought of it as an equivalent of the Traveling Wilburys? RH: (Laughs.) Well, actually the guy put that into my mouth. He said, "You mean, is it like the Wilburys?" And I said, "Sort of." The Wilburys was a way of relaunching their respective careers, you know, which was a brilliant marketing move. With the exception of Tom Petty, the rest of them hadn't been doing that well recently. I don't know really know whether -- it's different for us. We have guest Wilburys. We have Billy Bragg as a guest -- Not Wilburys, Nigels, sorry. Billy Bragg was with us, and Glenn Tilbrook from Squeeze. So they're kind of honorary Nigels. It's a floating outfit. One night in *November*! Oh, crap. I don't have a DIME account. Who has this show? The Curse Of The Higsons probably gets more play in my house than any other single record. For some strange reason, it's the only record of mine (other than newish faddy stuff like New Pornographers and Arcade Fire and Tracy + The Plastics -- they don't cotton to The Decemberists for some reason) that my roommates put in regularly of their own volition. (They played the hell out of Black Foliage right after moving into the house, though.) Anyway, I'd love to hear this recording. Whoopdi-friggin'-do.
